SATA or PCIE m.2 Samsung SSD?

Hi. I have a Dell Laptop and I want to upgrade my SSD. Currently, it only has 128GB SSD which is basically nothing. My m.2 slot support SATA and PCIE SSDs. I've been looking at the Samsung 970 Series and the Samsung 860 Series. I would like a 500GB SSD as I think that should be more than enough. On my laptop, I do a lot of programming, light productivity use, light photo and video editing, and a lot of multitasking. First off, should I get the Samsung 970 Series or the 860 Series? And then, which specific SSD from that series should I get (Evo, Evo Plus, etc.)? Thanks in advanced.

Maybe not Samsung in the first place? The 970 series (PCIe 3.0 x4) cost as much as PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 SSDs for example, while the 860 Evo (SATA) cost as much as many PCIe 3.0 x4 SSDs

you only benefit from nvme if you transfer large files alot

adata sx8200 pro & crucial mx500 are great alternatives, also BX500 (non dram )for storage

Why is the crucial p1 cheaper than the crucial mx500. I'm actually considering it because of its lower price. Would they make a difference compared to the Samsung ones?

They're worth it. The controllers are excellent. That's why the 860 Evo will outperform many PCIe drives in real world performance.

That's a QLC NVMe drive, compared to the TLC NAND used in the Samsung Evo and Crucial MX500 drives it performs much worse when both runs out of SLC cache (but faster before that). Btw you'll feel the effects of running out of SLC cache when the drive is nearly full (say 80-90%) and sustained read/write operation. Only choose it over the TLC SATA models if capacity is twice as much.

I beg to differ, at least not with PCIe drives that carry 1GB of DRAM per 1TB of NAND capacity.

I think you misread "many" as "any". I wasn't saying they outperform every PCIe drive, just lots of them. There are some seriously crappy PCIe drives out there. Of course there are plenty of crappy SATA ones too, but the 860 Evo isn't one of them. You're not just paying for the Samsung logo.

Those are not in my point of consideration in the first place, nor were they mentioned here. The better than Samsung ones are already plenty enough to make recommendations to skip Samsung
