We are aware of this problem and are actively working to eliminate it as best we can.

Do not make any more threads about this issue.  This is now the main topic and additional threads will just be merged into this one if found.

 

If you receive one of these PMs,

  • Do not click any links
  • Do not reply
  • Report it using the links/buttons available so we are made aware (example below)
  • Delete it

If you see one of these profiles:

  • Do not post on their page
  • Report any spam status updates on the page
  • If the account is more than 24 hours old and there is no spam on the page, it is almost certainly banned, even if you cannot see it.  Again, refer to recommendation 1 above

If you received a notification for a PM, but the PM does not exist, it was almost certainly due to one of these and can be safely ignored.

If you received what appeared to be spam email from LTT, please understand that we do not send spam, but if you have elected to receive email notifications of PMs, you will receive an email about PMs, including this PM which is spam.

It would be an extra line of defence to help those who didn't think enough to not click the links I suppose, but that's about it.

Mini DSP SHD Studio -> 2x Mola Mola Tambaqui DAC's (fed by AES/EBU, one feeds the left sub and main, the other feeds the right side) -> 2x Neumann KH420 + 2x Neumann KH870

 

(Having a totally seperate DAC for each channel is game changing for sound quality)

I just got an email from "do.not.reply@linustechtips.com" that I'm 99% sure is spam. Just thought I'd put this out there because it looked pretty normal and I was about to click it until I scrolled down and noticed that ad at the bottom.

That was taken care of yesterday, it's just a bot user that sent like, a few hundred thousand pms lol
Whenever you get a pm it sends an email, you can disable that in settings -> notifications

TL;DR: some person (spam bot) sent many people a PM on this forum with spam, some users have their settings set up so you get an email for every PM you received. That is how this got into your email box.

The restrictions to how many can be added at once is already in place. Though like said, functionality prevents having any post-count based restriction. This issue is same across whole forums.

This is something I'm against. There are very legit reasons for new users to post links and pictures in their PMs. For example if they need to contact LMG staff.

This is double edged sword. The fact is that majority of the users don't bother looking around in account settings. Disabling by default might be counter effective if user makes account in order to participate in giveaway, or otherwise contact LMG staff and doesn't check forums daily.

 

The better solution from forum side is to limit information sent to email in notifications. Currently it sends about everything. The new, which sends participants and title only, is already being worked on.

There were watch on new accounts once attack started and was noted by moderators. However, we are talking about maybe hundreds of new accounts within 24h. So watching, checking and banning was done during attack. But there isn't automated way to flag accounts made like this (false positives when users create account from linked services). And it's time consuming to constantly watch and check the list manually.

 

Additionally, as outlined earlier in this thread, once PM is sent, deleting spammer won't delete PM from recipients. So this type of attack is still possible, even after immediate measures were taken to lessen the effects. Most of the common spam is by accounts created by humans. That includes the spam that escapes filters.

In addition to efforts to block the spammers from connecting to the forum in the first place, we are also revising the email template so users will be notified there is a PM, but not shown the content.  This will eliminate this issue going forward, and as a side effect, increase security.

They use captcha farms, very low paid people, whose only job is to solve captchas 24/7, so they have gotten really good at it, because they get paid per captcha solved.

Seriously though, it would make your job as a moderator easier and it would make the experience nicer for the genuine standard forum members. 

It's hard to stop a bot when it's a 14 year old being paid to do it in russia or india. There's forums were you get paid after you spread some message to any a certain threshold of people or a certain amount of traffic. Can't really stop that as it's not a bot
