But, yeah. My point is, hatejerking aside, the industry's been more and more blatant that the only thing they want is money, and they love the fact that Fortnite is so huge. I don't think this will make it very far in the court because of that, there's too much money involved. Epic's absolutely gonna pour everything they have into their legal defense fund for this.

My reasoning is that this is the kind of bad capitalism that makes socialism/communism look appealing.

tbh this is the endgame of capitalism, encouraging this kind of shit. I'm not saying "everything should be free, companies are just greedy" because that's fucking ridiculous, but something shouldn't be intentionally designed to be visually enticing and addicting and encourage spending all your money on something for the off-chance that you might get the thing you want because "it's only $5 bro". That "$5" is gonna add up fast.

 

Or so addicting that it takes away from your social life, which seems to be the focus of the lawsuit. Socializing with other people is healthy, not doing so isn't. You may argue that a multiplayer game like Fortnite is social, but you're only interacting with other people for one round out of... hundreds. After that one round you're probably not gonna see them again.

I can think of only one reason: those who are sueing Fortnite wants a piece of the pie of their success. Or simply said: they want to suck the cash out of Fortnite.

I mean, WTF has addiction to do it with it like as addictive as cocaine?? With cocaine you can kill yourself, Fortnite doesn't but then again, can't those fucking parents not take responsibility on their kids??

Let's be real here, if their entire case is that they made a game that was designed to release dopamine then they are kinda grabbing at straws here. The entire point of the game is to be fun and engaging so it gies without saying that it will release dopamine just like countless other games.

That's an unfair comparison. One is a horrible addiction that cripples friendships, destroys families, empties trust funds and savings, and causes all hygiene + common sense to go out the window, and the other is drugs.

Seriously speaking, I have nothing personal against QC and in fact welcome the French speaking students who vacation + work in places like Tofino, BC for 8 months of the year, but at the same time can't understand some of the logic or laws that come out of that province. There's obviously a reason for laws that make even free contests illegal, among other oddities, but to outsiders (myself included) a lot of things make it seem like the "no fun" province.  Maybe I just need to visit sometime and try to fit in with the culture so I can better understand. IDK.

Selling cocaine isn't a crime because cocaine is addictive; it is a crime because there is a law stating that it is illegal to sell cocaine.

If you want to stop all addictive things, you need to push for a law banning them on the premise of them being addictive, and see if it get passed. Then you can sue people. You can expect people to get convicted for breaking laws that don't exist on the basis of proving not that they committed a crime, but that some argument you would use to support such would-be-law holds...

I don't know how they are going to present the argument, but I did not read anything about fun being an intrinsic part.    My gut feeling is that to be successful they are going to have to prove the game was intentionally coded to exploit human behaviors (much like a criminal would in committing fraud) resulting in the addiction.
