Tyler "Ninja" Blevins is the most recognizable professional gamer in the world, and on August 1, he announced that he would be leaving his 14 million Twitch followers behind for an exclusive streaming deal with Microsoft's Mixer.

The move was seen as a major gamble, since Twitch is by far the most dominant platform for video game streaming, and Mixer has struggled to find a foothold in the industry since its launch in 2016. After a well-publicized debut, Ninja has managed to earn more than 2.3 million followers on Mixer, making him the platform's most popular content creator by far.

Since Ninja arrived, Mixer has also seen a large influx of new streamers giving the platform a chance. According to data from Newzoo, total hours of gaming content streamed on Mixer increased to 32.6 million during the last three months, a 188% increase from the three months prior.

However, the excitement among streamers hasn't translated into more viewers. Mixer saw a 10.6% decrease in total hours watched during the last three months, according to Newzoo. Data from StreamElements shows that Mixer had less hours watched in September (29.6 million), a month after Ninja arrived, than it did in July (37.7 million), the month before his exclusive deal began.

This likely means that Ninja will struggle to reach the same sort of viewership he saw on Twitch in the near future, but the exclusive deal with Microsoft has other benefits. Ninja's manager and wife Jessica Blevins told Business Insider that he chose to leave Twitch so he could expand his brand beyond streaming. Since joining Mixer, Ninja has released a book, announced an apparel deal with Mixer, and appeared on an episode of Fox's "The Masked Singer."

I'm surprised at how much twitch dominates the streaming market. And this stat makes an earlier article I read about ESL csgo pro league and ESL one dota 2 exclusivity deal with facebook insanely dumb though now they apparently will end it after December which isn't surprising as a tournament organizer to attract advertisers you need to show that you have the viewers. Also a streamer I watched recently said that facebook approached him and offered him more money than he was currently getting on twitch to stream for facebook exclusively but he turned it down because he thinks he can grow more on twitch.

This is to be expected honestly. I remember how annoying it was to deal with the old problems twitch used to have, imagine people with the mindset of having to wait for years for the site to be any good?

More a function of just how big YT is, in some ways, but I also think a lot of YT is traffic is bots in general. But the metric may bring non-gaming streaming part of YT into the mix for analytics and that messes things up. What I find more strange is the Facebook numbers.

 

A note on the Mixer watch hours numbers: Mixer had full (and really good) coverage of E3. That changes the dynamics as Mixer isn't yet an Event Streaming platform of note.

 

Lastly, the point of grabbing Ninja is a long-term play for MS.  He's going to be fairly big & important during both the Next-Box launch cycle and Halo 6.

Not a surprise. Ninja bought his fans with him, but why would any other viewer go to Mixer over Twitch? More streamers would need to bring their content and fanbase with them to Mixer.

 

Also, ew, people use Youtube Gaming? Considering they stop your stream the moment they detect some sort of "copyrighted" content, I'm surprised anyone is streaming games on there, especially considering a lot of the music in games are copyrighted.

 

But what I'm most surprised, is that facebook gaming is even a thing... while still being bigger than Mixer.

If that were all of it, wouldn't twitch experience an identical drop? Mixer is loosing viewing hours as a straight percentage, not on an absolute scale.

Last time I touched mixxer a month or so ago the site was a slow mess and the quality garbage. Its no surprise that people would choose the much more polished Twitch or even YT streams to watch

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

We're seeing this same fracturing with businesses pulling their content from Netflix and going off to do their own streaming.

 

Pinch the wrong pennies, and your business tanks, along with that business model.

 

Now I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with Mixer, and choice is good, but if you want to cover all your bases, you have to stream to ALL of them, not exclusively on one. So far Twitch and Youtube are nice places to have a stream on, and have large "viewership", but their rules are not friendly to smaller streams at all. Smaller streamers will make mistakes. Not everyone is going to have the bandwidth, hardware and people resources to stream to all of them. Only big events, like MMORPG announcements or E3/PAX events will be able to pull that off.

 

My opinion is that the content producer/owner is better off putting their content on all platforms, and maybe focus interactivity on just one of them, if you interact at all.  Compared to Netflix and their knockoffs, there is no reason to have anything exclusive to any site, and since they're not live, there is no interactivity that can't be duplicated across all platforms.

i checked out both mixer and dlive to see how they are.....both dead only thing different is mixer has ninja and his viewer count. other then that both are same viewer and streamer wise.

and i never realized facebook gaming was very popular either but go fig on that

I never watched ninja, so I didn't care. if LTT, BlackPanthaa and Markiplier streamed on Mixer then I would watch them there, as I don't want to support twitch as a company.

Not really shocked.  Mixer has to fight not only the network effect (people stay on Twitch because other people are on Twitch), but the stigma of being associated with Microsoft.  You know, that middle-of-the-road corporate blandness that colours everything Microsoft does, making it feel like a calculated business decision ("we want some of Twitch's market, so let's buy a livestreaming service") instead of a passion project.  Mixer is technically dandy with its low-latency streaming and platform integration, but it's not cool -- and that's a put-off for many people.

I used to have a friend who thought inviting you round to watch him play his new game on his Playstation or N64 was a decent idea of a game night. Meanwhile the rest of us were using a couple of multitaps and playing 8 person Fifa whilst getting drunk and hurling abuse at each other across the room that would make your dear old mum shove knitting needles into her eardrums.  :)

It did. Mixer's fall was more pronounced, but everyone dropped, except Facebook. Apparently, everyone's watching FB in class :P

Eh, it's not for everyone. I haven't found anything worth watching live, like e.g. I do quite like the WAN-show and Laymen Gaming's ranty stream, but...do I get anything from watching those live instead of the archived version the next day? No, there's literally nothing that the stream being live adds to the experience for me. I still kinda understand the psychology behind why other people find such things so rewarding to watch live.

It depends. I used to watch some guy who was a regular streamer on GOG's Twitch channel. His name was Vlad (TheWeekendSlice), he was from Romania. His specialty were creepy games from GOG catalog and he was really cool. I don't know why I liked to watch him so much, but he just made cool jokes all the time, often explained things from Romanian mythology and stuff like that. And his English accent was interesting hehe. I kinda miss those days where I regularly tuned into GOG's channel in the evening when he was streaming and just listened to his commentary about the game or sometimes even totally offtopic stuff.

 

I also didn't mind being a co-pilot for games like Broken Sword that I used to play with my friend back in the day. Sure one was clicking and sometimes we switched places for rare action sequnces and timed stuff, but it was pretty cool just chatting about things, giving tips to one another, maybe having ideas how to beat some puzzle, where to go, what to pick, what to use where. It really wasn't annoying to just tag along instead of being sole active player. I guess that's how streaming works. Viewers often participate by giving clues to the streamer and helping them out with things so you're active with the game in a way.

Meanwhile the rest of us were using a couple of multitaps and playing 8 person Fifa whilst getting drunk and hurling abuse at each other across the room that would make your dear old mum shove knitting needles into her eardrums.  :)

 

Streaming... what a waste of time.

You've missed the point of streaming if that's all you think it is!

 

Sometimes it's about watching someone play at a level you can't possibly match (Ninja, Shroud and the like).  Personalities matter too; a good streamer is also a presenter who puts on a show.  Other times it's about the community, the shared experience with online friends.  Not every stream lives up to those goals, but those that do can be entertaining.

It's all just part of the self absorbed mentality of people today... it's all about 'look at me, notice me, worship me'... stop making stupid/worthless people famous.
