For the full review i hope they will do a performance comparison between Windows server, Windows 10 and Linux. Even more if Microsoft does not have Windows scheduler fixed by then as it probably won't do justice to this CPU with so many cores.

How long can it run when cooled using only the finest cheeseburger?

Two things I'd love to see:

  1. What kind of BOINC scores would this achieve?
  2. How many high-performance productivity VM's could we get running on this simultaneously?

Something like will definitely push the envelope for performance density in virtualization applications.

@GabenJrThese processors can do up to 16 operations per cycle with AVX2. At a 2.7GHz all core clock speed, you would see 2764.8 GFLOPS. Memory bandwidth is reportedly 264GBps. This is around the level of a GeForce GTX 670,  which probably could do crisis at maximum settings at 4K.

 

If you reached out to the guys doing swiftshader development at Google, they could probably tweak it to perform better. Just being able to use all 64 cores would be a substantial boost, to say nothing about using AVX2. Getting its LLVM backend to target AVX2 should be another boost, if it does not do it already. My guess is that it does not.

 

Also, swiftshader claims to support Vulkan. If you got it to take full advantage of the Rome processor, you might be able to use DXVK to do Direct3D10/11 to Vulkan to get it to render most modern titles on the CPU.

1. 8280M supports 2TB while 8280L supports 4.5TB max memory.

2. That Supermicro board does not officially support Windows 10. Actually, none of the Rome systems have OS support for Windows 10. Where are you getting your drivers from?

All the obvious stuff aside: Can you run Anno on this in the next Video? I mean with a ton of Ram and 64 Cores this thing basically asks for playing Anno in lategame. :D

An APU Mac Mini would actually be pretty good.

Sounds like AMD is going to replace threadripper (from a workstation home user and datacenter view).

So here my thoughts about it:

1. the 16 core 2950x (900$) and the epyc one (single 7302P - 825$ & dual 7282 650$ / 7302 978$) - sounds like kind of "no server premium" to me

2. why get a cpu with 60 PCIe lanes, when I can have 128 lanes for mostly the same price

3. kind of double the RAM bandwith in epyc - virtual systems will love this

4. no way for Intel Xeon W - the 16 core is more than twice the price

5. running a SAP Hana system with one 2U system and not a Huawei 9008 with 8x E7-8880 v4 - wohooo less inter CPU com performance problem shit

6. I've get a Dell system with dual CPU and quad GPU for VDI testing with GPU acceleration, 2x ConnectX 6 (one port is used for storage & one for user traffic - redundant setup) NVMe SSD's only for local caching. From my testing I could replace each HP c7000 rev.2 Bladesystem with G7&G8 Blades with one of these systems. (and there are 54 bladecenters is use - l could fit everything in three racks incl. storage -> less networking & cabeling shit + less power draw

No, TR will still be middle ground of clock speed and core count, between high clock-low cored mainstream and low speed-high cored server.

This may be the defaults setting for the Supermicro board but the CPU should be able to run in a single NUMA node. Patrick from STH has that info on their review that was shown on WAN show when EPYC second gen launched, It can be configured to run as 1, 2 or 4 NUMA nodes, granted Linus just glanced over the firsts pages and they are always busy at LTT, but i think this is something that should really be pointed out when the review is released.

 

Also that NUMA node config change could have helped a lot with the blender test and Crysis on CPU run using Windows.

This thing is quite insane, please re-do whatever gamers 1 CPU with this time actually only one instead of the multi-gpu setups before.

You have that insane 7-way gpu block, pci-e soft reset for AMD gpu's is fixed (or said differently: no need anymore to restart or reseat everything when the system crashes like you had to do with the fury system).
