I've been wanting an alternative to iOS and Android for a long time. And if this project is a success, we'll finally have an option. And it's an option that gives you full control, as Linux tends to do!

"The internal construction of the Librem 5 is absolutely wild. While smartphones today are mostly a single mainboard with every component integrated into it, the Librem 5 actually has a pair of M.2 slots that house full-size, off-the-shelf LTE and Wi-Fi cards for connectivity, just like what you would find in an old laptop. The M.2 sockets look massive on top of the tiny phone motherboard, but you could probably replace or upgrade the cards if you wanted."

I won't be getting it myself because I already have a perfectly functional Galaxy S9 and also I don't think it'll work on Verizon but hey

 

hopefully it'll see some moderate amount of attention, maybe more than windows phone and firefox os ever did

True, I'm on Verizon too and it's the only thing that works in my town, so I'm probably out of luck there.

I have seen this happen 3 other times. Remember how great the ubuntu phone was going to be?

It's a first gen product and the first of it's kind. So yes, it's bound to be expensive and a little rough around the edges (although I personally like the chunky modular design). The OS is the real selling point here for people who value privacy. If it becomes popular, the future iterations will be much more polished and feature-rich.

Well, being an open-source project, it's entirely possible another hardware manufacturer could knock something together with higher specs and plop the OS on there, since that work has been done. I'm way more interested in the OS than the hardware.

Check the unlock at about 5 seconds in.  Looks like you don't have to wait long.

Looks like hey wanted to buy open-source hardware as much as possible instead of making their own or relying on closed-source stuff.  Seeing as all the main cellphone component manufacturers make everything closed-source, that kinda limits them to the lower end of the spectrum ... or in this case parts that were never designed for smartphone use at all.  

 

The Blackphones had reasonable specs because Silent Circle relied solely on their hardened version of Android and their apps to do all the privacy stuff.  The hardware itself was closed-source and hence no more privacy-oriented than the average Android phone's hardware.

It's worth noting that their software is closed-source as well, which makes it much harder to verify their claims.  Security through obscurity usually doesn't last. 

 

 

 

I wouldn't mind getting one, but I'm not ordering it directly from Purism.  That kind of international package is certain to be detoured to a 3-letter agency for the installation of additional software. I'm not taking that chance. 

Besides, I already spent way too much on phones the last couple of years.  I'm very unlikely to buy a new one in the next 4 or 5 years.

Considering the Raspberry Pi of all things now rocks Cortex A72s, I don't see why the need to settle for low clocked Cortex A53s.

Tbh I think this is more of a proof of concept. They showed that you can build an entirely FoSS phone, without Android or proprietary firmware, and that you can actually ship it. I was actually just thinking about this very topic a few days ago and I wasn't sure if it would be possible in any practical manner. This phone is definitely more than I would have expected. It looks somewhat decent. Yeah, it's not a modern phone, it looks more like an Android phone in its early days, not a modern phone who a normal user would want to buy now. And I don't think anyone should really buy it, except for the people who are really interested in the topic of an open source linux phone and would like to try it out themselves (and who can afford spending $700 just for this).
