After Project Shadow it is time for something new and to testing skills...

I want to create my first Scratch-Build, maybe i can not post every day some updates but i try to update the project every week.

The Project

The project is a Terminal-PC what you know it from one of the Fallout games with some nice hardware and custom watercooling. The Terminal it self is made out of Wood and a bunch of 3D printed parts. The idea for this i found on a russian 3d-print page (]3dtoday.ru don´t worry it is safe ;) ). The creator uplouded all files for the 3D printer and the wood stuff, he would be exited if some one fills with real Hardware and i thougt it is no problem and for the first Scratch Build not so a bad idea... The CAD model was a normal 2D so i decided to re do it in 3D to get a idea of the dimension. The Wood stuff is already at home and some test with the 3D-Printer are finished now i have to order the Filament and to print all the parts, maybe it will take 2 weeks for all the parts.
Today i will take some pics and add it.

Hi LTT

The first steps with the printer was.... how can i say… terrible is the right word for it, but after reading a lot about 3d printing i find my way and now i can show you the first parts.

74aWUvN.jpg?1

I chose the biggest parts for testing the printer but for the first time, not so bad xD

rNXDHwr.jpg?1

One problem what i have is the "wraping", the prints do not stuck on the printer bed,
The problem is that the bed is to cold so the parts start to wrap.
To solve the problem i have to heat up the bed a little bit more and so i hope they stuck better on it.

Hi bit-tech

After a long time now a big update.
I had a lot of problems with the 3D Printer. The first was the wraping of the prints but that was not the last one...

0t46NXh.jpg?1   rTSfiry.jpg?1

The Frame is one of the biggest prints for the Fallout Terminal it was 17 Hours print time but after the half work it stops to print...
After a lot of searching on google, i saw the Nozzle of the printer was full of dust and no chance to clean it up so i had to change it and after change it works fine.

Z13X1WB.jpg?1

Now next one was a problem with losing steps because the belt that moves the printer head was not tight enough, so the prints have some errors in to it because the belt slips and the position of the head was not like in the program.

dlC2byP.jpg?1

The answer of the problem is the print is fallen down there was no good adhesion of printer bed and the print it self.

qG9gxyV.jpg?1

One day at November we had a lot of snow around 50 cm at the morning and power failure and this is the result.

cEPJtaY.jpg?1    nOWpVkd.jpg?1

And the worst case was this... A cable from the board of the printer to the heated bed was getting to warm and i was lucky that no fire destroyed my office.

261AzEi.jpg?1

But after the hole problems i finished the prints for my Fallout Terminal!!

You guys know my first mod J.A.R.V.I.S. there i used 2x240mm radiator to cool the system. Just at the beginning i was sure that the 240mm are too small for it.

So i decide to update it!

The feeling at work was like the scene in Iron Man 3 where Tony meets the boy in the shed ... xD

3.thumb.jpg.7b956d0d46fda45ac05c891c08004b63.jpg4.thumb.jpg.e0aa75b549dcacb077bad226298a4c27.jpg5.thumb.jpg.edd40e97588ccce9a780c595f830935e.jpg

Hi LTT

Some tests how it fits.

Terminal_ZSB_3.thumb.jpg.82abb96eee408ce06ba598767732fefe.jpgTerminal_ZSB_2.thumb.jpg.174acaf6d5b2ff714f115ee125af2d71.jpgTerminal_ZSB_4.thumb.jpg.4ccb8a4704f21dcb11d9cd753d769539.jpgTerminal_ZSB_6.thumb.jpg.a7fe58bd087983282f5952c9d5a50ea4.jpg

The biggest problem are the two 240mm Radiators i Need fresh air to cool the System.

Terminal_ZSB_1.thumb.jpg.a0f431cc834b80c9716058324d803331.jpgTerminal_ZSB_1.thumb.jpg.a0f431cc834b80c9716058324d803331.jpgTerminal_ZSB_7.thumb.jpg.b70852daa1c7aff06e0a436f9145b9a6.jpg

Mi first idea was to redo the bottom of the Terminal with a aluminum plate so i can get some space to get fresh air from the bottom. This week i will do a new CAD model so i can show you my idea in pictures.

Sorry about the bad quality of the pics but the battery of mi Canon was empty… xD

I will add detailed pictures of the components in a few days, it is now too late

The hardware is not what I'm going to use, it´s to show how big the terminal is and if I have room for all that stuff xD

Hi LTT,

Some new stuff for the Project :D

It took awhile to find a 1080p-Display that fits but after a Long time i found this beauty here

hHdPitF.jpg.4da91b5a55168f65eae1132daebe326a.jpgXHowsFJ.jpg.87bccb284f129ddbd5fcb6e5e06b694d.jpglPdsh9Q.jpg.fd62da62036fc7df30362298847be2ee.jpg

Sorry for the dust, but the acrylic is a bit sensitive to dust and my fingers xD

G1fsqlj.jpg.2fbe19da52620f70e42d646686ac6248.jpg

I bougt it on Amazon, actually is this a Display for the Raspi but after removeing some stuff that i don´t Need it was realy good quallity if some one Need a Display for home Automation or the Raspi then I can only receive it.

zgcvIdL.jpg.5046b03432c40a27b839d03b7a6b38fc.jpg

After a test with a Youtube Video with Resolution in 1080p i was surprised how clear it is.

The mouse is a normal touchpad. It was difficult to find one of this size.

I don't currently have the keyboard, but I have a special idea for the project...

9TNRzrN.jpg.801df1ff633c20d7f32f1109b856864a.jpg

Now some details to the CAD model

Behind the Vault-tec Logo are some leds to illuminate the logo... not so special...

The eye catcher are on the Right side you know the two white boxes a few updates before? ;)

oScUy7F.jpg?1  0ayQJCw.jpg?1

Some Nixie-Tubes, they Show the number 76.... :D

At the Moment they are not tested yet it was no time for it but its on my to do list for next week...

Next update soon…

Hi LTT,

Last weekend i was able to test the Nixies…. :clap:finally...

NQZozUh.jpg?1

LuKPGfc.jpg?1

They are looking pretty nice and for this kind of project a nice eye catcher.

I use IN-4 Nixie tubes for those who don't know what Nixies are click the Link: Wikipedia Nixie tube

Ht7GgPj.jpg?1

Last but not least the PSU for the Nixies they need up do 150 Volt...

I am based in South Tirol it is in northern Italy and we have here the Problem of the COVID 19 (Coronavirus) i hope i can always post some updates because it's difficult to order the last pieces.
A friend is cutting the alu Frame if he can work the whole week. So i can add a new update at the end of the week if not so we have to wait until it's over… :)

I wish a nice evening everyone!

Hi bit-tech

I am at home for 2 weeks now and another week i have to stay home... :wallbash:

Luckily the project goes on and i can print the whole day...

SV86URR.jpg?1

So now the frame is a little bigger than the old one so i had to split it into 4 pieces because the printer isn't big enough... xD

LCQbrgc.jpg?1 9bvApmq.jpg?1

The first pic you see is the cover for the LED that lights out the Vault-Tec logo and the second pic is the Nixie-Tube mount at the moment not finished yet the screw holes for the socket are missing.

FmbLUTI.jpg?1  z8VD7V3.jpg?1  FHPXyRH.jpg?1  xfG2U5E.jpg?1

This is the construction of the on/off switch, to much pieces and too complicated to assembling and maybe a source of error.

kT6j7pV.jpg?1  Zqew78V.jpg?1

So i decide to refresh the old concept, much easier and better than the first one.
The only thing i have to resolve is that the holotape comes out of it self of the tape deck that the switch isn't pressed the whole time, maybe a system with spring will help to come back out from it self...

qn5Ye5x.jpg  7e1Rs6x.jpg  niz9A1Y.jpg  bjJIBYL.jpg

Now a small rendering shows how it should look like when it's finished.
The hardware is not yet the one used, it is only a template from grabcad.com you can free download a lot of stuff there not only. computer stuff.

I don't know when I can release the next big updates for the aluminum frame because our companies are still closed for a week and many parts are missing ...
Also for the keyboard i am searching all the parts i need but its not so easy to find exactly what i need.
The next problem is the cooling of the system and the hardware at the moment it is not a sponsor build so i have to buy by my own but let us see what the future bring.

I wish you a nice weekend at home and stay healthy!!!

I can finally show you the aluminum frame!
I cleaned and assembled it to make sure that all the parts fit together.

Tomorrow I will get the new side panels because the frame is now different from the wooden one, so I had to have new side panels milled.
I will add more pictures soon.

Hi LTT

Here you see the old concept in wood and the new one in aluminum, as you can see there are small differences... xD

I81muEO.jpg?1  k8leKNS.jpg?1

What I really need is a better place to get the worklog photos for even better shots, with photo lights, and maybe a black / gray background

bviUPqi.jpg?1 9h5ha1p.jpg?1

Today I was able to get the last wooden parts, now they are still being prepared to match the others, then we can start assembling the terminal for the first time.

Stay tuned!

Sanding will be your best friend they said.... i was laughing... but they were right... 🤦‍♂️
I wasn't idle, but it's a lot of work to make it perfect. xD

A very small update:

5BX46fw.jpg?1

First layer of two component putty

bOteygz.jpg?1

First layer of primer and putty of the holes that were not visible the first time
And sanding again until all holes are sealed with putty...

KQP9wH0.jpg?1  EfKKG0Q.jpg?1  XEO6VBz.jpg?1  7g829Uv.jpg?1

With this mechanism I can insert a screw from the outside in and screw it to the frame with a nut.
The screw is glued with thread adhesive so that everything is in place, the screw holes are puttied from the outside to get a clean surface.

RLAf6iq.jpg?1  eJuuvkV.jpg?1

Next update it will be a little special so stay tuned 🤙

Not my cup of tea but the effort is commendable. Good Job!

A couple comments:

  • I would stay away from wood as they will age poorly. I would recommend FRP or some kind of composite.
  • You should really model with the wiring on the inside. Usually people dont do this with custom case builds and have trouble getting the wiring to fit.

Good Luck!

Hi LTT

There is not much to say, at the moment i have not a lot of time because i am moving to my new apartment with my girlfriend so we have to organize a lot of stuff...

But i can proudly present my first sponor for this project 🤙😎

QcVeLr5.png?2

Cherry send some goodies to me!!
I wanted to wait for all of the parts at Candykeys to be in stock, but the Covid-19 was causing bottlenecks in delivery

4m5dVgx.jpg?1 7TUCzR8.jpg?1

I choose the Cherry MX blue because the acoustics of the switches are perfect for me, because they sound like the original.

aBMouok.jpg?1

Cherry also sent me a switch tester so it was possible to compare the switches.
If any of you want to build your own keyboard, I can only recommend you have a look at cherrymx.de and let yourself be surprised what they offer.
I'm not using RGB because I have not seen already  a terminal with an RGB keyboard in Fallout. xD
But if you want to build your own, they also have switches with RGB, so I think there is something for everyone 😁

Don't miss -> cherrymx.de

Enough advertising for today I wish you a nice weekend!

Hi LTT

Finally i am back at my project!!
So it's time for a small update.

I painted parts of the terminal with the first epoxy layer

3Idnhn5.jpg?1  gwdwPLh.jpg?1  D1juVPw.jpg?1

Now I have to wait for it to dry and then repeat 2 or 3 times before I can fit into the 3D parts.
After fitting, all holes and scratches must be sealed with putty and prepared for painting.

There is still a lot of stuff missing what i need to finish the project and one of those things is the keyboard do any of you know where I can get DIY keyboards?

Stay tuned next update coming soon :dremel:

Hi LTT finally i can show you some new stuff

After sealing with epoxy and sanding, a lot of adjustments had to be made one of it is the mounting of the front.

1JBLxZ5.jpg?1

To fix the display frame and the keyboard frame to the terminal, I used a Pattex two-component adhesive, screws and an aluminum angel, now it shouldn't move anywhere.

0DRerJF.jpg?1  v6bdA7Q.jpg?2 P80cuB9.jpg?1

You can see it's very tight, but it fits.  Only one thing does not fit, the fans on the front radiator (red circle) I measured it according to the CAD model it fitted, but in reality it is 3 millimeters too high.:wallbash:  So now the question should i mod my fans or should i switch zu low profile fans?

slCEekN.jpg?1  VCmseRr.jpg?1

It doesn't look so good in the photos, but in reality looks really good once the screen is connected.

Now i have to search a 60% PCB for my keyboard, not so easy to get one and some parts for the water cooling are missing then i should have all parts together.
I also have an idea for something special for the water cooling but it is still a long way :winking:

Hi LTT

Today i will show you the next special thing of the project the new water tank :dremel:
It is a glass bottle in Nuka Cola style.
The work goes on, but I am still missing some parts, many things are unfortunately not in stock, such as the keyboard, so I have to do everything else first.

wIPD4O9.jpg?1  pWTM2C7.jpg?1

I've already made the hole for the connection below, just need to glue the tube for the fitting and the label then the tank should be ready

More pictures soon, I've already taken more of my work, but I don't have the time to write the work log at the moment, so it is only a small update

Now I need to print parts for the tank and find the rest of the hardware I need and decide what to do with my graphics card. I think it's too long for that build :waah:

I wish you a nice Sunday, see you soon

Hi LTT

A little update on the project, unfortunately, just a bit boring, but it has to be.
A lot of preparation like sinking the screws in the aluminum ...

wKiVSvQ.jpg?1

Another point is preparing the bracket for my GPU, it was planned to use my Asus 1060 Strix, but you can see that the GPU is too long and will later cover the glass bottle... :worried:
An alternative would be a 1650, 1660 Mini ITX, if anyone wants to sell one please let me know, thanks.

It was time to glue and prepare the first parts to start painting later, a lot of work and sanding is not my favorite job I noticed... xD

an insight into how the front is connected to the terminal.
The aluminum angles are glued to the front and then screwed to the terminal and glued.

In the past few days everything was primed and some parts got some paint.

A good friend has a paint booth and I can use it for free

Next step, control all parts if there a no big scratches or holes to fill, if everything is okay i will begin with the final color.

The problem with the fan is now solved...
Noctua sends me 4 Chromax black low profile for this I would like to thank you very much!!

And that's why I made my first unboxing video, more videos will follow. So if you want to follow my channel I would be happy :thumb:

Stay tuned...

Hi LTT

X0Ayjxb.jpg?1  Gz43MTI.jpg?1  XkrLP3S.jpg?1

The first layer was painted blue, but when painting the parts it was noticed that the primer absorbs a little more paint than expected, so one layer unfortunately is not enough, it has to be painted twice so that the color is even and clean. The side parts have already been prepared with putty again, only I'm not sure whether we should prime the putty again or not, but that can only be tried next time.

The time has come

The parts for the keyboard were available ...

tybcQuZ.jpg?1

Thanks to David from candyskeys.com for his patience. We wrote what felt like 1000 emails back and forth because many things were not available due to Corona. Luckily it worked now and I can finally get on with the keyboard.:thumb:

Unfortunately, I have to tell you some bad news due to the increasing number of cases here in South Tyrol (Italy), certain communities are now red zones, which means I can only move on my work and within my home community so there are unfortunately no further updates on Painting because that's not around the corner from me, unfortunately. :waah:

But there are at least updates for the construction of the keyboard... :dremel:

Hi LTT

There is a big update as I finally take the time to keep writing.
It's been a bit quiet here lately but that doesn't mean I haven't done anything ... xD

Unfortunately, Covid-19 does not make my life easy for me I was in domestic isolation for 20 days, South Tyrol was also the red zone and there were curfews, so I was not allowed to leave my village, which means that nothing went ahead with the paint job because my buddy doesn't live in the same village.
Well it doesn't matter then everything else was next like the keyboard, 3D printing etc. :dremel:

The first coat of primer revealed to me some bigger holes and scratches that couldn't stay, I will save you the whole process of sanding the parts that we had enough of it

JznHfVb.jpg?1  hr6ATig.jpg?1

You know the frame of the keyboard was silver that didn't seem to fit me so it was painted black so it fits better now.

The first draft of the keyboard case......

k0u22Ze.jpg?1  3aBWRYe.jpg?1

After 10 attempts, the desired result finally came from my printer ... Yes, my printer could use a little fine adjustment, but there is still time after the project ...
Now all i have to do is glue and paint, then that's ready. :dremel:

EiqB2n5.jpg?1

When the case was ready it was time to solder the keys. No big deal with a little Youtube everything went smoothly Cherry made a DIY video on the subject of custom keyboard that I can only recommend.

Since I was now at home, I found time to find a new GPU for the project, a Gainward GTX 1650 Pegasus which, as you can see, is much smaller and fits perfectly into the terminal because it doesn't cover everything like the Asus GTX 1060 Strix mine previous choice.
I bought the GPU on Ebay for a good price and since no gaming monitor is controlled but a full HD display, the card is sufficient in every respect.

rV7UGpE.jpg?1  9AVHTnN.jpg?1  I1WbCvD.jpg?1  b1OmESb.jpg?1

The card should get a special cooling, since I still had a VGA block from EKWB at home i want to use it now.
To do this, first disassemble the card into individual parts

FjMdqrX.jpg?1

Now I noticed that the frame doesn't fit, that's a bit annoying, it has now been redrawn in the AutoCad and laser cut.
What doesn't fit is made to fit ...
More on the subject as soon as more images are available.

The terminal should look used and be provided with rust and scratches. In game who knows it there is an apocalyptic mood and the atomic fallout is also affecting the objects, i was looking for the right techniques for a long time after a lot of searching on Google i came in the model making sector numerous tutorials later began the first attempts...
I found the right colors around here in a toy shop that also sells different models, the colors are from the Revell brand and water-soluble, so perfect for me if something goes wrong you can wipe it off again. :naughty:
In addition, there were some coarse and fine brushes, toothpicks to mix and most importantly a sponge.

S8eWFC0.jpg?1

Some paint is picked up with the coarse brush and wiped off on a piece of cardboard so that there is only very little paint on the brush then you can start working on the corners this technique is called dry brushing.

nhn1B8i.jpg?1  NGvkM03.jpg?1  KZWSHqE.jpg?1  NGtgqT8.jpg?1

A before and after comparison.

BHoAzmp.jpg?1

Let everything dry once then the grate ...
For this, the paint was diluted with water and the sponge was used to create an uneven layer with the small dabs and, importantly, again little paint, the result can be seen ...

w1PaIWv.jpg?1

Of course, a healthy patina should not be missing on the Holotape. Like everything else, it was first sanded and primed, then applied with a brush the individual colors then wiped over with a cloth and heavily thinned black acrylic paint.
The screws are still missing

qzdkYV8.jpg?1  prKvSxv.jpg?1  eQ7VMd6.jpg?1  ccuPWxR.jpg?1

It then finally went on with the painting, unfortunately only the inside so that everything can be assembled and still gets its final painting on the outside
that means filling and sanding....

ailrb28.jpg?1  Lqxshvt.jpg?1

Unfortunately we only noticed later that we could have thinned the paint a bit so there was a light orange peel but it could be straightened with bows (1500 grit).

cWqqnxu.jpg?1  jz2QQAZ.jpg?1

Sure, you could have painted it again to get a smooth and beautiful finish, but since the terminal isn't new, the rag and acrylic paint have all of the pieces worked over to make them look too dirty. So it doesn't matter if they have small holes or scratches

karThLy.jpg?1

The method with the rag and the large brush was also used for the mainboard tray.

9wG5KhP.jpg?1  djvkIxM.jpg?1

A little glimpse of what it looks like in assembly...

taswS16.jpg?1  pUfUbrC.jpg?1  xp9f3Eb.jpg?1

I could have tidied the table, but I hope you will forgive me xD

So there is more that I can show you but I'm too tired for that today...

Let me know what you think of the project!

Thanks for reading and see you soon
