I've always said they'd be better off putting a SFF windows desktop at each desk and eliminating homework as a policy. It'd cost them less.

 

Fun fact: Schools that actually charge their students parents for repairs (I am aware of one customer that actually goes after them for them money) sees FAAAR less repairs needed. As in, in one week, they give us fewer repairs, than the schools that do not, in one day.

I have never suggested, nor would I ever suggest, giving anyone, ANY apple product. (I do not limit this to schools. If I was an employer in the IT industry, I would ask anyone applying for a job if they owned any apple products. If the answer was yes, I would throw their resume in the trash)

 

I would suggest banning them. We actually got apple certified a year ago. The policy is, "no repairs, ever". As far as I can tell.

 

And it's not a country wide thing, I can only speak for my state and the counties we service. Note that I live in the US. Each state and county have their own policies and laws about how these things are handled.

 

We also have the problem of the teachers being completely fucking retarded (as is typical, in my experience, of the public education sector) when it comes to technology.

 

So no. These are not great teaching aids. Even if they were, what is being taught is likely useless as well.

 

Edit: I believe there is probably a significant cultural difference between the two of us in regards to where we live. I am speaking purely of my own region. I wouldn't buy these kids a fucking thing, if it were up to me.

Well you wouldn't own it if the school lent it to you, so it would not be a pc. If you bought it, then it would be.

 

PC stands for personal computer, not Windows as many imply. I fucking hate that.

Having SFF desktops could ruin flexibility, though (sometimes desks are added or replaced).

Somewhat easily solved. Use local wifi AP's and overbuild them, and use roving, network based accounts.

 

ChromeBox's are a thing, but I'd argue that they're still idiotic.

 

There is a point, that ease of use, becomes less about making something accessible and focuses more on reinforcing stupidity/ignorance.

I mean I live in the US too and I know how kids can be. Honestly though the issue is your working tech in or for public schools. GET OUT DUDE lol. People are underpaid, under qualified, corruption is everywhere, drug abuse is skyrocketing, and the quality of education is abysmal. But for some kids were they can't afford a phone or computer it's a invaluable tool for them.

Luckily this year a few of my teachers agree with that.

Most people could do all their day-to-day stuff on 500$ computers or 200$ phones but just as a status symbol they buy devices for much more like iPhones and 3k gaming rigs.

it's an incredible waste of money and resources

Windows Phones were really cool, innovative, fast, pretty and most importantly different.

 

They provided a great and promising alternative to iOS and Android that was unfortunately slowly butchered by series of terrible decisions, but had they had better app support and coverage they would have been a real joy to use. The OS itself was a lot of fun to use and had a lot of very good ideas well-implemented, some of which, years before Android or iOS caught up on them. I really miss my yellow Lumia 820 !

I actually suspect we top out at around 90hz,but I really wish someone tested this thoroughly. My hypothesis is that we have variable sampling rates and under stress can run at a higher perception rate than under relaxed conditions.

 

I also suspect that the refresh rate probably matters up until it is refreshing some factor faster than our native sample rate, simply because we are not refreshing every photoreceptor at once, and seem to be able to make decisions without requiring a full set of pixels. 

 

But again, it needs testing.

Oh boy.

  1. I like playing around with Linux, I'll never recommend it for someone.
  2. Apple isn't the worst company ever, they're actually important for both desktop and mobile ecosystems.  They're the only major competitor to Microsoft on the desktop,and Google on the mobile market (in terms of OS).
  3. While Amazon is "omega evuls!" because of brick and mortar businesses unable to keep up (or for a lot of them, refusing to keep up), they are important to online shopping.
  4. RTX is a gimmick.  I do not think you should buy an RTX 2060 Super, 2070 Super, etc, just for the RTX function.  
  5. VR is a gimmick.

Currently focusing on my video game collection.

It doesn't matter what you play games on, just play good games you enjoy.

my terrible laptop: CPU: i5-2450M at 2.60 ghz base (however goes up to 3.30 ghz on any steam game i run. odd.) GPU: integrated Quadro NVS 4200m (garbage. the reason that this is terrible.) 6GB of ram, 300GB HDD. refurbished Dell Latitude Esomething. got it for like 140 bucks on amazon.

MacOS is the most enclosed mainstream OS yet since 2010, and the worst due to that. Apple's coolers for their cpus are so bad the CPU reaches 93 degrees in a best case scenario, and I'm shocked that they last more than a week. I have opinions, and then I have opinions that are backed up with facts.

 

Probably the strongest "I will have a 4 hour argument with you over this" one, is "game cheats(modding, microtransactions, etc) are not fun"

1) You have the right to play the game the way you want to. You do not have the right to destroy another persons enjoyment of the game for your enjoyment.

2) You have the right to enjoy the game with your friends. You do not get to twist someones arm to join your foray into game hacking/modding.

 

The argument comes up more often in the context of MMO games because there is a large segment of MMO users who see nothing wrong with buying all the microtransaction trash (incentivized cheating/gambling), and there are people who see that as morally bankrupt by the people who engage in it and the publishers who push it. Yet, many of the same people who argue against one form of cheating, see nothing wrong with modding a game with their own improvements. Both groups of people I would shed no tears over if they get banned.

 

The next loudest argument "Light rail is trash", light rail is not rapid transit.

1) The people who advocate the hardest for light rail, are laser-focused on the cost, not the benefit to society. Thus they see 7 billion dollars being spent on a 4-stop subway and go "but you could have a 400 stop light rail network for that!" But that's a false narrative. What they really see is the 7 billion dollar price tag and would rather see nothing built, or garbage light rail built for 100 million instead so they aren't subsidizing a system they have no intent on using.

2) The government's today only put forward a pot of money for transit. The choice of transit tends to be up to the politicians, who tend to hear from the business leaders in the community, not the transit-riding community. So what happens is that someone floats the idea of holding transit riders captive by changing the technology used with every expansion of transit, so the transit riders are forced to waste more time to leave the community to get to their jobs, making the transit time a joke and going back to using their car. (In a sense, the light rail being a way to hold poorer residents without a car captive inside the community and making it difficult and expensive to leave. Light rail always comes at the expense of the bus system it replaces.)

3) at-grade light rail ends up being suggested purely for aesthetic/cost reasons because rapid transit requires grade separation for both the safety of the passengers riding it, and the pedestrians and vehicle traffic that cross it. Occasionally you get light rail projects that get one thing right (grade separation like with Seattle or Ottawa) but then destroy the "rapid" part of the transit by not automating it, and not removing the human element that increases the cost to operate and maintain light rail. 

 

 

Everyone loves the Apple, except the people who don't know why Apple is the way it is.

1) Apple's products are a "complete experience" , If you buy an Apple product, you don't need to buy other products to use it. Unlike Microsoft Windows machines or Android devices. In some cases the experience on Android is extremely infuriating because two devices might look the same on the outside, but one device won't run the apps the other will. The same with Windows machines. Do you have a 32-bit version of Windows 10 running on a Pentium branded CPU? Which Pentium? G4560? Or the G860T from 8 years ago? There comes a point where people give up and just know that what they want to do can be done with the Apple device off-the-shelf. Apple has also shyed away from "rubbish tier" equipment, though that doesn't mean everything they make is good.

2) Apple's products are a Luxury product. Yes you can get the exact same parts in a Dell for about $200 less. That doesn't mean you saved $200. That's only looking at the hardware value and considering the software worth $0. Even Microsoft Windows cost at least $20 to an OEM. How much does Microsoft Office cost for a perpetual license versus installing Open Office on a mac, or using Apple's own Office software that you can get for free?

3) Apple's devices are probably pushing it for price/value. I do not personally see any value it smartphones having retail costs higher than $600. With that said I bought a $2000 iPhone, which is the most amount of money I've ever spent on a single thing since the first laptop. Do I feel it justified? Just barely. I would certainly balk at paying $2000 for a TV/Computer Screen, or "speaker/assistant", as I see the computer portions of these devices as not outliving the basic device they are part of, and the same reason why I wouldn't buy an iMac. I could very well justify Spending that much on an upgradable Mac Pro however. https://www.apple.com/ca/mac-pro/ , I hope at least some MB/Chasis OEM sees this design and goes "I can do that better", because I certainly would want to buy a HEDT tower that had the PCIe slots arranged that way so that all the slots can be used and not limited to the 1995 ATX layout. 

 

The problem is a lot of non-Apple fans kinda look at the price and don't see past it, and like the light rail argument above, and the microtransactions in games, if you are looking at the initial investment cost as the entire decision and not the entire lifecycle (energy use, maintenance, insurance, disposal, environmental costs, etc) you really are making poor decisions. A free or $70 game, with a monthly spend of $100 in microtransactions costs far more than a subscription game of $10-20/mo, and costs far more than a $70 game with no DLC or microtransactions period. A light rail system might costs 1/10th the cost of a proper rapid transit system, but it requires 7 times the amount of costs to operate, and doesn't encourage people to stop driving, because it doesn't go where people want to go, when they want to go. An Apple device might cost more up front, but you can get 5-7 years out of it, and maybe even more if your business needs aren't at risk. You can not say the same of Dell or HP or Lenovo. The Wintel platforms have a set lifespan of 3 years, because you aren't getting high end parts, you're getting the minimum they can still profit from when competing with each other. Apple is not in competition with Dell, HP and Lenovo. Dell is in competition with HP and Lenovo. 

 

With that said, people will stan for certain tech and I'm just not going to invest my time in people trying to change their mind. Either you agree with me that X piece of tech is good or bad, or you do not. You will not convince me that your BYO Dell is better than an Apple iMac. If you are someone who is absolutely hard on their products (eg you have children, pets, or you're just clumsy) I'd suggest going with the Dell and avoid the Expensive Apple kit, because repairing it will be far more expensive and you will be without it longer, where as Dell will send someone to you to fix your device.

Homework is pointless. I don't see why teachers can't understand that students want to do things other than school.

Luckily this year a few of my teachers agree with that.

What some of my teachers did, was to give us tasks in class you should have time to do in classes, but had to do at home if we did not, it was very effective to get people in my class to work effectively in class....

Voice assistants are trash and are only useful as a party trick. 

 

Windows 10 is the best OS Microsoft ever made.

 

I have no problem with DRM and don't get why so many people hate it.

 

Easy and Normal difficulties in most games are made for children and/or disabled people.

 

Normal users who obsess over programs spying on them are ridiculous (or they're pedophiles).

 

Westerners who buy a new overpriced phone every year are throwing away money.

 

Gray markets for game keys are awesome. Never pay more than you have to.

 

99% of users can't see any difference between 1080p and, say, 4K during normal use. I know I can't.
