Soundblaster Live for anything from Windows 98 to Windows XP.  You can even stretch it into Windows 10 if you are not afraid of community written drivers.

For DOS, I would have to say Gravis UltraSound is the gold standard.

Look for some cards with Aureal Vortex 2 chip of you want good 3D sound but not perfect compatibility with DOS games. Look for Creative SoundBlaster cards or some cards with good FM chips if you want good music reproduction in older games ...

How retro do you want to go? if you mean DOS games, see channels that are into stuff like that.. .Phil's Computer Lab, forums like https://www.vogons.org/ and its wiki

Don't ask for best if it's for retro games a generic sound card from Asus for like $50 should be fine.

Thought that MIDI port was Mcintosh's MCD port for their CD players, i need to stop buying mcintosh gear ._.

LTT's Resident Porsche fanboy and nutjob Audiophile.

Main speaker setup is now;

Mini DSP SHD Studio -> 2x Mola Mola Tambaqui DAC's (fed by AES/EBU, one feeds the left sub and main, the other feeds the right side) -> 2x Neumann KH420 + 2x Neumann KH870

(Having a totally seperate DAC for each channel is game changing for sound quality)
