What keeps you excited about technology?

I am 31 so I imagine I am older than a high percentage of people on here. I grew up playing video games and all that stuff but as an adult when new things come out I honestly couldn't care less unless I actually need it for something. I don't get excited about new tech and am actually finding happiness going the other direction by limiting the tech in my life. 

 

What keeps you guys interested?

It's fun to mess with PCs and the performance improves all the time so you can torture new products and see how far that clock speed can go.

Just to preface, I'm 19, so we're very different generations. :D I guess what keeps me excited is the amount of things to learn and explore.

 

I've been into the PC game for about 2 years and I'm yet to explore it all, the evolutionary nature of technology keeps me on my feet to learn all about it and dive deeper into it as a hobby. Unfortunately PC hardware gets expensive so I've only been able to watch from the rafters.

I think the fact that I have it as a hobby is in itself enough to keep me excited, I love seeing what new ideas and innovations companies come up with, whether it be mobile devices, laptops, desktops, keyboards, peripherals, or in some cases, software.

With the constant forward motion of technology these days, I’m always excited for something new. Something that pulls off something previously thought impossible, something that improves something else that was already fantastic. Just like @sowon said, it’s really a hobby. It’s fun to track what the latest and greatest is.

 

being an ultra low budget gamer, new releases tend to drop prices of older hardware. This gets me excited too, as then I can afford an upgrade.

That wow feeling of feeling like a kid looking at pictures of Sci-Fi futures. Things that have done this are the Wii, Vive, google glass, hololens, and 8K OLED TVs

What excites me about technology is the fact that it is a is very versatile and very rapidly progressing field that concerns practically everyone and has great potential to change the way we live our lives (both positively and negatively). There are so many inventions made on a regular basis that hardly ever cease to amaze me.

It is almost scary to think how different technology was even just 10-20 years ago.

For me, idle hands are the devils workplace (however I am not religious, I just understand what this means).  I find that working with technology allows me to think, learn, investigate, scrounge, save $$$, create a plan, make something, help people with their somethings, etc.  There is a fun level of anticipation with new builds, that I also have to be honest and say that after I build something I usually go...why? I don't have a REAL use case for a lot of the things I do.  But during the process, its fun.

 

Its also the future (technology) (obviously) and fortune favors the prepared in all things.  Id rather know, than be oblivious to the technology available.

 

Also, I like Frankensteining things and making them work.  Shoots you in the foot once in a while but its fun.

 

TBH right now Im semi bored with technology, as I don't want to spend the money on a CPU or GPU as what I have is quite functional for my Use Case.  So right now I am working on old tech - rebuilding an FX 8350, using a massive air cooler, then going to loop it - all in an attempt to find 5.0 ghz on that chip.  Why?  Cause its nearing winter.  ;)

Usually it takes needing to get new equipment that gets me excited. If my PC is solid and my phone too, I don't get hyped. Yeah Ryzen 3000 is awesome and the iPhone 11 is new, but I'm meh until it's upgrade time.

Technology is constantly pushing the boundaries and advancing in unforeseen ways. Sometimes it's scary or absurd, but overall it has improved our lives in amazing ways and I'm just excited to see how tech makes our lives a lot more interesting. But I do have to admit that I'm a bit weary of the environmental impact of this rapid advancement.

Will preface this by I am 19. I have existed entirely in the 21st century (although I do remember life before the iPhone) and technology has been a major part of my entire life. I got my first computer at age 4 (hand me down from my gran) and I was always good with tech (my mum said she felt officially old when I came in from school aged 9 and reset the wifi).

 

For me it's that I'm always waiting for the next big thing that will change how we interact with the world. With phones, well right now I am just looking for a way to avoid any sort of notch or hole punch (Samsung have at most a year to fix this or I'll jump ship to OnePlus). For computers, it's gaming performance. I get excited by high core count offerings from AMD forcing Intel to innovate and things like that because although I know I can't afford it now, I know that these technologies will trickle down in time. I mean who would have thought 3 years ago that you'd be able to get 8C16T CPUs on the mainstream platform? No one did, because Intel had locked it at 4 cores for so long.

 

I guess I stay excited because it's something that I'll never know everything about. By the time I've learned about one technology, another 4 exciting ones have jumped up. I'm pretty excited to see how far we get within my lifetime, who knows, maybe I'll make it to the 22nd century??? I can only hope

The non-stop bullet-train of new stuff to learn! I mean, even if you spent every single waking moment of your life studying tech, you wouldn't learn all of it. A 30ish peep here.

Considering hardware is one of my many hobbies, I find new tech interesting along with always something new to learn, especially concerning tech in vehicles at the moment (hybrids, electrics, the first forays towards self-driving vehicles).  Also, a former military aircraft mech, so I find tech concerning drones, quad copters, and the like interesting as well.  I also find AR headsets like the Holo Lens fascinating from a creative standpoint.
