Looking for suggestions on improving status updates

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

The current status updates implementation has some pretty fundamental issues (*cough* notifications *cough*), so I am looking into reimplementing it myself. If I do that, I want to know what changes you would like to see.

Please use this topic to post and discuss suggestions. I will be monitoring the topic, but don't expect to be super active in it - I am more interested in seeing what you have to say.

If your suggestion isn't directly related to status updates, please post it as a separate topic in Feature Suggestions instead.

Disclaimer: I'm not offering a roadmap for when any changes will take effect, and I reserve the right to change my mind and not change anything at all, for example if it turns out to be a lot of work.

If i go to "activity streams", view all status updates, then the first reply on any status update is missing, and it is annoying. If i want to view all the replies i would need to go to the persons page, and view the status update from there, then the "view more replies" button appears.

as I've actually suggested to you before this idea

have notifications say from what status the reply came from

as an example: user X replied to a status update: Y (user Z)

I would love to see (simple) polls (kind of like what Twitter has) in them.

At the moment, when you're opening a status update, you have to repeatably press the 'show more comments' button to have three extra replies each time. A 'show all replies' button would be convenient (spam pressing that button doesn't work either, because at the end of the stream, you would click on a profile name, making you have to do it all over again).

The notification showing who replied thing is obvious, so not gonna mention it. (Stacking notifications/showing whose update someone replied to)

This very much. Three replies at a time is so little, 20+ would be much better. :)

It would be nice if the mobile version of the site acted the same way as the desktop version in terms of notifications; when on mobile, if you get a notification from a reply/reaction to a status update, pressing it will take you to the profile of the person who wrote said status instead of taking you to the status update itself.

At the moment it does take you to the status, you just need to scroll down because the profile info is above it. I agree though that it sucks.

I never knew that, I always went through their entire content, cause it just seemed like it took me to the info page only, thank you.

maybe cap this at 21? there's that 400++ reply status thread out there and that sounds like a scrollbar bomb I'm not sure if it's desirable ,_,

  1. Please make it so that when someone replies to a Status Update I follow it says in the Notification from whom the Status itself is.
  2. Also if multiple people are replying and reacting to my Status Update then I don't want 5 Notifs for that - please burry all the activity on a Status Update into one Notification.
  3. Side Note: Whenever I browse the Forum and I get a Notif - the amount of Notifs it tells me I have in the bottom left corner isn't always the same amount as the bell shows me.

i would like to be brought to the status update instead of having to scroll through the entire page of profile info first(mobile)

notifications need to work like the ones for topics: "x,y,z and a amount of others replied to status update", also two notifications when someone @ s you is annoying

sometimes i cant make a status update from the front page thing and need to go through the menu(mobile, FF)

those are the ones that come to mind right away

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally)...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

This would be great for SUs that turn into threads, having one notification for all the replies and one for all the reactions.

Example:

Having two notifications like this:

"6 users replied to a status update"

"5 users reacted to a status update"

Rather than having 11 notifications in this case.

This might be difficult to get to work for a continuous stream of notifications, but maybe it can be used when you open the forum after being a way for a set amount of time.

1 - Give me option to unfollow a notification that i have replied to, i don't want 20 notifications on something i made a comment from other people commenting on it

2 - Give me an option to get notification only if i am mentioned in a reply to a reply i've made instead like facebook.

3 - it's cool if people react to my status OR my reply but could you please club them? like "X amount of people have liked it" or "X,y. and Z have liked your reply" instead of having 10 notification of the same thing

4 - PLEASE specify which post that i am getting notification from, if i comment on something i get a reply say "you have a reply on 'abcdefgh......'s' post" (abcdefgh being the starting text of the post) instead of just saying "Xyz replied to a status update." like yes they replied but did they reply to my status update? to thiers? which update did they reply to? have a little bit of preview

what i am saying is copy facebook

Can we finally get quoting in status updates?

an option right next to status updates that lets you toggle an option which says

1051973634_notifymeofreplies.PNG.5e59b731c05f46c74988d5aadb37acbd.PNG

instead of automatically getting tagged to one , which can be actively enabled or disabled as sometimes members starts to have long conversations which you might not be interested in. You can save close to 30+ status reply notifications per person.

hmm, user default setting on that switch? o_o I'd want to leave that on when i first reply, and selectively turn off for a few

although it's kind of an off (no reply) to on (new reply) to off (stop following) thing, so I'm not sure how complicated would it be to implement ,_,

I reserve the right to change my mind and not change anything at all, for example if it turns out to be a lot of work.

How I feel sometimes when I start a project that turns out to be over my head.

Off the top of my head there are two things I'd love to see.

1) There's no easy way to get to Single Status Update pages unless you're directly involved in the conversation or catch the "reply" button while it's still in the Recent Status Update menu on the main page. I've had reasons to need to get to these pages without being directly involved in the conversation.

2) A means to go back in time to search for Status Updates that are fairly old (3 weeks old, a month old, etc.). Perhaps a page which breaks the list of Status Updates by date or month to make going backwards a lot easier. Currently my only imperfect workaround to this is by manipulating the page URL because going linearly though the list would take forever.
