DNS Error When Changing DNS

Syaoran

Hello,

When I change the DNS on my router to Cloudflare DNS, webpages load slow I get the error DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_BAD_CONFIG at random times. I already tested without using Cloudflare DNS and let my router use the default for a few days and no errors, I then use Cloudflare DNS again the problems start 2 days later. Any idea what's happening?

try a dns flush with the command prompt

I already tried that once before a few weeks back, along with ipconfig release and renew and the problem comes back.

Does this happen with other 3rd party DNS providers such as Google or Quad9 too?

Yeah with Google about a year ago, I haven't used it recently though. I've only ever used Google and Cloudflare, I've never heard of Quad9 until today.

If it happens with all 3rd party DNS, it sounds like your ISP is messing with DNS in some form or another. Probably the only way to get around that is to make use of DNS-over-HTTPS or DNS-over-TLS, with the former masking DNS requests as encrypted web traffic and the latter encrypting the DNS packets.

I was jokingly thinking about this but anyways I've been using google DNS for a few days now and no issues. I would like to use Cloudflare DNS though, what could be the issue then?

It's really hard to say based off the info you've provided, it could be your ISP, it could be ISPs peered with your ISP, it could be bad routes.

Like I said, DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) would work if you want to use Cloudflare. For Windows, the easiest method for system wide DoH configuration currently is

Thanks but that's only for windows, there are phones and game consoles I want to use Cloudflare with. I guess I'll try again adding Cloudflare DNS on my router again.

If you have something like a Raspberry Pi, you could make a simple DNS forwarder that uses the cloudflare daemon to create a tunnel to Cloudflare and then set that as your DNS in your router.

Why do you want to use Cloudflare over Google? Theyre very much similar.

Where are you located? Have you tried pinging 1.1.1.1 to see if their anycast is directing you to a server that is actually near you?
