Windows automatically changes my drive letters and therefore boot order

Hi,

I have both and SSD and a HDD with windows installed but I want to use the SSD for windows and the HDD for storage. However, windows always boots from the HDD even when I change the order in the bios. I tried unplugging the HDD and the SSD is assigned to the letter C and everything works. But I try to use both, windows automatically changes the SSD to the letter D and boots from the HDD. 

Anyone know how to make it so the SSD is always marked C and the other is always D?

You could probably set your boot order in bios

Yes I have tried but every time I do that windows boots from the HDD as it is labelled C and the SSD is labelled D. Even though I have manually changed to boot order.

Are you using any other sata controller or card

no, the SSD is m.2 and the HDD is connected directly to the motherboard

This is very weird. Sounds like a BIOS problem. Does the HDD have a OS on it. That is the only reason I can think of why it would boot to it

Yeah it has windows installed on it. Do I need to wipe it? I have heaps of games installed on it

If your just trying to use the m.2 for windows and the other HDD for storage I don't see why you can't whipe. I am sure there is a way to get this to work without the HDD. 

 

Are the files only games on the HDD. Are they steam games?

Games and their respective launchers, also some programs like Sony Vegas pro. All photos are on the SSD

I have no other idea of how else you can fix this.

Do you have the storage space on the m.2 for all the HDDS fieles. 

If so I would recommend you transfer all the file onto the SSD. You can then use the HDD for just storage and transphere some files back onto it

I only have 30 GB left on the SSD, I have tried to use disk manager to manually swap the letters but it won’t let me change either of them. I think I will just wipe the HDD and reinstall the games overnight. Thanks for your help.
