I kind of understand why they are doing this. It's so incredibly easy to cheat the system, but at the same time it feels like this is not a good way to go about it.

Kinda defeats the purpose of the family plan...... it should be called a household plan then.

 

 A family doesn’t mean that they need to stay in the same roof, they can have their son/daughter studying in another country.....

Even the household plan could be abused. 

 

How would they deal with an apartment block? Where literally hundreds of strangers share the same GPS coordinates?

 

Also what happens if you’re at work or otherwise out of the house when it asks for verification? What if you’re on vacation or a work trip? What if you work on the road? Long haul truckers would get fucked.

Who actually uses Spotify Family Plan at $15 or even at $10 for solo when you can get Youtube Premium Family Plan for $9 a month which includes Play Music for you and upto 5 other.

Those who use Youtube for music are you on Wifi 100% of the time ? Compared to Spotify the bandwidth usage is horrible unless where you live bandwidth is cheap. I average 12 gb per month on youtube over wifi and at 10$ per gb that's very expensive per month.

YouTube Music almost definitely will; it'll search for bootlegged songs too if it doesn't have it in it's library

Youtube Music is different. You get downloads (for both Youtube itself, and the in the Youtube music app. It also doesn't use the Videos, just the audio tracks. You can also watch the videos if you're into that too; just have to flip a switch. 

Google really messed up on their marketing for YT Music, but it's a good platform, and I recommend it.

Spotify has a terrible approach to security (showing all devices on the same network running spotify etc.) and this move doesn't surprise me at all.

I know, but it doens't have everything. I used it for a month. But a lot of music just isn't there. I like listening to liquid funk. There are some albums and vids on it. But not nearly as many as on spotify.

I share the family plan with my ex and some it her friends. And by share I mean they share it and I got the last slot for free, which works fine for me.

I use both Spotify and get YouTube Music with my YouTube Premium membership (I watch a lot of YT on my TV and got fed up of the ads).

 

If Spotify start doing this, they'll just be fuelling a drive to other platforms or a more widescale return to piracy that many of us stopped when streaming apps became popular.

Honestly, this is just a draconian approach to counter a problem that really shouldn't even be a problem. So what if they aren't actual "family" living together, the account is still being paid for. That it's used by people a few km apart or in the same residence, literally shouldn't matter.

Seems less like a family plan and more like a geo-location plan. I don't get the problem. If they're concerned about too many people on the family plan, why not raise the price per member, abolish the plan, or reduce the number of members? You'd think they figured that a group of 6 for $15 was sustainable.

I would have a family plan with my family, despite that we don't all live in the same house, but Spotify sucks and not one of us would be willing to periodically have Spotify and Google know exactly where we live.

 

I mean seriously, if they're concerned about the cost, why not just make it the default $10/month + ~$3 per member? Problem solved.

Same with digital purchases.  I started legalizing my Limewired collection a decade or so ago, using 7digital almost exclusively at first.  If I now go to my library there, I can't even re-download about 10% of my songs because the licenses expired. 

Luckily I have a good amount of backups, so I don't have to worry about this too much. 

 

I too switched to just buying the CDs and ripping them.  I'll only buy digital if there's no other reasonable option.
