Upgrading, opinions if its worth it? (Gaming)

Apm90x

Hi! First poster here and figured id ask for some opinions on rig upgrading,i have the basics in my head about building and all that, but when it comes to "how much impact" something has im kinda lost out there.

My rig is mostly used for gaming and general internet browsing,so no video editing or such. Also i tend to run multiple programs at a time most of the time.

Some example games would be Starcraft II,Resident evil 2 remake,Shadow warrior 2,Planetside 2 etc.

Currently running:

CPU: AMD FX-6350 3.5ghz

GPU: GTX 1060 3gb

RAM: 8gb ddr 3 hyperX 1600mhz

Power: Corsair 650w

Motherboard: Asus m5a78L-M/USB3

SSD: 120gb Kingston (Boot drive only)
HDD: 1TB Seagate 5400rpm

Windows 10 64 bit Pro

Also running 2 monitors (Monitor + TV) At 1080p.

Looking to upgrade to:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 - 3.9 GHz

RAM: 8GB(2x4GB) HyperX Fury DDR4 2400MHz, CL15

Motherboard: ASRock B450M-HDV R4.0

This setup i chose due to budget limitations (This upgrade would cost me 250€ and at this point that is pretty much my limit, reason i did not include Intel chips).

Biggest thing that i am considering is that would this upgrade see much of a boost in gaming? I know for the most part GPU Handles games but the cpu matters aswell, would it be "better" to just run the FX chip untill it finally dies,or would the upgrade see better results in gaming?

Tips, tricks and other suggestions would be greatly apperciated!

It would see way better results.

The FX 6350 by modern standards is absolutely trash and a 2600 is such a massive improvement over it you'll be ashamed you didn't think of it earlier.-

Ryzen 7 3700X / 16GB RAM / Optane SSD / GTX 1650 / Solus Linux

Yeah this is exactly how i feel, while the FX 6350 was alright at the time, today its starting to be rather useless. Thank's for the reply!

Don't get 2400 mhz ram with ryzen - get at least 3000 mhz.  Ryzen benefits greatly from faster ram due to the relation with the infinity fabric, a fundamental part of ryzen's architecture.

Noted and updated my own list! Thanks for the tip.

It would be a good upgrade @Apm90x but that motherboard isn't so great, and neither is the ram as @Epimetheus said.
maybe something like this could be better, with a better quality motherboard and faster ram (plus more quantity too) for under £250

Type Item Price
CPU AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor £109.00 @ Amazon UK
Motherboard ASRock B450M Pro4-F Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard £65.98 @ Amazon UK
Memory Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory £68.96 @ Amazon UK

Agreed - have one, its a GREAT overclocker for a B450 (the Pro4)

The difference will be similar to my experience when I went from FX 8350 to R7 1700....double to triple the frame rates out of my GPU.  Now Im GPU bound.

Will take that into consideration, will have to check if my case is suitable for mATX boards. (older cooler master case).

While these days overclocking is much safer then it used to be,i still have that odd "im gonna break something" on the back of my head so i never wanted to try overclocking, and will probably not be doing so with the ryzen either. But good to know!

Also for RAM - Frequency is king but note - the board only guarantees support of up to 3200mhz, and the chip itself only guarantees up to 2933mhz support.  Anything after that is luck.

my R7 1700's run on 3200 and 3600mhz ram.  RR1 in sig crashes very infrequently due to this.  RR2 crashes around 1 time a night average due to this.  But the FPS yields are huge comparing the frequencies.

Looking at the store page at the moment and it seems like 2600/3000/3200 are the most common ones (Or at least the most bought ones). So the 8/16gb of HyperX Or Vengeance seems to be the safest bet.
