Where were you on September 11, 2001?

Mister Woof

This was before smartphone alerts, constant internet, and instant knowledge.

I was 19, and was working a full time job. I woke up at 5am PST as usual, and after going about my normal routine to get dressed I turned on the TV. It was insane. I remember seeing the second plane hit live on tv. Nobody showed up to work that day, but management didn't care. I never thought something like that could happen. I was a kid during the 93 WTC bombings, but this was the first time I was an adult and able to comprehend something like this scale.

We were on the other side of the country, and nobody knew anyone personally affected, and yet still we were totally floored.

Where were you?

I think I was in New Zealand at the time (my mum was worried we wouldn't be able to get back to the States), but I don't really remember anything, would have been 2 years old at the time.

I have heard my aunt talk about it though, she was in NYC and was a flight attendant at the time so that was really damn personal for her.

Just came back from elementary school when I saw it on the news. The gravity of the situation didn't really faze me at the time so I thought nothing of it. I was a mere child.

Only until a few years into my teens did I understand the global impact of the event.

I was a sophomore at the time.  I remember walking into geography and thinking we were having a movie day.  It was unbelievable.

We did nothing that day but watch TV.

I was in 6th grade. I still remember my homeroom teacher announcing the WTC had been hit by a plane and the subsequent torrent of non-stop news coverage surrounding it.

I also remember being a tad bit annoyed that I missed 2 weeks of afternoon Yu-gi-oh due to something I didn't fully understand at the time.

I was in the 3rd grade. Someone came in and whispered to the teacher and she started crying.

Didn't really understand for a few days.

I was playing rainbow 6, some kid was making 9/11 jokes and asked why I was being quiet.

I said I didn't think it was funny and we got talking. Same sentiment as you. It changed the world.

He said in complete seriousness "Yea but wasn't it like good for airport security?"

I was in Computer Science class in grade 10 - we had TV's in the classrooms with basic cable. Someone ran in and said there was some terrorist bombing or something, so we switched on the TV to the news and watched the world change forever.

I was 4 months in the U.S. Air Force attending tech school. It was a crazy time, we had to be escorted everywhere and couldn't leave base.

Must have been pretty terrifying.

Many people didn't really think at that time war was on the horizon.

I was 10 days off my first birthday so I couldn't say for sure what the hell happened in my case.

All I know is my mom had recently dropped off my older brother at preschool when the first tower was hit. Once that shit had settled and people started figuring out what was going on, they had called school off and my mom ended up picking him up.

This was my recollection of the events, also only being in third grade.

I vaguely remember having to write a paper after the event a few days later about how Sept 11th made us feel, as if 3rd graders could fully comprehend what just happened. And if they needed any proof of that, I clearly remember writing that I was upset that the people who hijacked the plane ruined my mothers birthday (which is September 11th) and how they hadnt yet caught the guys who jumped out of the plane before it hit the buildings.

I just got back from work, turned on the TV about a minute before the 2nd plane hit.

My dad can still point out the tile on which he was standing when he heard that JFK was shot.  Same here, I can point to the exact place where I was standing when I first looked at that TV screen on 9/11.  When the 2nd plane hit, I still vividly remember thinking "oh shit, this is an attack and it's going to change the world".

Looking back on it, I've been lucky.  My teenage years started when the cold war ended, and I was in my early 20s when 9/11 happened.

The 90s really were a good time to grow up, none of the worries that the previous or next generation had/have to deal with.

I was in class with the other 12 years old.

Some were scared for a few days when a plane flew outside, but it died down quick enough for us. We're in Canada. Who would attack Canada.

Waking up for work in the greater Vancouver area...watching the news and thinking that it couldn't be happening. Reality setting in on the drive to work near the Vancouver International Airport seeing planes coming in and not going out. The skies even here on the west coast went quiet.
