Everywhere Storage Server Ideas/Discussion

Ok So, Im basically designing My family A storage server that can be used either at my house, my office, or from just travel, I was thinking about using the UBNT Teleport for the places that will be permanent (eg. My Office), and I am currently looking for solutions for the anywhere access. The Hardware I will be using (which is not the best but ya know, not the worst):

Now that I think about it, id much rather run Unraid, because Id also like to use this as the occasional gaming PC, cause the RX-580 should be able to run games pretty well at low-mid, and I dont really care about gaming quality that much right now just about performance,  I will also be running pulseway in unraid and on the Windows 10 VM, and ubuntu VM (for pihole)

 

My question is, Would the UBNT Teleport be a viable option? also I believe, that pihole should be able to work at my office, if the server is at my house (because of Teleport) or will it not?

So basically you're looking for a self-hosted Google Drive or Dropbox? Put together a nextcloud server and it can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection.

 

Super simple to set-up and extremely user friendly.

Id just run windows on the box, and use hyper-v for vms. That way gaming will just work.

 

Then use storage spaces.

 

Please don't get those ssds, Id go hdd only for storage your network limited, and for ssds get some reasonble quality sata drives with dram.

 

Why the liquid cooler? Mid range air cooler is plently, and cheaper, and more reliable.

 

64gb of ram will be way overkill. THe 1gb per tb in zfs is bs also so ignore that.

 

Id go nextcloud here for simple to use storage.

I would just get a NAS (like Synology or QNAP) can setup your own Cloud storage. It is expandable, probably cheaper than a PC, much smaller and much more energy efficient.

Well all of you guys are true, But several things I disagree on are:
@Electronics Wizardy I chose that specific SSD because I have had great times with them in the past, and simply because I am trying to make something that does not use a crap ton of power, and the server itself isnt going to be dedicated to storage, its also going to be used for Gaming/Editing, and I have had an absolute horrible time with Hyper-V.

@Votivee I don't really like cloud based solutions, simply because they are quite a bit slow, and our home internet plan is only for 1TB/month, and if everyone pulls files from a cloud storage platform, that is used up fairly quickly, that and cloud storage can get quite expensive when you have alot of files

 

@Avus While I tend to agree with you the most, Id have to disagree, simply because Synology/QNAP Nas Boxes do not really offer any expand-ability.

Then id get a single bigger dram based ssd. Those dramless drives will stuggly.

 

What did you do with hyper-v I have had it work very well with good performance. It would probably be much easier to just game on the host and use hyper-v here.

Did you look nextcloud up? It's hosted by you. On your machine. Which means the only way it would get "expensive when you have a lot of files" is if you bought more hard drives.

 

If you are pulling files off of it at your house, you won't use any of your internet plan since it's over your personal network.

 

Unless you're transferring movies outside of your home network every day I highly doubt you would hit that 1TB limit just looking at PDF's and such.
