Threadripper coming: split for low and high end, 8 channel memory

According to a leak, allegedly from an exclusive source for Gamers Nexus, Threadripper is splitting into a low end (if you can call a threadripper processor "low end") and high end.

The document specifies two different CPU classes, sTRX4 and sWRX8, for amount of memory channels afforded to each.

What I find interesting is that the document says the sWRX8 is not overclockable. While I can see an overclockable chip of possible 64 cores or more being a huge power problem, Der8auer has been pushing the EPYC OC angle for quite some time, I'd have thought AMD would come around. As for what socket these may have, I would be surprised if the sWRX8 used the TR4 socket, but up to 32 cores is still expected for next gen on current X399 boards.

I'm positive it will use TR4 because all of the EPYC CPUs were drop in upgrades and just needed firmware updates

Yeah, there's load reduced ram but it's only one memory stick per channel ... artificial limitations so people still buy epyc i guess.

Gonna be interesting to see 96 pci-e 4.0 lanes ... guess motherboards are gonna have loads of repeaters and signal amplifiers.

No. Epyc is a server offering. Threadripper is just an HEDT counterpart based off of the same basic MCM design and modifying the socket.

It's effectively the same but the market segment allows for much more feature rich motherboards. Consumer spaces are likely to see some of those features with this new release

Servers don't need audio I/O or HDMI/DP (most have VGA) and often only have 2 or 3 USB ports etc. While they are just EPYC CPUs with higher TDP for workstation class clocks certain features are likely to be disabled, areas like VM encryption keys.

Epyc is true server offering, but with Threadripper getting similar features than Epyc (I don't remember what they are), where does Eypc belong

Supermicro often makes a workstation variant but are still using the server chipset so the additional workstation niceties are often delivered by extra chipsets added to the board. It's much more 'elegant' to have a proper workstation chipset with these capabilities in it so less chips and 3rd party drivers required. It also lowers the cost which is nothing to complain about.

Also Intel has a large lineup of single socket Xeons on a different socket and chipset that have the extra I/O inbuilt. The dual socket workstations are still the higher end Xeons on the same chipset that require those extra things I mentioned but what AMD is doing is the same as the Intel Xeons on socket H4 (1151)/R4 (2066) etc.

EPYC will still belong in servers.

Octochannel Threadripper is limited to 1 DIMM per channel (2TB RAM cap, instead of 4), will likely be clocked higher (higher TDP and power draw), only support single socket, and likely missing security features in Epyc.

@leadeater  Somehow, AMD is the one to finally make a dedicated space for these parts that makes sense. Though I think it's also a sign that the Rome I/O die has really good yields, so AMD has a space to put the fully functional but maybe not as low-power parts.

Supermicro will still sell you a W8 board if you want one, but for most of us here not that likely. There's only so much cool factor 64 cores goes before "F that price is too high" kicks in lol.

Epyc parts will be drop-in, so one can probably assume that X399 boards could be upgraded for Zen2 4ch parts. However, since they'll be moving to a new chipset naming scheme it might not push the motherboard vendors to update the BIOS.

Since Intel will have to answer to Zen in some shape or form with a new Arch, you can expect both companies going back and forth with high core count + features for years to come.

Lets just hope that a 10 year monopoly like we lived through with Intel will not happen that soon ever again...lack of competition is a killer for innovation.

I'm late to the news. Random thought is that existing X399 mobos wont be able to support 8ch ram due to hardware layout of the traces to ram. A new layout is needed, but not necessarily new chipset. Still, new mobo at least.

 

Anyone dare speculate on timing? When Ian Cutress (Anadtech) pushed Lisa Su at Hot Chips best he got out was she'll talk more this year.
