Motherboard for i9-9900k

Emmpii

I'm looking at motherboards for an i9-9900k.

My set up so far looks like this bar the motherboard

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/7nRT4q

I don't plan on doing a whole lot of overclocking (at the moment anyway) but I would be using my PC for quite a bit of gaming and work and would like it to last me a long time. I've looked around and the advice seems mixed. Should I go for a Aorus master/Maximus XI hero or pay an extra £250 and get a motherboard in the £500 range?

Have you perhaps though of grabbing a 3700x or 3900x? Also if you don’t plan on OC’ing a non K sku will do fine

i'd get a more powerful gpu than the v64, the z390 hero sucks, avoid, master's fine.

It's not something I'm looking to initially anyway. I don't know much about doing it correctly but I'll probably do it once I get the whole set up going.

I've already got the V64. Cost me about 335 off amazon. I literally only have the CPU and Motherboard left to purchase

@Emmpii
I´d go with the Z390 Aorus Master then. Judging by the reviews and test i´ve seen about z390 boards this is a great board in terms of thermals and VRM (especially for the price)
If i remember correctly the Maximus XI hero didnt perform so well in these tests. Take a look for yourself on the HardwareUnboxed Video about z390 performance comparison.

If you want to do some work and want It to last long get a Ryzen 9 3900x. The i9 doesn't even come close in productivity. And you could just get a 200 dollar Asus or Gigabyte x570 motherboard since they're really good and the 3900x consumes less powerful than the 9900k. However, if you're dead set on the 9900k for some unknown reason, then i'd get a High End motherboard since the 9900k runs very hot and requires a lot of power

You will only lose like 10% gaming performance going with the cheaper 3700X and a ~200GBP X570 board

But no, just buy the low-mid range EVGA board.

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

To be honest, I'm not or don't plan to do video editing etc. I work in software so even working with 3d editing won't be an issue. Occasionally I'll be editing images etc so I don't reckon I'd see "a performance drop" in productivity by choosing to go the intel route and maxing out on gaming?

So just get a $200 R5 3600? It's still within like 10-15% for gaming compared to the 9900K

Still there is a lot of performance per dollar right now with AMD and its hard to ignore the Ryzen platform right now.

Looking at the 3900x, I'll probably end up forking out an extra £100.

What motherboards would I be looking at in that case? Ideally I don't want to have to upgrade either CPU or motherboard for a long time

The ASUS Prime is about the minimum

Otherwise something from this list

The 3900x costs the same as an i9 9900k, unless it's out of stock- for the motherboard as stated above the Asus prime x570 is a really good motherboard for it's price, but i'd personally get either a Tuf or an Aorus Elite

IF you go with a 3900x I'd grab a X570 Aurus Elite board.

I've seen the 9900k hit pretty much 400 couple months back. Not sure the 3900x would go that low anytime soon?

for 400 i agree it's a good deal, but it's pretty much never going to go that low

  • 2 weeks later...

Anyone know anything of when the 3900x would be back in stock?

Also I'm guessing the h115i Platinum liquid cooler should work flawlessly with any cpu whether I go for 3900x or 9900k?
