I've always considered Reddit's slogan "the front page of the internet" to be quite over-optimistic, and thinking about it got me curious what you guys think.

I would say there definitely is a front page. Maybe region-dependent, maybe even for each individual person; but whoever you are, there's always something you tend to go to first or interact with the most.

For many people it's probably just Google News, which is shown on phones when using Chrome.

You can hardly call this a true frontpage, since the news it shows you will be personalized

Strictly speaking... There is no front page of the internet as your browser will only take you directly to where you need to go... So, the front page of the internet is actually your Browser, therefore making New Tab the front page of the internet.

My "front page", is a Speed Dial of 20 different websites that I access regularly.

 

But really, IMO, instead of Reddit, to me it would be Google.

The concept of the 'front page' comes from newspapers. Traditionally it is a carefully arranged selection of curated content, often only a snippet or a headline with a tag for where to find the full story. By this definition Reddit certainly fits the bill. It aggregates content from all over the web and community curates and organizes it. 

 

Youtube also fits the bill, though in a different medium being video. I suppose one could argue social media platforms also meet this definition, particularly Facebook which has become mostly commercial content over personal content. However I do not think Google fits this definition, unless it's Google News or something, but even that isn't really curated.

Depends what you consider "frontpage". Google.com has basically nothing. The Google feed or whatever it's called on Android is fairly close to the "front page".

Reddit is the only site(that I'm aware of) that actually describes themselves as the "front page of the internet", so I'd probably agree based solely off that.

 

Reddit also has a massive userbase, and a constantly growing list of subreddits that basically anyone can enjoy. It's probably hands-down the most versatile website around, there really is something for everyone there.

While I tend not to use a single frontpage anymore since I just have my browsers set to resume my previous session, I have a news website set as my default page upon opening a new tab.
