Oh yeah I understand the iterations of Gimp/GIMP/gimp etc but the reality is this - to many people take a shoe that doesn't fit and try to put it on and lace it up to complain about it. 

 

There is LITERALLY a billboard 5 minutes from my house that has the word: RETARDED written on it as a chalkboard with an eraser next to it saying to erase bad language.

 

I laugh every time I see that billboard, its great.

 

EDIT - I will take a pic on the way into work tomorrow if its lit up (its dark when I go in) to show you, if not, over the weekend!

My brother in law is a super tender dude.  Any usage of retard or any form beyond "handicapped" is utterly unacceptable for him, he will literally have a melt down.  He gets to hear that word (and its various forms) from me every time I see him, he needs to toughen up.  My 2 copper coins.  If he didn't like it he could leave, not show up, grow a pair and make me stop, or continue to ask me to stop and get the same response each time which is more over the top usage.

Agreed. I can't take anyone who uses the term "ableist" seriously. Granted when I first heard about GIMP, I knew it was a photo editor but didn't know that it was an acronym. It's still a dumb name, but Glimpse is too.

And Adobe usually gives pretty good deals to schools for Photoshop, which is way better and easier to use than GIMP.

You, I like you. I hate people being offended on other peoples behalf. My brother has a few black friends and they like to go out in public and just say racist jokes and watch everyone else get super uncomfortable and wonder if they should be offended. Kind of like what Zach Anner said when he tells people he wrote a book called "If at birth you don't succeed."

I'm guessing you're unaware of the slang meaning. Whenever I tell non-techie people that I use GIMP, they cringe or assume I'm making a dirty joke. Usually people think of the rapist from Pulp Fiction when they hear "gimp".

 

This is a smart change IMO.
