Zen is the name of the architecture like Intel has "Kaby Lake" "Coffee Lake"

Zen is Ryzen 1000 series

Zen+ is Ryzen 2000 series

Zen 2 is Ryzen 3000 series

I know it may be a bit confusing, I apologize for it [:

Any ways yes your best bet is the Ryzen 5 3600 as there was a very good uplift in single core performance from 2000 series to 3000 series.

I have roughly $150 and im not to sure what CPU I should get the ryzen 5 2600x, or the ryzen 7 2700? I play games like FPS Shooters like csgo and rainbow six siege. I swap resolutions often 16:9 1920x1080 and 4:3 but would like a consistent fps of 250. What is the better buy? What CPU will get me better frames? In csgo I get average of 220 fps around there and siege i get average of 120-190 fps everything low. Thanks in advance!

this is my specs :

cpu : ryzen 5 1600

graphics card : gtx 1070

Mobo :  ASUS Prime X370-Pro

psu : i forgot wich 1 exactly but its like a 700+w

ram : corsair vengence lpx 2x8gb ddr4 3000

monitor: asus 144hz

i am asking which will get me more fps. I currently don't have the funds to buy a new motherboard plus an even more expensive CPU. I have around $150

Then save $50 more for the 3600.

You don't have to buy a new motherboard all you have to do is update the BIOS on your current motherboard.

The single core performance gap between Zen and Zen + is in no way significant enough to spend any money on it.

You should save up for the Zen 2 R5 3600.

I didn't know what you meant by the Zen 2, my mistake, I thought u were talking about a different mobo. My best bet is getting the Ryzen 5 3600? I now realize that Zen is short for Ryzen lol.

Thanks for the explanation, it was my mistake assuming something that if I would have taken a second to read i would have realized. I guess this is what I will do, thanks. One last thing, what kind of FPS gain should I be seeing?
