I can attest to this blocking literally every online-ad: it blocked every LTT-video on Youtube except for three!

EDIT UPDATE: after thinking a little, it blocked the remaining three as well. Working like a dream!

How much will this slow down internet speeds? I have gigabit internet so that's pretty important to me.

I have a question... Is there any drawbacks to using this pihole setup? Cuz I have roughly 50+ devices on my network and I imagine ads take up quite a bit of unnecessary bandwidth and I'm sure everyone involved would appreciate a global auto adblock like this, but... what about the drawbacks? For instance, when I use adblock and adblock plus, certain websites such as... pornhub, lol, as prime example refuses to load most videos until I disable both adblocks and allow the ads to flood in. Would this still be an issue or would there be other similar issues, or is this one of those awesome no flaw forever type of solutions once correctly set up?

I feel like the video only tells half the story which is why I ask.

So you might be wondering "Where do I go from here?"

The next step is to add more blocklists. While the defaults are good, I've been using dbl.oisd.nl for months now and it's amazing.

But what if I want adblocking on the go and not on just my home network?

Well for you my friend, their is PiVPN.

Like they said in the video you can setup a "DIY" VPN and all it takes is one line of code.

The setup is pretty straight-forward, open port a port on your router for it, change the DNS, install OpenVPN on your device, and you're set.

And with a VPN setup to your home network, that opens up a ton of possibilities (watch out for an OpenMediaVault video if they decide to follow up on this)

Speeds aren't affected by DNS at all. In fact, you might notice sites loading faster because they aren't loading the ads.

You'll probably still get that issue. You can whitelist some of those sites, but pi-hole has a toggle to disable it for a few minutes within the admin site.

There is also nextdns.io

It's still in beta for now, but it allows similar functionality, but can work on any device, even outside of your local network.

Does it block the merch ads LTT incorporates into every video? if not then it doesn't block all ads.

It blocks the whole video. /s

The truth is, I want "my favorite sites" that rely (heavily) on ad revenue to survive, in stead of me having to pay a premium for subscription or donation.

How do you feel if everyone blocks the Madrinas Coffee ad on the Forum homepage?

Hey can you make a tutorial video on how to turn a raspberry pi into a VPN because I know thats something else you can do with it, and if you setup a pi to use as a VPN could you run both the ad blocker and the VPN on it? And if I had two raspberry pi's would the setup be any different if I used the second raspberry as a VPN?

This is a great tutorial, thanks very much for putting this together.

I'm going to buy the stuff and give it a try. Quick question, will this have any noticeable slow-down on delivering websites, or should it be negligible? I am going to use a Pi-Zero W, connected via WiFi located next to my router.

Cheers

Is there any way to allow ads on mobile games where you manually select to watch an ad to get in game perks?

Whitelist that game's ad url server. Watch the video...

This is great. So, is there a way I can support LTT directly (other than buying merch), similar to Patreon?

I have it installed, I can access the admin panel. It's reporting that it is blocking ads, however once I turned off adblock, I'm still getting a ton of ads on youtube both on my PC and my mobile device. Do I just need to add more blacklists? It's apparently blocking 25% of traffic. I tried adding the DNS to my router, not sure if I've done that correctly as I'd prefer to not have to manually change device settings. Can anyone provide a fast and dirty set of settings for an actiontech T3200? Thanks!

To me it speed up the internet because no adds get loaded. This is especially true with older devices and phones. I got same ping (12ms) and speed result in Ookla speed test with and without pi-hole.

Only the dns resolution is affected, your connection to the servers stays the same so you will still get the speed you are used to.
