Best way to source parts for discontinued phones?

Lord Letto

Hi, just wondering what the best way would be to get parts for a discontinued phone? I recently got my hands on my sisters old LG Optimus G E973, it needs the front glass & possibly a digitizer after being dropped on pavement years ago when it was about 1 year old causing the screen to break, it still turns on & display shows up OK but not registering touch input, I emailed a bunch of local cell phone repairs today to get a repair quote & only heard back from 2 so far, 1 said " We are currently not able to source the parts for this phone as LG Electronics Canada has stopped manufacturing for these phones." & another place said unable to source parts, so I'm wondering if the parts are no longer being made for a almost 7 year old flagship, what are the odds that there may be some New Old Stock available for it somewhere?

If you can find another phone just like it, you might be able to cannibalize it for parts.

For my low budget (about $75 Canadian currently), it may be one of the better options in my price range, & I already have the phone, just need to get it fixed.

Check this thread for some of my options & tell me if they are any better:

That's another option, I currently have a LG G3 D852 got intermittent screen flickering & fading/glitching/failing to display, random restarts (Lately noticed that it (sometimes?) blue screens when it restarts) & intermittent problems connecting to WiFi/WiFi not turning on, I'm guessing/hoping it's only the motherboard, with cannibalism in mind, there's someone locally that's selling 3 G3 for $70 obo total, 1 apparently works great, 1 needs a battery & another got a smashed screen, if I go that route I could use the one that works & use the other 3 for parts to maybe get 1 or 2 working phones from them, if I go that route it would be the $70 obo for the phones & if I bring them in to a local repair shop it would be a $35 labor fee (not sure yet if that would be total or for each phone), if they can't get any of them to work then it wouldn't cost me anything except what I paid for the phones in the 1st place.

I'm guessing you mean Redmi? If so Looking on eBay.ca here's the options in my budget:

For parts or not working Redmi 2, unknown carrier, untested for $15.59 Canadian + $18.37 Canadian for shipping from the USA: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/MI-REDMI-2-UNKNOWN-CARRIER-CLEAN-ESN-UNTESTED-PLEASE-READ-26008/173870438567

Here's another, though this one is better (used, not For parts or not working), would be $61.10 + $19.48 shipping from the USA (price+shipping would be over my $77.90 budget, but I have a coupon that expires September 12th for $5 off purchases over $10 that would increase my budget to $82.90 if bought off eBay): https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Redmi-2-LTE-Unlocked-Black-White-Clean-ESN/173999023574

looking at "Similar sponsored items", there's the following:

Used Redmi for $56.80+ $19.48 shipping from the USA: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Xiaomi-Redmi-2013022-Unlocked-Grey-Black-Clean-ESN/383114939331

Seller Refurbished Redmi S2, the 2GB+16GB RAM+ROM option with US Plug=$62.56 with free shipping from Hong Kong: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Xiaomi-Redmi-S2-4-7-Unlocked-Smartphone-8GB-16GB-Mobile-Cell-Phone-Dual-Sim/113826886958

New unbranded "clearly knockoff/fake/scam" phone for $68.38 with free shipping from China: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/NEW-Quad-Core-6-0-5-0-inch-4-32G-Android-Smart-Phone-Unlocked-Phone-3G-network/264289605385

Used Redmi 4 for $67.75+$19.48 shipping from the USA, even with $5 coupon would be over budget: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Xiaomi-Redmi-4-2016090-Unlocked-Gold-Clean-ESN/383106571466

New Redmi 7A for $126.18 with free shipping from Hong Kong, doesn't matter as would be over budget: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Xiaomi-Redmi-7A-Global-Version-4G-5-45-2-16-32GB-Octa-Core-Smartphone-Face-ID/183911543900

another new unbranded "clearly knockoff/fake/scam" phone, claims it's a M20 Pro (Huawei Mate 20 Pro?) for $66.51 with free shipping from Hong Kong: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/M20-Pro-4-32g-Face-Fingerprint-Unlocked-5-8-Android-8Core-Dual-SIM-Smartphone/254285286728

other 5 that shows up are out of budget (New Redmi 7A for $126 from Hong Kong, Used Redmi Note 4 ($118.13+$19.48 shipping from the USA), For parts or not working (cracked glass) Redmi 5 ($91.46+$19.48 shipping from the USA), Used Redmi Note 5 Pro ($184.23+$19.48 shipping from the USA) and finally a Used Mi 3 ($74.39+$19.48 shipping from the USA)

Just got a email back from a 3rd place, would be $149+tax to replace the screen on the E973, as for my D852 it sounds like a motherboard issue & they wouldn't be able to repair it & they wouldn't be interested in the other devices, like the second place who couldn't give me a quote & when I mentioned the 3 phones for $70 obo they said "If you had a specific list of parts that you would like replaced they might be able to provide an estimate for the labor if you discussed this with them in person. I will advise that most stores refuse to perform repairs using parts that are not sourced by them as we would not be able to assist with issues that could arise in the future with the replaced parts"

There was also 2 Galaxy S7 phones I asked about, 1 was listed for $50 & needed front glass (cracked around home button) but it's no longer listed, and then there's one that needs front & back glass with no price listed: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-view-details.html?adId=1455302657

From the 3 places I heard back from so far, prices would be:

1) The cost to replace a screen on this device is $219+tax. To replace the back glass is $95+tax. We will give you 50% off on the back glass if you do the screen replacement.

2) $209.99 plus tax for the screen replacement on a Galaxy S7 and $79.99 plus tax for a back glass replacement on a Galaxy S7. These prices include the costs for parts, labor, and a 90-day warranty for the repairs

3) The Samsung S7 is $219 +HST(screen) and additional $70+ HST(back door)

For reference, I can get a Galaxy S7 from a local store for $219+ tax & comes with a 30 day warranty: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cell-phone/kitchener-waterloo/factory-unlocked-samsung-s8-s7-edge-a5-s5-neo-note-5-s4-j3/1455135050
