Navi 21/23 Cards Rumored (aka "Nvidia Killers" xD)

It looks like AMD has stolen the throne from Intel in the consumer CPU market right now (at least for the next few months), but will they succeed in doing so against Nvidia as well?

In short, rumor has it that four upcoming AMD consumer graphics cards ~ assuming the RX 5800, 5800XT, 5900, and 5900XT ~ will sport the following 4 versions of Navi respectively:

  • Navi 12 (48 CUs) = around 20% more performance than the RX 5700XT
  • Navi 14 (56 CUs) = around 40% more performance than the RX 5700XT
  • Navi 21 (84 CUs) = around 2.1x the performance than the RX 5700XT
  • Navi 23 (92 CUs) = around 2.3x performance than the RX 5700XT

 

And if the numbers match the predicted performance scaling (.225 TFLOPS/CU FP32 @ 1755Mhz) then.........AMD scores!

 

That is, if they can release these before next year's GTX/RTX family ;)

 

 

P.S. Please take the numbers above with a meal of salt; they are estimates. Also, I couldn't find an existing thread discussing Navi 21/23 or "Nvidia Killer", but if there is please feel free to lock this one.

Those CU numbers would be super nuts, especially given that it seems their entire strategy is based around smaller dies with fantastic yields (at least on the CPU side). I doubt these are true.

It’s a Vega Pro II Duo. Nobody has them yet as the Mac Pro is still MIA. It might go on sale on September 10th.

It does as an option.  It is a Vega II Duo, so not Navi.

I'll believe it when I see it but so far AMD doesn't seem to have a RT or Tensor core equivalent and I doubt they'll have one when these cards come out.

RT cores are completely useless tho.

RT doesn't matter for most folks.  Once you're on the high end, you won't be running RT anyway for 2k or 4k gaming, as you want more fps to make the high refresh rate monitors worth it and have a better experience.  If RTX could run on AAA titles while still pushing 120+fps at 4k, then more people might care.  But until then, it is useless on low end cards and only works well for mid range stuff at 2k when using a high end card.

I disagree, sure they could use more support (which is slowly getting here) but the stuff that makes use of them is really cool. For instance I can't wait until Blender (Cycles) officially supports it (technically it's already supported but I'd either need to compile it myself or use an alpha version). Also it was pretty nice to use from the programmer side of things too since I could rely on the API to do most of my work for me (so far I've only written a simple cpu ray tracer about 2 years ago and a vulkan ray tracer that used rtx several months ago).

My guess is that the 5900/XT would be the navi version of the Vega pro duo.

 

Very attractive rumours except that the previous ryzen rumours months ago weren't accurate either.

As for whether the cards are an "nvidia killer" I'll believe it when I see it,AMD needs to hold back on being cocky until they actually have a high end GPU.

A few 3D modelling software now uses RT cores, for example in Substance Painter on a GTX 1080 it would take 60 seconds to bake an ambient occlusion map. On the RTX 2060 it will only take 1 second. Blender will use RT cores to accelerate Cycle render. Unreal Engine and Unity will soon follow for lightmap baking / realtime.

Yeah GTAV and Red Dead Redemption 2 didn't make that much money at all. Very niche.

Yeah, the game devs use the same GPU's as consumers do, they also have to test those games somehow lol.

People can keep finding reasons as to how they think RT is "useless" or "niche" but when you can use the RT cores to process to process a rendering in a fraction of the time it would take without the RT cores is quite a useful feature IMO. And the funny thing is AMD patented their own ray tracing tech.
