They can easily track you outside of what your IP is so using a VPN is a step in the right direction but you need a lot more to be semi protected

Most of us are not concerned about privacy while browsing a site. Many of us want to give a lot of information to make sites like this one actually work, but we ARE concerned about cross-site tracking, fingerprinting, etc.
 
I've become really fond of the following combination that's a little less extreme, but still makes it massively difficult to track you.
 
1) Use Firefox - It's an open browser and, unlike Google and Microsoft, has no interest in tracking you what-so-ever.
2) In Firefox, go to Settings -> Privacy and security -> Content Blocking -> Custom and check tracking, cookies, cryptominers, and fingerprinters.
3) Fingerprinting is particularly important. Many sites ask your browser about all sorts of things that will make it appear unique, and uses that. With this blocknig enabled, Firefox refuses or downright lies about this information, making it impossible to track you this way.
4) While the cookie blocking is nice, it's not enough, because first party cookies are now used to track you. So, install the following extensions:
a) Cookie Autodelete - deletes cookies every time you LEAVE a site. Cookies still work while on it, but as soon as you leave - poof, it's gone.
b) HTTPS everywhere - makes you not send stuff over HTTP when you can help it
c) I don't care about cookies - Prevents the completely useless EU cookies warnings from showing up. Now that you delete cookies, they will ask you every time, ironically.
5) Get KeePass and install Kee for the browser. Kee encrypts all your passwords, which is going to be important since you're going to be logged out every time you leave a site, but crucially it saves the data on your local machine, meaning that no company, such as LastPass, is decrypting your passwords for you. You can encrypt the database with a certificate or password. I recommend a certificate. You can then upload the database, BUT NOT THE CERTIFICATE, to a service like Dropbox or a WebDAV or FTP or similar, because with these you download the entire database each time and decrypt your passwords locally.
6) Use Linux or macOS. Seriously, Windows is FULL of spyware and adware by default. If you're running Windows, you are not safe by definition, period. Microsoft has made sure of that. Apple is much better in this regard, and Linux is the ultimate.
7) Listen to the advice of the Free Software Foundation (or FSF) if you wanna go completely dark. These guys are really, really, REALLY extreme, but they are also completely correct. They're fundamentalists, but also fundamentally correct.

Great vid. Glad "Buttercup" mentioned Tails and TOR, and since this is a -BASIC- Guide, I'd love to see a more "My name is Zero Cool and this is my story" video in the future. Just wish more of a plug for PIA was in there. PIA is one of the ONLY VPNS that have a proven track record (in court) to not have any logs whatsoever. Even for being based in a 5-eyes company, that's saying a lot.

It's up to you to decide whether you care about lots of companies having your data. Companies share their data with each other and sell it to each other, including to political parties and government, and all the groups that collect data compile the data they get about you into a personal profile of yourself. If you're OK with companies and individuals at those companies, with government, with researchers, and with other entities having a comprehensive virtual profile on you that could be use in ways you like or don't like today and all the more in the future as the profiles on you become more comprehensive, then your personal decision on the matter is just as fine as someone's who doesn't feel the same way.

The thing is in this day and age going untracked on the web is becoming more and more tricky. Even with a VPN those cookies on your machine phone home and identify you. If you truly want a chance at going untracked then you need to do several things.


Clean out all cookies and browser data.

Get a good VPN that doesn't save data

Get a decent sinkhole like Pihole

Get Firefox or Tor (if you want to go even more extreme)

Then install an addon for firefox like no script.

Setup firefox to not keep any data and to not allow cookies

 

Now you have a good chance of not being tracked, but you need to make sure you are vigilant and do not allow cookies. Pi-Hole when properly configured is an extra later to block unwanted stuff coming in and more importantly stop it from phoning home. Normally this is more than the average user wants to do and TBH it is pretty much overkill anyways for most people. The data being gather doesn't actually give out any PII... it is just a metric attached to a cookie to help them provide more relevant ads (more money for them) or sell your usage data (more money). They aren't tracking your name, address, SSN, etc... That doesn't mean they couldn't if they truly wanted, but there is plenty of legal boundaries that mostly protects you there.

I can't imagine a scenario that so many browser history data points get leaked without more serious information getting leaked too. Browser history is the least important thing that gets leaked when a website is hacked. I don't see how if websites didn't track you, that data leaks would be less harmful.

Because they value privacy, security, and control over their person, and are aware of the ways their information can be misused. Also because they might realize that intimate examination and exploitation of one's own life is something that should require permission from oneself, and not be an automatic entitlement of 3rd parties while access to see what the 3rd parties have on oneself requires their permission.

 

I think the question of 'why would somebody be OK with it?' is the one that requires a lot more explaining.

Great video, although CBC Marketplace covered online shopping & vacation booking a while back. Personally, I don't use a VPN or Tor only because using either is completely pointless if you are logged into your Google or Facebook account anyway, but I do run uBlock Origin out the wazoo because 1) ads can be malicious, 2) ads slow down the internet, and 3) ads use up my data plan.

In addition to using Tails OS, use of Mac spoofing and public wifi points (or open/broken residential access points, not that I condone crime of course), preferably outside the view of any security camera, could prove quite formidable, even if TOR and the VPN happen fo fail.

 

If sending highly sensitive data is required, I'm going to encrypt it offline before anything else. Veracryps exists, but 7-Zip also does a good job and is less obvious.

 

Again, not foolproof because PEBKAC, but a couple additional steps to make life difficult for any would-be masochists spies.
