nvidia 436.02 drivers, draws inspiration from AMD, Intel

Integer scaling is a feature Intel have been talking about, and will be introduced in their next gen iGPUs. So with this driver, nvidia are jumping ahead of them in this. This feature could be beneficial for older games where sharp pixel scaling is preferred over the blurry version we typically get.

 

Nvidia's new sharpening filter is likely a response to AMD's reveal with the Navi cards. Apparently there was already a sharpening option in the Freestyle function of the drivers, but the new filter is lower performance impact. Think I'll wait for the usual sites to do both image quality and performance comparisons before drawing any conclusions on this one.

 

And finally there is an Low Latency Mode going against AMD's Anti-Lag. According to Anandtech, this isn't necessarily a new feature, but a rebranded one to make it more obvious as to what it does. Again, I'll leave it to other sites to test these functions against each other.

Generally a bad idea. Keeping your drivers "up to date" for folding purposes only is generally not wise as often these optimizations only benefit games, while having the sometimes opposite affect on compute/folding systems.

The test to watch out for is when they try this new driver function against that. I wasn't keen on the example during the navi reveal as it looked over processed like someone just found the sharpen filter in photoshop for the first time and turned it up to 11.

To me they're doing different things, even if they overlap in use case. You could have DLSS+sharpening.

The "Freestyle" thing is absolutely worthless. Any game I've tried it wasn't supported. Not to mention you need to use stupid NVIDIA Experience app... Would much prefer if sharpening was integral part of drivers, like we used to have "Sharpness" slider next to color, contrast and saturation sliders.

 

And the low latency mode, I alway sforget to set the prerendered frames thing. Maybe I won't now that they'll call it something else...

Yes it could be so, it's just funny that they tried so hard to push DLSS and after the AMD's Sharpening produced better results both on performance and graphically than it on Metro Exodus which has the best implementation of DLSS one can only wonder what went wrong...

While the low-latency thing is neat, I was a lot more hyped about the supposed performance increase in FH4. And for once I think they actually pulled it off. Between the low-latency dealio and whatever they did for FH4, I definitely noticed that it had far less frame pacing issues and it stuck to 60FPS the entire time (normally it'd drop to the mid-high 50s seemingly at random).

I'm folding sometimes and any nvdia driver I've tried with my Ryzen 3000 series CPU keeps causing BSOD.

To me DLSS is more about trying to give the missing detail while upscaling, whereas sharpening is about visually enhancing whatever detail is there.

 

I see echos of my digital photography days here, it's rather easy to create punchy images by increasing contrast (sharpening may be in form of local contrast enhancement) but beyond a point it becomes unnatural. That's how I saw the samples in the navi reveal and backing off improve it to me. Similar tricks can be done with saturation, or vibrancy. When you then compare a "natural" looking image, it struggles to stand out amongst the more heavily processed images.
