8 Cores + 32GB RAM vs 12 Cores + 16GB RAM

I'm almost done building a list of parts for my pc upgrade in December (Will update parts if prices change and parts release within budget).

The final decision is between getting 16GB DDR4 3600Mhz and an R9 3900X or getting 32GB DDR4 3600Mhz and an R7 3700X.

Both end up costing almost identical prices but I'm not sure that would benefit me more? I use my pc for a lot of content production and also gaming.

Below are the programs I use and corresponding RAM usage if applicable (Currently have 16GB DDR3 1600Mhz 7-7-7-21.

FL Studio 12 Pro: ~7000MB

Minecraft (Modded): ~12000MB

After Effects: 15500MB (This is my main concern)

Misc Games + SLOBS: ~12500MB

Either option would be a massive increase over my Haswell Xeon and better than the slow 16GB that I use right now.

I'm not really interested in anything that intel has provided as options, mainly because of the lack of HT but also cost differences here in Australia.

32 would be very beneficial but it's more expensive to buy a completely new CPU than to just add more ram.

So just buy 2x8GB for now and add 2x8GB later.

That's what most people do.

Still in school but in December holidays, I get a few weeks of work installing Windows 10 on around 500 Surface laptops. Would be about $1400 but ill try and get more days to save for the extra RAM.

what are you using for a Haswell Xeon? If you're using 1150 those only go to quad core, but X99 is Haswell and you can get desktop E5s for X99 that have 18 cores.

Sorry about my spelling sometimes. My $1200 laptop has a $2 keyboard.

Oh damn son. Not even $3 a laptop? I’d definitely be asking a 5’er a laptop. If that’s the case go go with 3900/16 now and upgrade to 32 down the line.

Xeon E3-1231 V3

I used to have an Intel Pentium G3258 at 5.2Ghz but it died after a few years so I got the Xeon for cheap. I used to use a Z97 board but now I have to use a B85 because I broke some pins in the socket by accident.

Paid minimum wage in Australia for 17 yr olds which is $9.75/hr. Idc though because I just sit and watch YouTube, just have to get the laptops to a stage where the deployment server takes over ?

fixing pins isnt too hard unless you like, depressed half the socket with your thumb.

I build an X99 rig with a Xeon E5 1650 v2 and a GTX 1080 for under $1000US, which is 1475AUD. The E5 2670 v3 is only $100US and is $75US if you like Japan enough. That's 12 cores, 24 threads and a lot of video rendering! So, if you sell some stuff you can get X99. I don't like new stuff because it's expensive as shit and old WS/Server stuff is a lot cheaper and often performs the same, or even outperform it. I've had my old E5 1650 v2 match an i7 8700 and it's only $100US.

Sorry about my spelling sometimes. My $1200 laptop has a $2 keyboard.

Depends on the project if you are comfortable with 16gb, 32gb won't have any major difference.

For editing core count is better, if you're not in a rush, 8 core is fast enough. 12 cores would give you 20-30% faster rendering.

But on the other side, Ram prices are very low right now, grab as many as possible before it went up again.

Dilemma...

you know, adding 16gb in the future is not a problem, but you can't solder 2 more cores after some time... so I would go for more cores, fewer ram, and add it in the future. Also for powerusing and gaming 16gb is fineee. :)
