Do you have any DVD movies you wish to watch on your PC?

What is your data backup plan?

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

If you already have it, why get rid of it? I find that they still come in handy occasionally

I don’t intend on putting much data on it as it is more for my first time building a PC and I don’t intend on watching any DVDs on it plus It is internal and would rather have and external one for more space in my case

I bought an external USB 3 caddy and keep it to one side, just in case. I do have a blu-ray in my PC which gets reasonable use.

I wouldn't. Optical disks are horrible compared to usb. If you ever really need to get something off disk you can usually find a library or similar to copy data to usb.

If you're interested in a product please download and read the manual first.

Don't forget to tag or quote in your reply if you want me to know you've answered or have another question.

But this is an old spec rig so all gaming is gonna have to be off of an optical disk

I'd say grab a USB to SATA kit and be running it externally.

I use an external disc drive for ripping physical music CDs I buy, and when I buy older games on disc that still work on modern hardware.

It's barely used TBH but handy to have a drive if/when I need it, oh and you never know tech stuff you'll have to do for the family, where a DVD drive is required (At least in my family).

Laptop: Asus TUF Gaming F15

Retro Tech stuff.

I have one computer with a DVD drive.  I use it to rip blu rays.

So why waste our time asking if you have to have it?

If you don't think you're going to use it can just get rid of it and find a cheap USB one if it turns out you're in need of one. Not having one opens up a lot more options in the case space

I built a PC in 2012 and just ditched it for a AMD 3700x based system. I never once had any optical drive in it. However when I needed to get content off a DVD I simply used my dad's PC and transferred the needed files to my PC over LAN.

With every post it becomes more apparent that only you can decide if you should hang onto it.

Obviously, most libraries won't let you load up MakeMKV on their systems for ripping Blu Rays. For that matter, most library PCs do not have Blu Ray drives either.

Sometimes, I'll burn CD-RWs for the car stereo as well, though the availability of portable tools (for encoding) makes it feasible to use library and work PCs for this purpose.
