Jumping Ship from Mac to PC - Hold my Hand Please!

Hi All,

 

I can honestly say that the sole purpose I now have this innate desire to build a PC is from watching LTT videos as often as they are released for a few months now since stumbling on them. However, being of a younger generation (born in the late 80's), I have been indoctrinated with Mac's as that's been the only type of computer in my household and has spilled into the family business where they are used exclusively for custom cabinetry designing and so on.

 

So, I've attempted to put together some parts lists, but I figured I could probably get a good jump start from here. Here's the criteria and potential uses.

 

Budget: $800-$1,200 CAD (not including peripherals)

Primary Use: Gaming (new to PC gaming as well, I haven't gamed on a computer in probably 10 years. Mostly played RTS from Blizzard, bit of Diablo, COD way back in the day)

Secondary Uses: Hobbyist 3D (architectural mainly, played with sketchup a bit) - potential for CAD type software for building custom cabinetry systems - eventually learning how to port that into our CNC as a hobby. As well as web browsing, content consumption via Netflix and Youtube, etc.

Hardware question: Do I need to buy something separate if I wanted wifi and Bluetooth? Thinking wireless for peripherals as this set-up will be in my garage/workshop where I'll be doing a pivot Vesa mount off the wall so I can move the monitor around away from the desk when I need it for other things.

 

So I'm hoping other people here smarter than me can give me a list to start on for a build? I've been thinking AMD, I don't know if the newest chips are necessary, I've read enough about the 3600 ones to see bits about having issues with x470 motherboards (way out of my league attempting to address these types of things!), is having the newest ones worthwhile bang for buck? Or would I be better off with the next newest gen of chips?

 

Side note: It may be tacky, but honestly I wouldn't mind a little RGB in my life, that's about as wild as I get these days!

 

Keep in mind I have NEVER built a PC before, am drowning in Apple products like no ones business, so with that, any help would be appreciated! :)

X570 boards are a bit pricey but they'll come in handy if you every upgrade to a new Ryzen CPU, plus PCIe 4.0's nice

I wouldn't buy a RX 5700 XT yet because the thermals on the stock reference card is literal fire, if you're going to do some heavy workloads then stay away.

 

 

I noticed that nobody actually included a wireless network card, so I put one in. This Gigabyte adapter should be able to handle Bluetooth 4.2 as well so your wireless peripherals should work fine. (You technically can get a cheap bluetooth USB stick but those are cheap and probably will not last long, and they use up a USB port)

I already picked a board with wifi. The phantom gaming 4 has a crappy VRM and the m12ii is ancient.

I do think a $150 X570 board will be better then a B450M board, even with a "crappy VRM". What do you mean by "m12ii"?

 

Also a separate PCI network card is going have better speeds, and my one supports bluetooth.

it's crappy for the price. the X570-P would be a better choice. not that it would matter much anyways when a half decent B450 board is more than enough for a 3600.

Was it the 450 boards that had issues with the new 3 series? I don’t have other pcs other than apple products so I don’t know if I’m equipped to do the tinkering to make them work. There’s a 450 max or something now that’s supposed to have fixed that isn’t there?

B450 boards need a bios update first before you can use zen 2 CPUs, the B450M/AC is an exception and the MSI MAX boards already havr updated BIOSes.

Equivalent Nvidia GPU perhaps? Just read a lot about how hot and noisy the 5700 is. My PC will be in a warmer garage in the summer so I don't want any cooling issues.

have a look at 2060 or 2070

 

or if u dont mind second hand look around for a 1080/ti

How does this look? Will I have any issues with physical space in the case? Anything that is overkill or bottleneck?

Dunno why you're getting an M-itx board with a m-atx case. Get the B450M/AC if you really want wifi.

Okay thanks for the help. I got kind of lost looking at boards, I just want to avoid the bios flash issue as I only have access to apple computers typically. Is there one you’d suggest that has wifi and bluetooth?

the board i mentioned already has wifi and bluetooth and doesn't need BIOS updates.
