GPU Artifacting - certain applications crash. Need some help!

Hey guys!

So recently.. somehow, and for some unknown reason my GPU started to "crash".

First I noticed it in PUBG - once again it is a new issue, maybe a week old? Everything was fine before..

As soon as I'd see the lobby and load into a game - my Sapphire R9 290X OC "crashes" and I get a notification from the RADEON panel saying that "WattMan settings are reset to defauls due to an unexpected system failure".

Before the crash, I see a slight line across the middle - freeze - crash - bug report and that message. I ran 3D Mark Fire Strike, the first "fight" scene went OK. Then the GPU Test 1 - the flyby started, and it did the same, quit the application and everything resumed the same.. so I dont quite understand what started to happen.

Can anyone help?

I'm streaming every day, many AAA games, to entertain people and to get a hang of games that others are unable to play or want to see before they buy.

What is your full system spec?

Did you recently upgrade/change anything?

Have you reinstalled your video driver via DDU?

Hey man,

Okay - so full system spec is the following;

i7-4790K watercooled with Corsair H80i

8GB DDR3 RAM

650W Gold Rated PSU

ASRock Z97 Extreme 4 Mobo.

These components were hand - picked and they are a bit out of date but I had no issue running everything on ultra or almost ultra, inc BF V, BF1 and Metro Exodus just a while ago.

I deleted all the garbage with DDU - and installed the latest driver for the R9 290 Series cards from AMD's website. I think (??) I recently updated to the latest driver.. now I am not sure if the newest driver is the issue, or something suddenly started to give in.

Try an older driver then. If it doesn't work, start thinking about a new card.

Well.. it really should not give in all of a sudden though I dont think.. or is this a sign of the end times? :(

Also - can you show me where I could get reliable "old" AMD GPU drivers? I had no luck on the AMD site.. I can be blind at times however.

Artifacting is usually either software or dead memory chips.

Ah fuck me. Such a beastly card still - would be such a pity to replace this. I wanted to keep this system for like a year or 2 more, then completely rebuild to current gen and sell it or whatnot.

Try the driver first, though.

Hey dude - went back to it, and PUBG loaded into the game without crashing.. so maybe theres some sort of a fix. I'll test it later, thanks for the tip tho!

Okay.. nevermind. Still does it. It seems to be a weird situational thing.. not every other app. Idk. Baffled. Is there a way to check GPU health? Any further tips?

Nope - the card is probably done for if the ones I gave you aren't working either.

Okay.. so should I look at 2nd hand stuff that was the same? I mean when I got it a 780 Ti, a 970 and 980 were the same range as this card.. just not sure where to look or begin. :(

What's your budget? A RX 580 performs better and Costa about 160$

Well, no more than say.. 300 GBP.

I know, but they are not "too good" either, I heard mixed reviews. I need to make sure it will still sit in my PC, as mine was built 4 years ago. That includes PCI-E slots and whatnot you know. This is beyond my expertise tho.

In that case, 1660 To or RX 590 and you are golden. Whichever is cheaper. And have no fear, the 580/90 are fantastic cards for the money.

Hmm, I see. I just know that this R9 290X would probably have served another 2 years for my high gaming needs if it didn;t start to cough up it's lungs now sadly.

Are 2nd hand GPUs a big risk?

Depends on how much you want a warranty. They are certainly a bigger gamble than new. I personally wouldnt spend over a hundred pounds on a used card. The 980/1060/480 all perform around the same as your old 290X.

Hmm, okay. I'll have a browse and see what I can find. They'd all fit as well I presume?

Unless you have a super small car, I wouldn't worry.

£150 for this - and it's new, 8GB card and benchmarks are rather good for it. It's stable 60FPS for sure on high settings on new games for 1080p which is all I need.

I'll have to find out if this is easy to install and put into my system just.. do you think you could double-check based on the Mobo I supplied? ASRock Extreme 4 Z97.

Or even something a bit beefier for 50 pound extra? https://www.overclockers.co.uk/sapphire-radeon-rx-590-nitro-8192mb-gddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-38r-sp.html

Yes. DDU the drivers you have installed. Turn the PC off. Pull the card out, insert the 570. Install drivers. Done.

One quick question.. what is the difference between these two cards?

The blue is the "special" edition.. but I see no difference in the performance - or am I blind
