WordPress/Automattic Buys Tumblr For A Lot Less Than Verizon/Yahoo Paid For It.

Tumblr will not die. And it seems it found a new home under Automattic/WordPress.

Verizon agreed to sell Tumblr to Automattic for the alleged sum of less than 20 Million Dollars, some say even less than 10 million. This comes years later after Yahoo/Verizon bought Tumblr for over 1 Billion Dollars.

Guess the porn on Tumblr was really worth a lot. At least we know with certainty why Tumblr was so popular. ?

The big picture: Tumblr, while unprofitable, hosts more than 450 million blogs and was once considered a major player in the social media space. The network was acquired by Yahoo for $1.1 billion in 2013, before moving under Verizon's umbrella through the carrier's acquisition of Yahoo in 2017. Verizon's desire to sell Tumblr had been previously known, but as of May, Pornhub had been the only bidder to show public interest.

Automattic Inc. will buy the network and take on its 200 employees.

At most, 20 million smackeroos.

They literally paid 2% or, probably less of what Yahoo paid for Tumblr. Holy fuck was that a bad purchase from Yahoo's end.

Hopefully they can restore it to what it was, a pretty good porn site with some social aspects glued on

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

She didn’t do a great job, but to be fair Yahoo was also already a sinking ship when she came in. The CEO’s prior made much worse decisions than her.

 

And agreed, the Alibaba investment was the only good decision they ever made.

Microsoft offered a ~25% premium on its stock to buy Yahoo! a number of years ago. When they rejected that offer, I knew the writing was on the wall. When consensus is that MS can run your operations better than you can, it's pretty much all over.

Yeah don’t get me wrong, every large tech company has made some poor acquisitions. But Yahoo seemed to make only bad acquisitions, I don’t think anything they acquired was ever a success.

Microsoft offered $44.6b for Yahoo in 2008. In 2017 Verizon bought them for $4.48b.

And Verizon pretty much only bought their other assets. The core of Yahoo is considered almost worthless.
