why you SHOULDN'T buy a Seasonic Focus (Plus) (Gold/Platinum)

It's fine. Late 2019 and later, the Earthwatts Gold Pro should be using the new GX which completely fixes the old problem. The only thing wrong with the EA Gold Pro is the OPP is set too high, if I recall correctly, which is why on the Tier List, it's tier A low priority.

(This also counts for focus based PSUs like Antec Earthwatts and Asus Strix, with the exception of the nzxt-e and the new Focus GM, GX, PX and SGX lines (it meets 2.52 atx, which require hardware changes))

The Seasonic Focus line has been suffering major criticism on the PSU subforum lately. Why?

Old revisions (2017-2018) will shut off on some GPUs (970, 1080 ti, vega 64, Vega VII, 2080 ti). it'll will trigger the overcurrent protection, and will shut down immediately. This is likely due to the high transients the GPUs are known to put out

New revisions (2018-2019) have a bigger headroom, but aren't built for it and start to ripple at the loads where the PSU would shut down at with the older revision.

If you plan on buying one, either wait for the v2, or choose a different PSUs, for this you can check the PSU tier list, or ask around on the forum.

With that is focus known to be quite loud under load, has a staggering 200% opp on the 3.3v rail, but this isn't as concerning as the above mentioned problems.

edit: the 2019 based Focus GX/GM/PX have fixed mentioned issues

no worries, 1660s doesn't nearly have the transients to trip a focus v1, if you even get one of those since the chance is very minor

Well guess who just ordered a focus gx-650 on Amazon.. I bought it for my upcoming RTX 3070 upgrade I've got an i7 9700F that I'll pair it with it. I'm upgrading from a 500w bronze ibuypower power supply. Is it worth it to cancel it, and order something else if I can?

So the Antec EAG Pro 750 I bought is based on the first generation of Focus Gold PSU most probably, the cables don't have any capacitors and the Antec website mentions ATX 2.42 compliant. Will this be an issue, I might add a 2060 super like card in the future

It's renewed version. Regardless, if you don't plan to use it with AMD Vega or nVidia RTX3080/3090 then even old revision is okay.

We don't know for sure but there were no reports of new Focus shutting down with RTX3080/3090, only with Prime.

I have just received an Antec Earthwatts Gold Pro 750W to be used for my upcoming 3080. Based on the serial # it appears to be a 2019 unit. How can I test it with my GPU to definitively know if it has the defects described in the original topic? Just run it at 100% for a half hour and see if it crashes? Is there any risk of damaging components if it is faulty and I continue to use it until I get a new one?

Hello!

You said to wait for v2 of Focus Plus Gold... Is that Focus GX or there is something like Focus Plus Gold v2?

What does it mean to me as a user?

Will it damage my components?

I got rid of my GX 750 watt and bought a Corsair 850 RMX. I no longer have black screens with my 2070. Or it could of been my icue software causing black screens.

iCue has some serious issues. On my laptop it prevents the laptop from using the intel hd gpu. As a result laptop always uses the 1060 and heats up.

Would the FOCUS GX-650 (SSR-650FX) fall in line with the exclusions?

I'm a large dumb dumb.
