why you SHOULDN'T buy a Seasonic Focus (Plus) (Gold/Platinum)

Do Seasonic fix their fan profile? Some of their psus seem to make horrible grinding noise at low rpm.

(This also counts for focus based PSUs like Antec Earthwatts and Asus Strix, with the exception of the nzxt-e and the new Focus GM, GX, PX and SGX lines (it meets 2.52 atx, which require hardware changes))

The Seasonic Focus line has been suffering major criticism on the PSU subforum lately. Why?

Old revisions (2017-2018) will shut off on some GPUs (970, 1080 ti, vega 64, Vega VII, 2080 ti). it'll will trigger the overcurrent protection, and will shut down immediately. This is likely due to the high transients the GPUs are known to put out

New revisions (2018-2019) have a bigger headroom, but aren't built for it and start to ripple at the loads where the PSU would shut down at with the older revision.

If you plan on buying one, either wait for the v2, or choose a different PSUs, for this you can check the PSU tier list, or ask around on the forum.

With that is focus known to be quite loud under load, has a staggering 200% opp on the 3.3v rail, but this isn't as concerning as the above mentioned problems.

edit: the 2019 based Focus GX/GM/PX have fixed mentioned issues

Well guess who just ordered a focus gx-650 on Amazon.. I bought it for my upcoming RTX 3070 upgrade I've got an i7 9700F that I'll pair it with it. I'm upgrading from a 500w bronze ibuypower power supply. Is it worth it to cancel it, and order something else if I can?

So the Antec EAG Pro 750 I bought is based on the first generation of Focus Gold PSU most probably, the cables don't have any capacitors and the Antec website mentions ATX 2.42 compliant. Will this be an issue, I might add a 2060 super like card in the future

Just got confirmation from Seasonic that the newer Antec EAG's are based on the Focus GM Platform.

i buy 8 days ago this PSU

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07W4PLZWH/ref=twister_B08JH24931?_encoding=UTF8&th=1

directly sold by and ship by amazon.com

Style: FOCUS PX ('20) | Pattern Name: Power | Size: 750W |

so my question is this PSU is good ? is no the old version ? , when the bog arrived i can see the date of manufactured of the PSU ?

  • COMPACT SIZE: 140 MM deep fits ALL ATX systems.
  • FULL MODULAR: Use only the cables you need to reduce clutter to maximize airflow for a better ventilated system.
  • 80 PLUS PLATINUM: Less energy gets wasted during power conversion; Cut down your electricity usage and be Eco-Friendly.
  • PREMIUM HYBRID FAN CONTROL: Unsurpassed silent performance in Fanless Mode. The fan control button at the back of the power supply allows users to customize cooling needs by selecting between Seasonic S2FC (fan control without Fanless Mode) and S3FC (fan control including Fanless Mode).
  • 10 YEAR WORRY-FREE WARRANTY: Our commitment to superior quality.
  • Model number is Focus PX-750. Safety model name is SSR-750PX

this PSU is good beacuse is small and fit perfect for my factral defince C and in order to use the both HDD bay i need small PSU for easy cable management or i can choice the evga G3 is better than the G5 , but the cable of the G3 are meshy and in cable capasitator can be dificulty for cable m. , no to mention the other problem with the power protection carry the g3 me personal i have G3 since 2017 and until now i have zero problem with it 850w , but in my new PC i will put a new PSU all must be new

and corsair is out of choice with really bad exp i had before

It's renewed version. Regardless, if you don't plan to use it with AMD Vega or nVidia RTX3080/3090 then even old revision is okay.

We don't know for sure but there were no reports of new Focus shutting down with RTX3080/3090, only with Prime.

I have just received an Antec Earthwatts Gold Pro 750W to be used for my upcoming 3080. Based on the serial # it appears to be a 2019 unit. How can I test it with my GPU to definitively know if it has the defects described in the original topic? Just run it at 100% for a half hour and see if it crashes? Is there any risk of damaging components if it is faulty and I continue to use it until I get a new one?

Will it damage my components?

I got rid of my GX 750 watt and bought a Corsair 850 RMX. I no longer have black screens with my 2070. Or it could of been my icue software causing black screens.

iCue has some serious issues. On my laptop it prevents the laptop from using the intel hd gpu. As a result laptop always uses the 1060 and heats up.

Wow, this topic is huge! (and a bit confusing ;)), so I'll add in my request for advice too. I'm troubleshooting intermittent hangs, freezes and pc shut downs and it was suggested I replace my 500W psu. I have a 1070 Ti and the SeaSonic FOCUS Plus Gold 650 W 80+ Gold was recommended to me by a Reddit user (yes, I have been there as well). After reading through many of the posts here, I'm coming to realize that other psu's are more highly recommended at the same price point, notably the Corsair RMx (2018) 650 W 80 which is currently on a good sale on Amazon.ca. It's a bit bigger than Seasonic (160mm vs 140 or 120 depending on the unit) so I need to check my case to see if it fits. But, and here's the question, is this an alternative unit you would recommend or is there something more recent that's a better option in the same price range? My PC is getting up there, so any psu I buy now will likely be used in a future build, but stlil needs to work in my 2017 HP Omen for now :)

HP OMEN 880-109 prebuilt w/ Tampa2 MOBO, Intel Core i5-8400 @ 2.80GHz,  16GB (2 x 8GB) Corsair Vengeance LPX RAM @  2400, EVGA GTX 1070 Ti (Black Edition), 500GB Toshiba NVMe M.2, 1TB Samsung Evo SSD, 1TB WD SATA HDD, 1TB Samsung SATA HDD, Seasonic Focus Plus Platinum 750W PSU, 2xHP Pavilion 23" HD monitors @ 60Hz, Windows 10 Home Edition.

The RM/x is considered slightly better due to a better fan and the protection issues previously on the Seasonics. Might be more if anyone chips in.

Depends on what's available locally, here at that price/performance usually the RM is the most expensive so you need to weigh that up as some may be nearly as good but much better value etc.

Typically I recommend as available locally here:

Corsair RM/RMx

Seasonic Focus/Focus Plus

NZXT C Series (Seasonic Focus platform)

Fractal ion+

Bitfenix Whisper M

It depends a lot on what's available and pricing/specials

Does the current Omen PSU have any weird non standard connectors or anything like that ?

Well fuck, I just recommended my friend get the Seasonic FOCUS GX-550 (SSR-550FX) to replace his PSU that was causing blue screens. I hope this is one of the okay ones, Im going to feel really bad if he paid $100 and it didnt fix his issue.

Thank you for the recommendations, artuc!

Hm, non-standard connections? Don't think so? I have 5 drives (SATA, M.2, SSDs), 2 ram sticks, the gpu, capture card, maxed out the usb slots (which includes a USB hub) and my audio system connected to the PC.

But that's a good point. This started way back when I added 1) the gpu, 2) the M.2 and 3) Windows 10 Fall Creators update back in 2017 (6 months after purchase) and has been getting progressively worse. I also noticed yesterday that the leds on my new keyboard are flickering, but not sure if that's related to the PC or the keyboard just yet as I have yet to flash it.

Today I plan on cleaning the components (blowing out the cat hair and dust), checking seating and looking for any bad connections as well as removing two of the hard drives I don't use.  The power cable to the PC has always been very touchy, so will see if I have another laying around and change that out too.

Thank you again!

I can think of plenty of situations before where bluescreens were fixed by replacing the PSU.
