Windows 10 installation complete pain

Hi all.

So I have installed Windows before o. My actual build and everything went fine. 

 

I'm changing cases to a mini itx build and will keep 2 storage devices.

 

I received my ASRock z270m itx motherboard and proceeded with installing my new components.

 

+ WD 500gb m.2 

+ 480 something gb burst ssd 

And my 240gb kingston ssd with windows 10 that already works .

 

I booted to check if everything worked and unplugged my Kingston ssd to proceed with clean windows 10 install on

 

-the m.2. pcie (turns off sata 0 slot)

-The 480 gb burst is on sata 1 slot

 

I used a USB with UEFI.

Disabled CSM

Disabled safe Boot

 

Put in boot order:

1-wd m.2 

2-burst ssd

I had some issues with disk formats and all but I used cmd diskpart to change everything to gpt.

 

No error code will choosing disks 

 

Install finishes and I reboot device.

 

Then error code for no boot device .

I turn CSM on and windows safe mode.

 

I also noticed that if I turn off CSM my ssd don't show .

 

I turned CSM on and put all option on UEFI only for second attempt install (recleaned all devices with cmd diskpart) Boot device shows install again

No boot ...

 

I even tried legacy and reformatted my ssd and m.2 to mbr .

Same problem occurs .

 

I formated my main ssd Kingston 240gb ( the one where windows was already on) with cmd diskpart /clean then convert gpt.

 

I moved my ssd around since sata 0 is off .

So :

sata 1 Kingston ( one I don't plan to keep)

sata 2 burst 

+M.2

 

i installed Windows 10 on sata 1 and it works . 

 

I don't get it, I would like some advice on installing it on my other ssd .

 

I feal like I tried everything. It has been 5 days now of looking and trying everything I found on internet...

Hi,

 

What do you mean "USB with UEFI"?

AFAIK you should just download Media creation Tool from Microsoft.com, plug the USB into the PC (it will get formatted), and follow the steps in the tool to "create a bootable USB drive"

 

Then pull out all drives except the one you want the OS on.

Then override the boot sequence in BIOS to boot to that USB and it should just install.

I used Rufus to install Windows boot ( that I downloaded from windows )on a USB with UEFI mode and also since it didn't boot after that I retried via iso. For legacy mode on mbr .

 

I obviously tried with one drive only plugged in .

 

Like I said the installation works it when I reboot that it doesn't work .

Already tried boot order in bios .

I tried it on all the drives i have and windows only booted on the drive I don't plan to keep.

Your out of control lol.  No need to disable CSM or even touch those settings.  DO as guru Mr.Humble said.  Just use media creation tool from MS and it will put in the latest 2019 Windows 10 on it then boot from it and only have one drive connected and insatll the OS on it and let us know what happens.

Rufus is solid, far better than the Windows Media Creation tool (I only use it to download the ISO, then Rufus to build the USB). What options does it give you under CSM? On my X99 Classified mobo, I have to enable UEFI boot, enable CSM, force all the options under CSM to UEFI and then it'll boot off my M.2 SSD just fine.

Like I said I basically tried everything.

 

I did with CSM on/ off 

Enable/disable safety boot.

 

The problem is not the installation process is when I boot.

 

When I boot with the right device it says 

Please select correct device. 

I tried repairing that with cmd and still no work.

 

I'll try again tonight fresh and post images of what I do so it's more clear.

 

I've been trying everything I found on internet since last Thursday.

 

It's really annoying cause it works on the ssd I don't want to keep.

tried it too, also tried legacy. with windows on mmy m.2 on mbr 

tried on ssd on mbr 

no boot

Try GPT and the UEFI option in Rufus, then enable CSM and set everything in the BIOS to UEFI.

tried gpt , tried mbr I don't think the problem is the installation but the boot process

So trying again.

 

 

I took all the ssd off and left the m.2 

Turned CMS off and installed Windows 10 on my m.2

 

I end up with a black screen.

I tried cntrl+win+b+shft

Nothing happened .

Tried cntrl+alt+delete and could reboot .

Still no Windows.

 

 

 

I'm gonna try to replug the ssd with windows and back up to USB / unplug ssd 

Reboot and fix m.2 with back up

Restore back up didn't work . 

I get an error message at the end of the installation. 

I tried both options given by windows 10.

 

I'll try again on my 480 gb ssd.

I will continue my solo quest in finding my problem.

 

 

I set bios to factory settings.

Unplugged everything  (no gpu)

 

 

Plugged in my ssd with windows that boots. (On sata 1.)

Going to redo a windows boot USB with Rufus on uefi mode.

 

 

I switched ssd , disabled CSM.

The ssd doesn't show in boot manager.

 

Secure boot is left on.

And boot option 1 is the uefi USB I put in.

I proceed with windows setup.

This is what I get at disk options.

So I cleaned it with cmd diskpart and set to gpt. 

 

The drive I empty and has unlocated space. I select it and press next .

 

Windows installs itself.

It restarts and I had to turn on CSM with eufi enabled to have my ssd to boot.

I have black screen after reboot.

Trying again clean start

This time I pressed new at the disk selection menu in windows installation

And selected primary volume( the main one ) 

Black screen again ... After reboot.

No ssd activity

I have looked over the web and maybe it has to do with the efi partition. 

 

I tried reformatting it and didn't see to want change anything.

 

I went to bed at 3am. Tired .

Received my louqe ghost s1.

And installed my stuff in there .

My new sfx PSU fried my 2 ssd's.

 

Things are going better and better .

Ordered a new PSU : sf600

And Samsung 1to ssd .

Receiving them on Monday so till then I'll be playing around with my louqe ghost s1

I tried with my old Mobo to install on the sata ssd and same prob. The ssd is well alive and windows is installed but when it reboot's it won't finish the installation.

It's the only drive in . 

Well.. hope I'll find the solution

@Mrfrenchtoast Just so you know :
1) Under GPT/EFI Windows boot, you have to set "Windows Boot Manager" as boot option in UEFI.
Example (bottom of the screen) : 
2) It's HIGHLY recommended to disable/unplug ALL hard drives except the one You want to install Windows on (it eliminates possibility of boot section being on different drive)
3) Disabling CSM is all well and good, BUT make sure you are launching USB pendrive in (U)EFI mode (and M.2 drive itself is formatted in GPT).

Hi thanks for the reply .

I have tried this already.

Anyways I received my Samsung ssd today and had no problem installing Windows on it.

I never found a solution for the m.2 but I can just use it to install my games on.
