LTT Official Folding Month 2019!!!

Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

Alright guys, the time for locking this thread has come, can you all please use the Folding Community Board for all further talk.

Thank you all again for participating in the event.

Once the sheet is cleaned up I will edit this post to add the link to the spreadsheet.

@TVwazhere Can you please lock this thread for me.

Mine did this yesterday. I had to restart my PC and then reloaded and it worked.

Hmm.  Looks like your seeing the slow Download bug that I and one other have seen.  Can we see more logs please? When I’ve seen this occasionally Downloading a new WU will stall but most of the time it will recover but instead of taking 2-3 minutes to Download it takes upwards of 1/2 hour. I know it’s not my internet as other systems are downloading OK.

The other interesting part is that your seeing slow Upload speeds which I’ve not seen before. Usually I see at most one progress indicator for an upload.

It's located in the unfinished portion of the basement next to the furnace and water tank. On the other side of the wall are the shelves in the Recreation Room that have my Home Theatre gear which was a major consideration in locating the equipment there as there is about 8 network drops going through the wall to all the devices. The Fractal Define R4 on the upper shelf is my FreeNAS/Plex server.

It's an Ikea "Sten" shelving unit which works out nicely. I rotated the rack ears on the Cisco switch 90 degrees and screwed it to the underside of the shelves and have a cable "raceway" made from bicycle hooks mounted to the joists between the Supply and Return HVAC ducts. Very Ghetto but "management" doesn't mind as long as I keep things tidy in the finished portions of the house.

Aaahhh well it looks very cleverly organised to me. Why are the UPS's necessary? Do you have problems with grid outages where you are?

I think I might have a problem.

I went out to Home Depot and picked up the parts to replace the old 20A, 240v 2-wire connection for the old electric water heater that is beside my folding rack with a 12/3 to feed a split duplex 15/20A 120V outlet.

Also picked up 10m of SJOO 14/3 and a 15L and P to make a fat extension cord just in case.

I don’t think I want to see my electricity bill in November.

Is there a 12-step program for folding?

its a 2 step program install fah crank slider to full.... oh god they got me again. lol

Rack.thumb.jpg.a7b05a8d0842711a899226b6651d0f1c.jpgSpent the weekend doing maintenance. Got proper 14 AWG extension cords run replacing an 18 AWG cord, re-arranged the cards in the rigs to balance power per rig better, rearranged the UPSes to better balance power draw on each breaker.

Finally got all my UPSes working properly under Linux so I can monitor the power loading at the wall, Production in PPD per Card and per System and got my new rig fully instrumented.

Moved one rig over to my “rack” and rearranged the systems and UPSes physically on the “rack”

I still have to tweak the BIOS fan curves on a couple of systems and do the final card rearrangement and a general dusting but that will have to wait for next weekend.

Still working on moving the stats server from the current dual-core atom NetTop to the ESXi but still have a couple of issues to wrinkle out.

This week I’m starting to work on ingesting the F@H flat files into a SQL database for reporting during the event. As we are heading towards 1500 users we’ll need as much automation as possible to keep on top of things.

This is goals! also be careful with the ups on its side lead acid batteries definitely aren't fans of that long term even if sealed.

Core, as iirc folding isn’t too memory intensive

Core is most important but folding does definitely benefit from mem oc as well. (to a point) I found that with some WU's that weren't utilizing my card fully that after increacing the mem oc it would go from 90% usage to 93-95% so definitely don't sleep on memory but also be careful as slightly unstable memory will fail WU's very easily and wont be easy to pin down why.

Thanks

The client was acting up so did a restart(computer) and it seemed to have worked itself out

in windows to kill all folding you can right click the icon in the tray and hit quit which will stop the client (different from the advanced controler)

Hey guys question, was away on the weekend and when I came back last night ym machine wasn't folding anymore. I rebooted/updated windows, went to bed and now this afternoon I have the same issue as when i got home last night

Everything is 'unkown'.

Before I left on friday morning everything was running okay, besides the daily errors when completing WU's, bad thing returned or something along the lines.

Hope someone can help me out here

Thanks

No errors today either, just finished up a project and it stopped

Just as a question since this seems to be happening to multiple people now did it happen on your windows rig or your linux rig @Gorgon

All "server" applications for a system should be run with the idea of backup and redundancy so when you have that ingrained into your head all the time the goal is to put any headless or 24/7 running system on a ups just to mitigate issues that can come up. It also helps clean the power delivery from things like brown outs or momentary hickups that most house power will have from time to time. (ever notice your lights flicker just slightly)

I’ll have a look if there’s anymore log available, might of deleted it last week. Internet isn’t the best here in my building but from my head it’s like 90down and 45 up. (Speedtest results) and it does work fine, and was working fine

As PaleSpartan mentioned mostly for handling power issues to ensue availability. Just doesn't seem worthwhile spend all that money and not have at least surge suppression. The power where I live is pretty good though.

The main reason is so I can read the UPS output load and calculate efficiency.

They shouldn't be, at least in the US market. Some foolish ex-GPU miners still hold out on mining craze prices but they're delusional, a Vega 56 shouldn't be much more than $200-250 max, though IDK the current fair market value for the 64/FE, I think those are around $300-350 max.

If you want cards for folding, then a $200 used 1070 (1070s may have dropped more in price though) or $200-250 1660 Ti is a much better choice, even the 1660 Ti out-does the Vega cards in PPD (I know it beats my RVII, pretty sure it beats or matches the 64 as well). 1660 Ti also eats up to 130W max, under folding load it's probably closer to 100-115W or so. Whereas the RVII eats... I think around 200W or mebbe a bit more for a slightly lower PPD. And the RVII is better on power than the older Vegas.

What do you use for overclocking and fan control?

For fan control and Overclocking, once you’ve enable coolbits, you have to use nvidia-settings. The problem is it expects you to be logged into an X Windows session so if your running it headless you need to go through some chicanery by Either you have to use HDMI Dummy Plugs to spoof a connected display or:

Run “pf -ef | grep auth” to find the location of the Xauthority file the use that in a remote SSH session on the command line with the nvidia-settings app.

No, no references for the advanced stuff, it’s just mostly observations I’ve made over time.

I’ll post some examples in the HowTo.

... Just as a question since this seems to be happening to multiple people now did it happen on your windows rig or your linux rig @Gorgon ...

Windows? You can fold on Windows?

It’s happened 3 times in the last week on two separate Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS rigs with current Nvidia drivers.

I’ll likely be removing my RadeonPro card from my Windows Daily Driver and installing a 1060 later this week when I do the final card rearranging in preparation for the fold-a-thon.

Oooooooooo 5960X J batches hella nice, I know some guys run them at 5Ghz on water. I’d like to get my hands on one at some point to do just that.

My previous one is a J Batch as well.  It didn't do 5GHz, but it cruise at 4.6GHz (it could do 4.8GHz, but oof, toasty).  Hope I can get around 4.6-4.8GHz out of this one.  They are very strong chips for sure.  Big reason I even have TRs is because my former 5960X went belly up and the used prices on 5960X J Batches where still north of 700 bucks.

In mean time, I need to re-work my rigs and get my GPUs all ready.  Though, trying to sell off two to three and use the dough to do a partial refresh on the herd.   Did do a long overdue BIOS and driver updates for one of my X399 (so far it seems a tad snappier in W10).

They're better in a lot of compute stuff and when properly tuned are faster, especially at 1440p and 4K (I think it's the HBM2 that helps Vega there but IDK if that's it for sure, they just do better at resolutions higher than 1080p). Should be around the same or slightly more than a 1070, IIRC 1070s are still around $200.

this is correct, im just a dangus and forget somehow that starting bid price isn't actually equivalent to final price. i keep making silly errors like this, trust me i find it irritating as well
