LTT Official Folding Month 2019!!!

Spent the weekend doing maintenance. Got proper 14 AWG extension cords run replacing an 18 AWG cord, re-arranged the cards in the rigs to balance power per rig better, rearranged the UPSes to better balance power draw on each breaker.

 

Finally got all my UPSes working properly under Linux so I can monitor the power loading at the wall, Production in PPD per Card and per System and got my new rig fully instrumented.

 

Moved one rig over to my “rack” and rearranged the systems and UPSes physically on the “rack”

 

I still have to tweak the BIOS fan curves on a couple of systems and do the final card rearrangement and a general dusting but that will have to wait for next weekend.

 

Still working on moving the stats server from the current dual-core atom NetTop to the ESXi but still have a couple of issues to wrinkle out.

 

This week I’m starting to work on ingesting the F@H flat files into a SQL database for reporting during the event. As we are heading towards 1500 users we’ll need as much automation as possible to keep on top of things.

I snuck a SuperMicro SC731 with an i7 NUC on top in there for good measure.

 

The SC731 has a 80mm 4000rpm 3-pin Delta fan in front so I had to get it further away from my Daily Driver.

Hey everybody, I have a question about FaH. I curently fold with 3 gpus, and stock I get about 600 000 pts/day stock. I want to try to push them for the folding month to get the most out of my setup, but should I rather push core or memory clocks to get the best performance in FaH ?

Core, as iirc folding isn’t too memory intensive

@Zando Bob (continued from cursed PC build) well, as s time I don’t actually have a motherboard, however, I was looking at those cheap X58/X79 Chinese boards you see on eBay, and was wondering what CPU would be good for having a bunch of PCIE lanes/bandwidth for folding/possibly running game servers for things such as Space Engineers and Minecraft.

There's no PCIe lane differences on X58 Xeons AFAIK, they're all enterprise CPUs, not i7s that can get cut down (like my 5820K having less PCIe lanes than the 5930K). I can populate all 7 slots on my Classified X58 5-Way SLI with a single X5670. I'd avoid chinesium boards just because they're iffy, try and get your hands on an EVGA Classified board, ASUS P6T/Rampage series, IIRC a few of the Gigabyte ones are solid. MSI Big Bang mobos are solid, but a guy on the X58 thread in my sig has had issues with Westmere-EP CPUs on his. I managed to get my first board, an ASUS Rampage III Formula, with an X5675 for $120. Scored an X58 Classified 3-Way SLI with an i7 920 for $90. IIRC prices have come down a bit with Zen 2's release as well, should be able to snag a deal on a proper mobo. Or you go for a SuperMicro server board, those can run ECC Registered DDR3, and that stuff is hella cheap due to servers dumping a massive amount of it on the market, and people not being able to run it on an X58 board (Intel 5520 is the server chipset, it's different from X58 and funnily enough what the SR-2 runs in order to have compatibility with two CPUs).

@Gorgon Damn, that's impressive! Is that in a cupboard or garage? Presumably you can run high fan speeds as noise isn't an issue?

Quad channel DDR3, you could get unregistered ECC but AFAIK that still won't run registered ECC. Good OCIng capabilities, the 3000 series i7s can hit 4.8-5GHz if you get a golden chip, AFAIK most still do 4.6-4.7 and compete with modern CPUs. The Xeon 1680v2 is an 8c/16t OCable Xeon (v2 Xeons are all OCable AFAIK, v3s and v4s are not), at 4.6GHz it beats a 2700X and competes with a 9900K according to Tech Yes City's tests. If you're not OCing, you just yoink any Xeon with the core count/Ghz/price combo you want. Main difference between that an X99 is it uses cheaper DDR3 and has worse NVMe SSD support (main difference between X99 and X299 is more PCIe lanes and higher core count CPUs, and better NVMe SSD support on most mobos).

I have the one linked below. In quick testing top two x16 slots are x16 (confirmed the 2nd was x16 with x4 SSD in slot 1). 3rd slot is x4 so I'm guessing it is from chipset, because with a Xeon CPU it could be x8.

 

Takes registered ECC ram if it helps, presumably only with a Xeon in place.

It's located in the unfinished portion of the basement next to the furnace and water tank. On the other side of the wall are the shelves in the Recreation Room that have my Home Theatre gear which was a major consideration in locating the equipment there as there is about 8 network drops going through the wall to all the devices. The Fractal Define R4 on the upper shelf is my FreeNAS/Plex server.

 

It's an Ikea "Sten" shelving unit which works out nicely. I rotated the rack ears on the Cisco switch 90 degrees and screwed it to the underside of the shelves and have a cable "raceway" made from bicycle hooks mounted to the joists between the Supply and Return HVAC ducts. Very Ghetto but "management" doesn't mind as long as I keep things tidy in the finished portions of the house.

Quitting the advanced client does not restart the Folding. In order to do that you have to look for the client itself and stop and start that.

 

Ive had several WUs take over 1/2 hour to download and I’ve been collecting information in case I need to submit a report.

 

You aren’t showing the log for the slot stuck in downloading. Filter by Slot 1 in the log view so we can see what’s going on.

 

In one case I had to purge the WU and restart the folding daemon to get it unstuck

Yep, the older HEDT Intel setups are solid choices.  I run one X99 w/ a 2670V3 in my third rig.  Need to get my 2nd X99 up and running with the 5960X J Batch I manage to get my hands on.  Just hope this time I don't kill this one.

Oooooooooo 5960X J batches hella nice, I know some guys run them at 5Ghz on water. I’d like to get my hands on one at some point to do just that.

Hey guys question, was away on the weekend and when I came back last night ym machine wasn't folding anymore. I rebooted/updated windows, went to bed and now this afternoon I have the same issue as when i got home last night 

 

Everything is 'unkown'.

 

Before I left on friday morning everything was running okay, besides the daily errors when completing WU's, bad thing returned or something along the lines.

 

Hope someone can help me out here

@Stormseeker9 perhaps a blue screen while you were away caused this? What was causing your WUS to fail.

No as when I came back home pc was still on, everything open and logged in. 

 

Something along the lines of bad work unit error or so, don’t exactly remember, but now it just stopped folding all together, even when I click fold it won’t start, except after a reboot of the PC.

Mine did this yesterday. I had to restart my PC and then reloaded and it worked.
