Just ordered a computer with a 1660 and an r7 3700x for less than 800 with a good mobo 32gb of ram and a whole bunch of other goodies. I should get it before folding month. Ill be running that a 980 a 1060 3gb and a 1050ti and ill probably fold on 14 threads of my 3700x. I wont use my i5 3570 cpus though. Horrible ppw

Does anyone know what the performance difference is for x1, x4, x8 and x16 lanes? I know that on x1(usually with PCIe Risers) it is not worth folding, but what about x8 and x4? I plan on building folding rig(s) but I do not know if I should go for few systems or one high-end system with 3-4 GPU's. Does anyone have a perfect solution for me?

Also, I'd like to know what you guys(@catawalks, @Cbwgoose, @miker07, @GOTSpectrum, @Den-Fi, @Gorgon) are using(full setups: GPU/Mobo/CPU).

If anyone wants an extra 650ti to fold on message me. Ill only charge postage. Id run it but i dont have enough pcie slots. Shouldnt be more than 7 dollars if shipped in the us.

I'd use it for folding since I have a few PCIe slots and lanes open but I do not think it is worth for you to send it to Serbia. 😅

probably not lol. Its only about a 45k ppd card i think and it uses damn near 100 watts. Its worse than ryzen third gen cpu folding ppw

HEDT (x299 etc) are just not worth it. The boards and CPUs are more expensive and you start getting into expensive power supplies and having to fart around with esoteric eATX cases and PCIe riser cables.

The least expensive sli-capable x370, x470, z170, z370 or z390 motherboard. This gives you two PCIe x16 at x8/x8.

A 650W Gold power supply as they’re not much more than a Bronze at this price point and 650W lets you run up to 2 RTX 2070s with a bit to spare.

a 2c/4t processor with 16 PCIe3 lanes off the CPU (i.e not AMD with APU) Intel Pentium Gold 5400 or 5500 or AMD 1200, 1600, 1700, whatever is cheapest and at least 1.9GHz

a single stick of DDR4-2400 you don’t need lots of memory or memory bandwidth.

2 NVidia 1660Ti or RTX 2060 (Supers) (Best bang for the buck in Canada currently)

a M.2 SATA Disk so no cable clutter

Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Desktop

A box to put it in or a piece of plywood

110 or 140mm fans

Recently I’ve been getting 2700 and 2700x CPUs and running BOINC on the unused threads as these are found deeply discounted.

If money were no object I’d get a x299 with 4 PCIe slots and 3 M.2, a mining chassis, a 2920x, couple of 1000W power supplies and 3 x Powered M.2 to PCIe3 x4 adapters and 4 PCIe extenders and 7 cards, 4 x 2070 or 2080 Supers and 3 x 2060 Supers. PCIe3 x4 under Linux is sufficient to drive a 2080Ti with little to no loss in performance.

well, today's the last day i'm gonna be able to do some proper folding for a bit. i've got three machines on now but two are going to be coming down once they've finished their WU's.

i should have access to a GTX970 where i'm going, and potentially could run the 1060 in this laptop.

The 1920x is actually 199 on amazon right now, so it looks like a pretty good choice for anyone looking for a lot of pcie lanes for (relatively) cheap.

There is another HEDT option: X79. The chinese mobos are cheap and if CPU performance doesn't matter, the lower end Xeons are dirt cheap and gets you 44 PCIe lanes. DDR3 to feed it is also pretty cheap now. You still need a fat PSU anyway to power the GPUs. The board I have has 3 x16 slots, although there is no documentation and I never checked how those slots are connected - I'll do it on mine shortly. Probably worth putting one of the GPUs on a riser so they have room to breathe.

this^ even non-chinese x79 boards are fairly cheap these days and DDR3 on ebay is so cheap you might as well tile your walls with it

Just moved the GPU around on my no name X79 board, and it looks like the top two slots are x16, but the 3rd slot is x4 so they probably connected it to chipset.

The 1920x is actually 199 on amazon right now, so it looks like a pretty good choice for anyone looking for a lot of pcie lanes for (relatively) cheap.

1920x for $199 seems like a good deal until you realise you also need a $300+ motherboard + DDR4 memory + a TR4 compatible cooler.

Though I guess if you're planning on using it with a bunch of RTX2080Tis then it probably doesn't matter.

Yeah some of those have potential as most aren’t based on x79 but have used or knock-off c220 or c260 PCHs so if the BIOS is half decent they have some interesting use cases.

at least 2 sticks of DDR4 to boot as well and the 1000 series can be fussy about memory whereas x370 and 470 with Ryzen 2000 will work with most low end 2133 and 2400 kits.

The mobo I have reports X79 in usual software... any way to tell if it is "faked" from C220/C260? Like I wonder if the IDs are different... these boards seem to support registered ram which I thought was a server thing. Also the bios looks more like server ones I've seen than other consumer HEDT boards like X99/X299.

DDR4 kits are pretty cheap at the moment. 3000MHz kit 4x8GB (32GB) for $130 :|

Was only about a year ago that $130 would be a good price for 2x8GB 3000MHz.

GPUZ should report the actual chipset. Craft Computing did a series of Utube videos

You can also pop the heat sink off the PCH

If money were no object I’d get a x299 with 4 PCIe slots and 3 M.2, a mining chassis, a 2920x, couple of 1000W power supplies and 3 x Powered M.2 to PCIe3 x4 adapters and 4 PCIe extenders and 7 cards, 4 x 2070 or 2080 Supers and 3 x 2060 Supers. PCIe3 x4 under Linux is sufficient to drive a 2080Ti with little to no loss in performance.

For me I'd grab a dual EPYC 64 core server and kit it out with cards, imagine the efficient BOINC points as well as all dem fat PCIe lanes, kit it out with 2080tis and just laugh in F@H points.

HEDT (x299 etc) are just not worth it.

What if you get your x99 platform as a trade for a ryzen platform because it has issues with rebooting....

my 1080ti is currently chugging along at 1.1mppd but back on core22 i was seeing 1.4-1.6. my 2080ti on core22 was giving 3.2 so it's refreshing to see that core21 CAN do this.

14180 was a real pain in the ass but there was one unit worse than that which brought my 2080ti down to just 1.1m.
i'll have to see how pascal fares on p14226 because i know on c22 p11733 my 1070ti's got just shy of 1mppd so i can use that as a nice round number to gauge things off of

also i love how just that one 2080ti could set me neatly in at the top of the leaderboards if i ran it 24/7, not to mention the 1080ti, 1070ti and 1060 that are going today too!
