There is another HEDT option: X79. The chinese mobos are cheap and if CPU performance doesn't matter, the lower end Xeons are dirt cheap and gets you 44 PCIe lanes. DDR3 to feed it is also pretty cheap now. You still need a fat PSU anyway to power the GPUs. The board I have has 3 x16 slots, although there is no documentation and I never checked how those slots are connected - I'll do it on mine shortly. Probably worth putting one of the GPUs on a riser so they have room to breathe.

Just moved the GPU around on my no name X79 board, and it looks like the top two slots are x16, but the 3rd slot is x4 so they probably connected it to chipset.

1920x for $199 seems like a good deal until you realise you also need a $300+ motherboard + DDR4 memory + a TR4 compatible cooler.

 

Though I guess if you're planning on using it with a bunch of RTX2080Tis then it probably doesn't matter.

Yeah some of those have potential as most aren’t based on x79 but have used or knock-off c220 or c260 PCHs so if the BIOS is half decent they have some interesting use cases.

at least 2 sticks of DDR4 to boot as well and the 1000 series can be fussy about memory whereas x370 and 470 with Ryzen 2000 will work with most low end 2133 and 2400 kits.

The mobo I have reports X79 in usual software... any way to tell if it is "faked" from C220/C260? Like I wonder if the IDs are different... these boards seem to support registered ram which I thought was a server thing. Also the bios looks more like server ones I've seen than other consumer HEDT boards like X99/X299.

DDR4 kits are pretty cheap at the moment. 3000MHz kit 4x8GB (32GB) for $130

GPUZ should report the actual chipset. Craft Computing did a series of Utube videos

You can also pop the heat sink off the PCH

I’m getting 1.34MPPD averaged over a month on Linux with my 2070 with 80% Fan, 240W Power Limit and an +120MHz GPU overclock. So assuming a 5-10% innefficiency under Windows you should be able to push it further if you can keep the Temperature in check.

Do you overclock memory aswell?

 

I've got +100 on my 2070 super and +500 Memoery last night so see how that effects the PPD. got my fans at 85% and system fans at 100% (not bothered about noise as in a seperate room.  Temps are 60c

 

also have the 1070ti underneath it with +100 and +990 on memory. fans 66% and temps at 50c

I've got auto fan. memory +500  ( but somehown my card recently runs at 7300mhz not 7500mhz anymore) and a +185mhz core overclock.

powerlimit max ( I believe 112%) didnt touch voltage

 

temps average at 66 I think

Nope, don’t touch memory. My testing using FAHBench under Linux saw little to no improvement but YMMV.

 

In general I try to keep temps under 80C on an upper card and GPU fans under  80% for competitions and temps in the low to mid 70s and fans under 66% for long-term to try to reduce wear.

+185 seems a might aggressive. You might have a golden sample but you might find it errors out the odd WU.  I used to run one step (13MHz for Pascal & 15MHz for Turing) below stable observed using FAHBench but found that ocassionally I’d get a WU Failure on a GPU so I just bump them all down 2 steps.

 

Most of my cards run +65 but my 2070 runs at 120 and 1070 Ti at 170 for months.

 

The other trade off is the cards at high power limits have greatly reduced efficiency and are harder to cool so I usually reduce power down to 80-90% when not competing. I’ve found that makes it a lot easier to keep cool and easier on the power bill.
