Here's the last little bit of the log from the previous failed work unit.  The "clean exit" line at the bottom is from when I manually stopped the service, not from that work unit succeeding.

It's not the end of the world, the solution seems to be to just stop the service, delete the /var/lib/fahclient/work folder and then restart the service so it's forced to start fresh, but it's still kinda strange that FAH isn't catching these itself.  I've written a script to make "fixing" the issue a little faster; I may poke around and see if there's some way I can automate a detection of a failure like this that launches my cleanup script automatically instead of relying on me to check in on it every now and then and do it manually.

Im seeing messages about reducing the CPU cores from 5 to 4. F@H doesn’t like some prime numbers of cores so you might want to manually reduce the cores to 4 though I doubt this is at the root of your issue.

Most people feel that CPU folding is not worth the extra heat for very little gain compared to GPUs. I tend to use my CPUs for BOINC and my GPUs for folding but you have to have good airflow as you don’t want the heat produced from your CPU increasing your GPU’s temperature causing it to not boost as high.

 

During Folding competitions however, all bets are off, all fans are at full, overclocks maxed and the CPUs are thrown into the fray to eek out the most points possible.

Likely only if the case is airflow constrained which you’d see GPU temps in the 80s at which point the boost algorithm will start to really down Clock the GPU.

 

Try it both ways and check the GPU temperature and Shader clocks in MSI afterburner, EVGA Precision Boost or HWinfo64.

I had my GPU fan at 75% and core +100Mhz, that resulted boost clock of little shy of 1900Mhz. Increasing the fan to 85% did drop my temps few degrees but that resulted boost clock of 1949Mhz with the same +100Mhz core settings. Current GPU temp is around 65C, Nvidia doesn't report the hot spot temp so some part of the GPU might be now cool enough for higher boost clock. Weird thing this GPU boost 3.0.

Just ordered a computer with a 1660 and an r7 3700x for less than 800 with a good mobo 32gb of ram and a whole bunch of other goodies. I should get it before folding month. Ill be running that a 980 a 1060 3gb and a 1050ti and ill probably fold on 14 threads of my 3700x. I wont use my i5 3570 cpus though. Horrible ppw

Does anyone know what the performance difference is for x1, x4, x8 and x16 lanes? I know that on x1(usually with PCIe Risers) it is not worth folding, but what about x8 and x4? I plan on building folding rig(s) but I do not know if I should go for few systems or one high-end system with 3-4 GPU's. Does anyone have a perfect solution for me? 

Also, I'd like to know what you guys(@catawalks, @Cbwgoose, @miker07, @GOTSpectrum, @Den-Fi, @Gorgon) are using(full setups: GPU/Mobo/CPU).

probably not lol. Its only about a 45k ppd card i think and it uses damn near 100 watts. Its worse than ryzen third gen cpu folding ppw

HEDT (x299 etc) are just not worth it. The boards and CPUs are more expensive and you start getting into expensive power supplies and having to fart around with esoteric eATX cases and PCIe riser cables.

 

The least expensive sli-capable x370, x470, z170, z370 or z390 motherboard. This gives you two PCIe x16 at x8/x8.

A 650W Gold power supply as they’re not much more than a Bronze at this price point and 650W lets you run up to 2 RTX 2070s with a bit to spare.

a 2c/4t processor with 16 PCIe3 lanes off the CPU (i.e not AMD with APU) Intel Pentium Gold 5400 or 5500 or AMD 1200, 1600, 1700, whatever is cheapest and at least 1.9GHz

a single stick of DDR4-2400 you don’t need lots of memory or memory bandwidth.

2 NVidia 1660Ti or RTX 2060 (Supers) (Best bang for the buck in Canada currently)

a M.2 SATA Disk so no cable clutter

Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Desktop

A box to put it in or a piece of plywood

110 or 140mm fans

 

Recently I’ve been getting 2700 and 2700x CPUs and running BOINC on the unused threads as these are found deeply discounted.

 

If money were no object I’d get a x299 with 4 PCIe slots and 3 M.2, a mining chassis, a 2920x, couple of 1000W power supplies and 3 x Powered M.2 to PCIe3 x4 adapters and 4 PCIe extenders and 7 cards, 4 x 2070 or 2080 Supers and 3 x 2060 Supers. PCIe3 x4 under Linux is sufficient to drive a 2080Ti with little to no loss in performance.

The 1920x is actually 199 on amazon right now, so it looks like a pretty good choice for anyone looking for a lot of pcie lanes for (relatively) cheap.
