LTT Official Folding Month 2019!!!

Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

Alright guys, the time for locking this thread has come, can you all please use the Folding Community Board for all further talk.

Thank you all again for participating in the event.

Once the sheet is cleaned up I will edit this post to add the link to the spreadsheet.

@TVwazhere Can you please lock this thread for me.

With me hitting 1 billion points it looks like one of my systems, which was actually built to order for a client will finally be going to its new home now the client is paying up. Part of me kinda wished it took them longer.

What kinda hardware are you pulling out of the fold with that system?

Surprisingly  even though i was folding on full  on CPU & both GPUs - CS:GO was running fine.  Now had to stop folding on the 2070s for a couple of hours while i played some competition games.. just encase lol

I disable folding only during the night as coil whine is unbearable on my 1080Ti (even though I am on custom water loop) when everything is silent in the room. During the day, I play Faceit and Competitive MM with GPU folding always on "Full", I lose a few fps but it does not matter for me as my PC gets 150-200fps during the game but I have "only" 120Hz monitor.

Tho, I do not know much about CPU folding, but since you already earning 1.3m per day, I'd recommend you to disable it as it uses too much power for little gain. And it heats up the room much more than GPU in my case at least.

Hmm Good point ref the CPU... will help with keeping temps down & noise

well at least until i sell the 1070ti

What do you mean CPU folding uses too much power for gain? Should I just be folding on GPU?

Yee, most people just fold on the GPU because it’s much more efficient. The CPU just eats power and doesn’t add much to the score.

As far as I know 2060 is the best PPDPD(Points Per Day Per Dolar) card out there but you can check all the PPD's of cards here and I think you can find somewhere in this thread, someone compared all PPDPD's recently.

Like @Favebook said, the 2060 is the best PPD/$. The 1660 Ti is close and starts cheaper though, so if you want the cheapest GPU then it's the best option rn. That's what I have in my folding rig, a 1660 Ti and 1050 Ti. IDK how much the 1050 Ti helps, but 1660 Tis push about the same PPD my RVII does while using a heck ton less power and being less than half the price (RIP Vega for folding, it's not a workload Vega does very well).

Just as a question why not disable any overclock to lower or remove the coil whine while sleeping then reenable it when you wake up. You could see a vast increase in effective folding

Actually tried that already. Tried almost everything (didn't replace PSU and didn't try other mobo as I do not have too much money to throw on it - already "wasted" a lot on it).

Lowering CC or MC does not affect coil whine at all. Using 100% power limit is the worst. 150% with max core voltage seems to be best as I get a lot more from my GPU and weirdly coil whine is lower...

And going below 100% PL does seem to lower coil whine but not enough as I still cannot fall asleep even if it is on 75%. On 60% it seems to be the most quiet but I do not think PPD on 60% is worth that much in my opinion. 50-60% PL is same on coil whine matter but it does lose 10% of power so I do not even consider going lower than 60%

Can't the ports F@H use are outbound blocked so I'd have to ask for it to be allowed for the proxy or ssh tunnel, F@H uses port 80 and 8080 (this one is now blocked).

If you proxy, ssh, or vpn out of your network you can do so using whatever port you want then on the other end (outside of your network) it would use the ports it wanted to. (80 and 8080 are commonly used for http traffic so very common for them to be blocked) vpn might be the easiest to implement.

It really depends on your budget but really the best thing to do is just buy the best used one you can for your money. There are references for which ones are better than other but general rule of thumb is better gaming performance = better folding performance.

I had the same problem on my 970s it seems the coil wine is directly related to the core clock as it would get higher pitch as the clock got higher but never went away no matter what the clocks were. I can only imagine how much worse it is on a water cooled rig. I found for mine that it was the mobo gpu combination that was the actual cause of it. I believe it comes from the power delivery that comes straight from the pcie slot so maybe if your feeling risky enough to go into bios and change the pcie power settings it could help if you wanted to mess around and see but definitely no guarantee.

Yeah, my first plan is to try and endure this as much as possible. The next phase will be replacing the PSU with one that is not corsair. If that doesn't work, I will just give up and wait for next build (probably not before 2020-2021) as it would be too much of a hassle to get a new Mobo, new cpu block for that mobo and then bend the tubes again due to little variances...

Also, I've done some overclocking during the last 2 years, but I never saw PCIe power settings in BIOS. I have Gigabyte motherboard, do you know where might these settings be located?

No idea its not really something I've even looked at outside of mining boards. but usually there is a way of changing power state setting near where you choose the PCIE gen settings.

I don't think you understand, there is no path out of our datacenter that does not go through the firewall hence a proxy or ssh tunnel isn't going to help in this instance. There are armed guards at every exit that will shoot on sight ?. I jest but these servers cannot just connect to a proxy or ssh tunnel as to do so would mean the traffic has to go through the firewall to these or you have to create them inside the datacenter network so the servers can connect to them but then the datacenter firewall will just block the proxy/ssh tunnel server.

Sadly I don't think even Colonel Hogan could break out of this POW camp.

Edit:

If I get round to it I'll ask for the ports to be opened for the required servers, I mean F@H is a kind of legit purpose lol.
