I went ahead and fired my rig up yesterday.  2.2M today.  Hopefully I can maintain or increase that number.  Still at stock clocks, I may overclock before too long.  I have room for two more cards if anyone wants to donate!  ?

So…your proxy is also blocking all normal web traffic?

There is no proxy, if one were created it would get blocked just the same.

I'll donate you a 980ti is you donate me a 2080. It's no a to so the 980ti is obviously better

Hello, I'm new to folding and have a few questions. When on medium folding power CPU temp goes up to 80 C - 90 C, yesterday it went up to 99 C so I put it back to light. Is there a way to limit folding so it doesn't go pass a certain temperature?

Would it be better to use my cpu to fold or graphics card?

How do I fold with my graphics card when in light mode? I mostly fold in light mode and the work in the graphics card stays in idle.

specs:

Ryzen 2400g

XFX RX 580 GTS Black Edition 1425MHz OC+

Corsair CXM 550W 80+ Bronze

Everything is at stock settings with stock cooling

Below are the values when folding is at medium and light.

Max = medium folding

Current value = light

Yeah, that's quite hot. Sounds like your CPU cooler isn't up to the task. Those stock Ryzen coolers probably aren't designed for 24/7 intensive loads like this, and if your case has poor airflow it will be quite bad.

Graphics card is by far more powerful at folding. I wouldn't bother folding with the CPU.
Delete the slot for the CPU in the Advanced Control and just keep the GPU running.

@Syaoran, Agree with Spotty. That's too hot for sustained running, so best to just run the GPU. And you can bump up the GPU and case fan speed to lower your GPU temps.

If you hadn't figured it out already, here's how you delete the cpu slot:

Alright I deleted the cpu slot, Is there a way to have the GPU running when in light mode?

Also the work associated with cpu is gone from the work queue, did it get deleted too?

No... Light mode disables GPU Folding. See: https://foldingathome.org/faqs/fah-v7/v7-introduction/web-control/folding-power-slider/

Quote

The Power slider has three positions and two running options:

  • Light
    • CPU is Folding at half speed, GPU Folding is off.
  • Medium
    • CPU is Folding at three-quarter speed. GPU Folding is on. This is the default setting, and recommended for most users.
  • Full
    • CPU is Folding at full speed. GPU Folding is on. This is the most productive setting. Will cause fans to run faster and may produce more heat.

Yes, when you delete the slot you lose the work unit that was in progress. Wouldn't worry too much about it, wouldn't be many points and your GPU will earn 10x that easily.

@SyaoranDefinetly something up with your chassis cooling. Those HWinfo plots show you CPU getting really hot at 100% load but more worrying is the motherboard temperature sensors are all above 40C.

Check your case fans and make sure their pointing in the right direction. A quick check is to run the system for 20 minutes or so and check the temps then open the side while running, wait a few minutes and if you see a dramatic drop in temperatures then you have an airflow problem.

My test system is a mid tower with 120mm front and side intake and a 92mm rear exhaust.  I have to crank the fans but can fold full power with the CPU and a RTX 2070 in it. It gets a little toasty but it is an older chassis (Fractal Core 1100) and opening the side helps.

Question guys,

up until this morning when Folding was on FULL it used to occupy 99% cpu. Now it seems to not use more than can be seen in the attached screenshot(47-55%). Any clue what I have done wrong, if anything?

You have RTX card and you use 15 cores of your cpu. I would leave at least one physical core for the gpu. Nvidia cards need one core per card to work at full capacity.

Yeah but what I’m mean is, I didn’t change any settings - until last night / this morning it would run full 99% on CPU. Only Cuda’ cores were used from my GPU (95%). But since this morning it stays at above figures, even tho I didn’t change anything.

How can can I get it back to 99% usage? The more work the merrier I say

How do I fold with my graphics card when in light mode? I mostly fold in light mode and the work in the graphics card stays in idle.

I don't have a seperate graphics card in the system, but here's the same 2400G APU running in my case.  First is idle, second is graphics portion of it folding, and last is full fold with CPU too.  It gets toasty, but stock cooler and overclocked a bit.

Spoiler

mostly idle

Spoiler

Full fold, CPU and GPU portion of APU, cores OC'd to 3950 along with the gpu portion at 1300 still.  As you can see, processor gets toasty then.

image.thumb.png.44f5c38353c7a784969e3b26a02b841d.png

Stock cooler, 2 front and 1 rear 120 case fan, Thermaltake H15 mini tower.  RAM at 3200 via XMP and a Crucial P1 SSD in there as well.

In short, just use the GPU(s) you have available.  I'll be removing the CPU slot again once it finishes this WU, but wanted to get you easily comparable numbers.  The CPU doesn't really add much in the way of folding points, though for a while I ran it with a 3 thread limit on a single cpu slot and that kept the temps down to a reasonable level while I wasn't do anything else on the system, in case you still want the extra points.  You can also use Ryzen Master to slightly downclock and undervolt everything if you want to save a bit of power/heat as well, though you'll have to figure out what's stable for you in doing so.  I have my bios set to underclock both and undervolt the gpu portion and then have to apply it in ryzen master for any OC.  This lets me be safe if I crash or the like, as well as be able to run in low energy mode in linux without having to set anything special.

I also note you have a 580 in yours, and those run fairly warm.  What case and cooling do you have?  This could all be as simple as the case design not moving air through fast enough to cool both the card and cpu.  FYI, CPU only folding temps are about 78C for me when not also using the APU's GPU.

Every bit helps.  You can probably run the GPU slot of the APU and basically not notice.  It won't be huge numbers, but it should be fairly efficient numbers.
