virtualization How many processors should I give my guest os

I'm using Vmware workstation player. I have 1 guest OS that is Windows 7. I want better performance. There is little difference in my game performance when gaming on both Host and Guest at the same time vs just gaming on either one of them. I've come to the conclusion that it must be the amount of processors/cores I've assigned in Vmware workstation player. My CPU is an AMD Ryzen 5 1400 with virtualization support and I am using a Radeon Rx580 4gb. 8gb of Ram. My VM is 40GB. My processor has 8 cores. Also supports SMT/Hyperthreading. How many cores would you recommend that I assign to my VM?

 

I get the same Frame Rates on the Host with the VM running a game as I would with the VM not running.

I get the same Frame Rates on the VM while running a game on host as I do with just playing a game on the VM and not the Host.

the difference in gaming isnt from cores. its the fact the graphics card is emulated.

I am surprised you can game at all inside a virtual machine without passing through the graphics card.

You would need a GPU passthrough in order to maximize your VM gaming performance and I dont think you can do that with VMware Player

If I get a VM program that can do GPU Passthrough, Would I still be able to game inside of the Host with ONLY 1 GPU? (My motherboard can only support 1)

nope, thats the idea behind gpu passthrough, whole gpu is dedicated to VM.

Depending on how demanding the titles are you're trying to play the sweet-spot today is 4 cores. If you have AMD Simultaneous Multi-Threading then giving the VM 4C/8T would be ideal.

 

You really should pass-through a GPU though if you happen to have two. Without one the rendering load is put on the CPU and lemmie tell you it wasn't designed for it.

Understood, thanks. Ill get a new Motherboard and Gpu and go from there.
