Xeon x5675 ViAgRa Fail

X-J

I wanted to give my system a LIFT!

A new XEON x5675 CPU in exchange for the OL' Core i7 920 on a X58 System.

The Long and Short of it is that THE BLUE PILL didnt work!

At stock settings my Graphics Card started going into thermal Run-Way. After breaking 93C I hit the KILL Switch.

I put my finger on a Heat Sink on my Heat-Pipe assembly and now I have Grill Marks! Steve Raichlin (BBQ Univ) would be proud.

At the Very Lowest Settings my system is still > TOASTY!

The Graphics Card is running 20C more with the XEON x5675 than with the Core i7 920.

I did swap out my old thermal pads on the Memory Chips on my GPU with "Supposedly" High-End (1mm) FujiPoly Thermal Pads.

I also Re-Pasted the CPU and GPU with NOCTUA NT-H1 Thermal Paste (Brand New).

I also Removed the very thin Thermal Pad Under the VRM Module and used NOCTUA NT-H1 thermal paste.

The CPU at the Lowest Settings is running COOL as a CUCUMBER > 30C+. Which is unheard of on my system.

Im impressed.

Everthing else is HOT as HELL! What Gives!

---------------
Questions
---------------

Is it a BAD CPU? Is it a BAD GPU? Is it a BAD Combination? Are there some special (BIOS) settings that would offset these issues? Are the New FujiPoly Thermal Pads on the GPU Memory Chips not working or thick enough? Is the Replacement of the VRM Thermal Pad with Noctua thermal Paste an issue? Are the 1600 Mhz RAM Sticks the issue even though they are underclocked? Why are only 16GB out of 24GB RAM being recognized?

My System

- ASUS P6T Deluxe - Motherboard
- XEON x5675 - CPU
  * with NOCTUA NT-H1 thermal paste
- NOCTUA NH-U12P - CPU COOLER (Air)
- EVGA 9800 GT - Graphics Card
  * GFX CPU has NOCTUA NT-H1 thermal paste
  * Memory Chips replaced Thermal Pads with (1mm) FujiPoly Thermal Pads
    [Thermal Conductivity 17.0 W/mK]
- CRUCIAL Ballistix 1600 Mhz - RAM
  [6 x 4GB = 24 GB]
  * same make and models
- CORSAIR RM750i - Power Supply

> GPU Overheating 90C+ > Approaching Critical Temps > GPU FAN @ 100% all the time

> DRAM VOLTAGE on the HIGH END > 1.68V

My Thoughts / Info
----------------------------

- The GPU is definitely a Bottle-Neck. Is the CPU Over-Driving the GPU to the point of Over-Heating? The EVGA GPU has always run HOT, but never to this extent.

- The NVIDIA Control Panel has Performance Mode Settings. With the Core i7 920 I set the FAN SPEED to 50% on the GPU and never had a problem. With the NEW Xeon x5675 the Setting is on Automatic and going at 100%.

I fell to the allure of internet Tech Enthusiast banter about how they rejuvenated their old X58 systems with "XEONS." I dared to dream, but
came up short.

Any Ideas / Thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

The i7-920 was already overkill for a 9800GT. After 10 years, it's probably done for. Also, you can't just replace thermal pads with paste, it probably makes poor contact now.

I'd not worry too much considering the 9800 GT is worse than current CPU's integrated graphics. It's probably the thermal pads, but I'd replace the GPU with a gtx 1650 or something anyway if it's not for display output

Thanks NelizMastr!

I will use the left-over FujiPoly on the VRM Module per your advice.

I will also swap the i7 920 back in until I get a beefier GFX Card.

Im in the Market for a New GFX Card > RTX 2060 Super or RTX 2070 Super and also a new Monitor > 1440p Ultra-Wide. The CPU would probably be

the bottleneck then. Cant win them all!

I'm surprised the Noctua NT-H1 Thermal Paste didn't transfer heat on the VRM Heatsink as well as the old thermal pad. On the CPU its doing incredible.

Why is the System only Recognizing 16GB RAM out of 24GB?

I haven't quite figured that one out yet.

Granted the RAM is operating at 800 Mhz. CPUZ sees 24GB but the system doesn't.

Im going to have to go back and review the old OverClocking videos people have put on YouTube. I know just the basics. :-[

The X5675 with an overclock will handle a 2060 super just fine, especially at 1440p. No issues there. They overclock rather well ;)  just not easy peasy noobie multiplier overclocking, but proper system bus overclocking.
