I'm a male IRL. In games, I'll usually pick female. (depends on what games I'm playing)

My hunter is a female because smaller character model.

My warlock is a female to avoid cross-dressing jokes that happen with warlocks.

Both of those are in Destiny 2.

My Minecraft skin is Fluttershy, has been that way longer than my forum avatar.

I am a dude.

I am a male and I will almost always choose a female character if its an option. Quite simply and honestly because I am a pig. If I am going to play a game for hours or play a game where the character jumps around and stuff I am going to pick a pretty female with a skimpy outfit because that is what I want to look at. Not some goofy looking dude. I played as a female in Second Life for years as well. For the reason I stated above and others. For one 10 years ago if you wanted a decent looking avi you pretty much had to go for a female. The males shapes, skins and clothing was fairly limited and everyone looked the same. Also it was much easier to make money as a female starting out. Stripping, hosting, that kind of stuff. It was easeir to get a job and you made better tips as a female. Once I started building and managing a racing sim I switched to a male avi eventually. Now I don't do any of that anymore, I got burnt out puttting way too much time and effort into it for no real payback. Now when I go to second life I just hang out and I am normally not even a human avitar. Kitten, bunny, turtle, dragon and stuff like that. I switch it up a lot just to keep people on their toes lol.

Some games like the mass effect series I will play through as a female first and then play it again as a male character though to see if the story changes.

If it's an option I'll usually play through as both, I only really play single player story driven games anymore and the story and be a little different from each point of view which is interesting.

For me it depends, Im male in rl but i go with both genders in games, in my mass effect play throughs i usually perfer the female character simply because the voice acting is better, other games it depends on what role/look im going for for my character. In swtor i have male and female toons

Usually I'll pick men just I find their stereotypes less annoying than women. A female character cast in a non-sexist/objectifying manner I have zero problem with.

That's an F in the profile pic

I pick female in single player RPGs if the game has good or challenging character creator. If you touch the flower you can see one of my Skyrim characters.

In my modded Bethesda games armour and clothing choice is a big reason for going female as well.

In online games I always pick male so not to misrepresent.

I have exceptions.

In the Mass Effect games(1, 2 and 3) I used male and female because the voice acting was so good.

In Assassin's Creed Odyssey I went with the least annoying and that was Kassandra.

I almost forgot.

Bikini Armour.

Depends on the game. In Dragon Age 2 male Hawke has the worst voice possible, and I already feel like Hawke translates better as a female character.

i think the other factor in choice for gender, is in some rpgs the male characters/models just look like crap compared to the design of the female models

I'm Female and I play female characters.

I don't feel the need to change my gender.

Plus I often play on discord with my guildmates and always felt as "strange" to have a very bass or baryton voice answer to the name of "Gertrud" or "Betty the Boop" ^o^

another reason i end up as female characters a lot is that most supports are female and well, im support main always. nothing is as nice as deciding who gets to live and who gets to die lol

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

I vary, but probably choose female more often than male (being male myself), for reasons others mentioned (more fun to look at and customize to your liking, as a guy).
I usually try to play a role and I specifically do not play as myself, so 'identifying' with my character isn't really an issue. I don't need my character to be me, actually don't want that in the first place. But then it also just depends on the role, right now I'm playing Fallout VR as a male character because it just fit better with the idea I had in mind.

When playing a character online I try to go for male characters though, simply because it's annoying if people online think you're actually female...

I'm always the gender I am in real life - with the exception of RuneScape, as there is a quest that is easier if you are a female. But then you can just switch it back when you're finished ?

I was thinking about it and honestly I haven't played games where you make your own character in ages, only games with a predefined character.

With that said I originally thought it was pretty straight forwards that I prefer female characters but then I realized what really made me choose a character was rather it's unique in-games traits for the most part.

When I played The Witcher 3 the sections as Ciri were really freaking cool simply because her powers were really neat but when I played Dishonored 2 I actually done the whole deal as Corvo because his powers to me were more natural and funnier than Emily's.

It had nothing to do with appearance/aesthetic/gender at the end of the day... all games where you have this option from old school The Legend of Spyro Dawn of the Dragon to newer titles like Nier Automata and what not my preference lies really on the character's individuality from abilities/controls and so on perspective rather than anything else.

usually male characters in games are the ones who swing a giant sword around or swing a giant hammer around basically all about slow high damage attacks and that type of gameplay doesnt appeal to me so i mostly play female classes

Depends on the game really. In Destiny 2 I run all male characters because on two of those I don't want to lose all my progress. I used to run a female warlock, but male warlocks looked better for the look I was going for so I deleted mine, remade her as a dude, and reground through all the campaigns so I could look better in 3 or 4 outfits. May or may not be a bit too obsessed with looking good, but the fashion game is paramount. In other games I also tend to pick characters based on who looks the best. Like in Forza Horizon 4 (I know you don't see the actual player model much but it is there), all the guys look kinda off IMO, so I run a female character there.
