FaceApp, or how to voluntarily train russian face recognition AI

With it's increasing popularity and even seeing tweets from Linus and (Bitwit) Kyle showing the byproduct of this app, I thought I'd post this here...

Basically a couple of things are happening when you are using this app:

1) While you still get to own your face, you're giving this Russian company the exclusive right to do whatever it desires with any photo you upload to the app. You might end up on a billboard somewhere in Moscow, but your face will most likely end up training some AI facial-recognition algorithm. And the worst part is that this right is irrevocable.

2) According to former Rackspace manager Rob La Gesse, FaceApp also has acces to all of your photos, Siri and Search, and also has access to refreshing in the background.

I cant understand why people use these apps I have facebook instagram twitter discord and skype. I have never posted my face in any of them. Only a bit of video calls with VERY close friends and my grandma in skype.

It's a nothingburger. The ToS of any similar app include you gifting the pictures away, including Facebook (hence Instagram) or any web-based predecessor of this app (there used to be a number of sites that would "modify" an uploaded picture's age, race, even convert to manga, etc. - all picture collection devices). While the ToS may be overreaching (they most surely are, as those of FB, etc), the idea that we should all panic because the company happens to be Russian is laughable. Like the person saying "you're face may end up in a billboard in Moscow" -well,no: first, you are not an advertisement model, sorry; second, it would just as likely end up in a billboard in New York, and much more likely, in an online ad around the world, because there's nothing about the company being Russian limiting where and how they monetize these pictures; and third, they are probably much more interested in using the harvested pictures to develop more tools and ways to monetize their algorithms than to use the raw pictures themselves.

Which doesn't mean that if they find a way to profit from them, they will, hence the overreaching ToS (just like FB started using its users' profile pictures in ads).

Honestly Most people don't even know about a Russian company running it. I work in IT and I told my co-worker Russians made the app after he started showing me pictures of other coworkers in the office using it and he was shocked. Considering that multiple people in IT failed to check the company behind the app and the permissions it ask for you can see why so many people fell for this. They are older middle age people who love Facebook and the excuse was everyone on Facebook is doing it. Well let me tell you how terrible Facebook is.

anyone else feel this is to just stir the Russia thing again? like literally a good chunk of US server has face/video/voice as "backups" for their own use for years, now close to a decade+. why complain now specifically?

You say that like who you call on video matters on whether or not those video calls get monitored..

I think this is the part that is getting ignored the most and is arguably more scary. Access to ALL of your photos, what you search/Siri, and refreshing in the background? That's how you build a profile of someone, so you can sell them products. I don't know what else this could possibly be used for - other than putting fear into people.

It just seems like it's all - gibberish. Buzzwords are getting thrown around for no reason. Like if you wanted to see the faces of people, just get school year books and take all those photos, and you can even associate those people with what clubs they're interested in, what sports they played, get their legal names; it's all there. This is just larger scale than that, and a case where the consumer does the work for you (instead of getting yearbooks and scanning them).

Well, Amazon has access to your voice, stores it, refuses to delete recordings, and uses it to train an American voice recognition AI. I don't see how this "Russian AI" is any different from what American tech giants have been doing for a while now.

I'm not even talking about Facebook right now, because it's way worse, and keeps happening repeatedly. However, for some reason the word "Russia" just causes people to forget about everything else.

I'm sorry but this is literal non-news, but since FaceApp is a trending thing right now and it's linked to Russia, I guess it is. The exact clause both articles quote exists in the ToS of every single social media platform. It is essential for the existence of social media. No surprises here.
