Is the 650w EVGA GQ 80+ Gold any good?

ZXR

I bought the EVGA GQ 650w on prime day using the 20% off amazon warehouse for a price of £52.66, is this any good? I can return if not so please be honest. I plan on building a ryzen 5 2600 (OC) and rx 580 (OC) system for now but have plans to upgrade to a 5700xt (OC) and maybe a more powerful cpu next year.

Its a mid range PSU, which should be fine. Please use the list next time, its literally in the same forum section you just posted in ;)

Ive seen the list, but I wanted someones opinion on EVGA psus. some people have been saying they arent great and that they run loud. Also, if the corsair rm650x on evga GQ 650 were the same price, which would you buy personally and why? Ive heard good things about EVGA customer support but this is an amazon warehouse deal so idk if the warranty would apply? Thanks!

it's decent, something made by fsp, little higher ripple on the minor rails, and maybe a little noisier on the higher loads

but otherwise totally worth it

rmx personally, because it has double the warranty, has better ripple suspension and some protections on it work a little better. only downside of it comes after 750w, where it doesn't have multirail

Yeah, it's fine. 52 Pounds seems like a decent price for it. It'll be able to handle the 5700XT without any issues. I don't see any reason to return it and replace it.

I'd buy the RM650x. The EVGA GQ is a FSP design using a ACRF (Active Clamp Reset Foward) topology. The RMx uses a half bridge + LLC resonant topology which is better but more expensive to make. The RMx also has a very good quality fan, while EVGA units tend to be on the louder side - though I'm not sure how the GQ fan stacks up.

I'd be surprised if you can get an RM650x for 50 pounds though. Probably closer to the 80 pounds figure. At 80 pounds I wouldn't buy the EVGA GQ, but for the 52 pounds you paid it is a decent deal.

The PSU Tier list is not a replacement for asking questions. This is a discussion forum where people can discuss things and ask for help.

Oh, I see. The Corsair TX650M is on sale for 53 pounds (normally 75). That's actually a good deal.
I'd probably go with the TX650M instead of the EVGA GQ as well. If you've already got the EVGA GQ I probably wouldn't bother with the hassle of returning it though.

Ok, so you may not believe me here, but the unit just arrived and is not at all what I ordered. It came in the right packaging and all, but the unit iteself is a grey-box jeantech unit (405w) non-modular. Can you believe it lol. I guess Ill buy that TXM deal lol. Only problem is that it takes 1-2 months to ship :( lmao.

RIP

Amazon workers not just striking but straight up trolling customers who buy during prime day.

Some dude has probably bought the EVGA unit, taken it out of the box, put his crappy old junk PSU in the box then returned it.

Get on to Amazon customer support ASAP and get that shit sorted.

Yep so I just got got it sorted on amazon chat, the rep said I can send the psu back for a full refund, but also that I can buy a brand new unit of the same kind (EVGA GQ 650w) at full price and that I will be refunded the difference to what I originally paid. So basically Im gonna get a brand new unit this time and not a jeantech unit lmao. Your probably right though
