[Build Log][Scratch Build]Wooden Hell

peger

Hello everyone.

At the beginning I would like to apologize you all for my bad English, i'm not a native speaker.

I was planning to replace my old laptop with something new for almost a year but I always had some other expenses:(

Finally i have some spare money. For today my  planned setup looks like this:

  • CPU: Ryzen5 2600X
  • GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 G1 GAMING 8GB GDDR5 or GTX 1060
  • RAM: HyperX Predator 16GB
  • HDD: Samsung 970 Evo M.2 250GB + WD Blue 2TB
  • PSU: Corsair RMx 650W CP-9020178-EU
  • MB: to be honest idk.

At the beginning, I planned to choose Gigabyte X470 AORUS ULTRA GAMING but now i thinking about MSI X470 GAMING PRO CARBON or ASRock X470 Taichi. Or even ASUS PRIME X470-PRO. Maybe you have some advise.

Most of the cases looks mehh or is it's too expensive, so i decide to to make one from scratch. The choice was obviously simple. Wood.

Work is already in progres.

A few very raw sketches.  I decided to stick to my original idea and choose variant B. With little difference as to the location of the PSU.

j5xx8h.jpg

Dimensions about 45x45x45 cm. Two wooden side panelsfront with three holes for 140fans and  two 5,25 bays hidden behind wooden doors and sliding top  with window.

There are no other plans,  everything is in my head  and will be modified during work.

DAY 1

Some reclaimed wood. Oak beams from the old fence, old boards from the attic and scrap remaining from previous projects

IMG_20190709_115921r.jpg.fe264f4a3a6e16f9a52eb67468113ab1.jpgIMG_20190709_115908r.jpg.b0b2919d31f79a4868e1c34760acb692.jpg

Att work i ran them through jointer and finished off with planer in home.

Motherboard tray, raw fit and some old MB

And glued

DAY 2 and 3

Mostly filling nail holes with pegs.

Patching knots.

IMG_20190709_183236r.jpg.c6d4c39479885cc8f71ce2ae0e3977a1.jpg

Cuting pegs

IMG_20190709_191219r.jpg.310ec7462167a6c2cb8098e02888d21d.jpg

IMG_20190710_175638r.thumb.jpg.8476c284c584590d6dcf318deba5d765.jpg

Multitool was very helpful in cutting off all these pegs.

But in hindsight i should bother with any of this.

DAY 4

Gluing front panel.

IMG_20190710_191202r.jpg.50066598160278afc1d577ca03417680.jpg

DAY 5

Resin is here + blue dye

U use resin for the first time. Filling all the cracks and holes.IMG_20190711_190732r.jpg.89af7697d6c39820b292f7efa3d8a67f.jpg

At this point, I realized that I shouldn't pegs all this nail holes.

DAY 6

Shopping day.

IMG_20190712_145829r.thumb.jpg.af45609af2b1f955bd5f08119e662e9f.jpg

3,5mm nd 2x 3,8mm drils

M3 bolts, washers and nuts

small wheels

set of 25cm ... I have no idea what it's called in english :P ( drawers are mounted on them)

and the most important

IMG_20190712_145745r.thumb.jpg.48f06378dc0f9d449deb762f2963e92e.jpg

5mm straight cutting bit.

DAY 7

Work on the front panel .

Panel cut to the final dimensions. 43x43cm

IMG_20190712_165943r.jpg.f713594784a40691f07a85f312ed9e2e.jpg

I made it simple jig for cutting 140mm round hole.IMG_20190712_175206r.jpg.50ab5c1897dff4ead1135441d90af695.jpgIMG_20190712_175132r.jpg.e501f38f39830ba3ff569abcb3f294dd.jpg

Unfortunately, none of my bits(good one) is long enough to cut the entire thickness of the board (and thickness of jig).  I had to use multitool.IMG_20190712_184956r.jpg.9211209d83cb2db120bd515aefc92ff9.jpg

And finish with template bit.

IMG_20190712_185239r.thumb.jpg.99b46a97f2fab6bf17a95b29727728d7.jpg

IDK. it's looks not bad.

Cutting bay for 2x 5,25 and some "control panel"  reset and buttons for backlight. IMG_20190713_112950r.jpg.67d4f42283ec159d0db2bc557e6a0fd1.jpg

Quick sanding.

IMG_20190713_114708r.thumb.jpg.f01bfa87a804482063aac01d28dda647.jpg

Front panel with door.

IMG_20190713_172657r.jpg.03bf30e47407791d03bd765dfe359040.jpg

Cutting 5mm slots with router.

IMG_20190713_174002r.thumb.jpg.19218d15ea78d68e6fc83b841ea799ca.jpg

After three passes i discovered my huge mistake, 140mm holes weren't sanded.IMG_20190713_174840r.jpg.f6e01ff04909463581f332738ae48eea.jpg

Start with 40 and 80 grid and finish with 120 grid by hand.

I don't have quality roundover bit so instead of risking wood chiping i use 45 cuting bit and sandpaper

IMG_20190713_182411r.jpg.75305cff7d7da4df85368ead5c0b33b4.jpg

Cutting rest of the slots.

IMG_20190713_190348r.jpg.468154f75f5abdc52b0574021f3e0691.jpg

IMG_20190713_190832r.jpg.f8022fb59b805e0266fde93f4132e535.jpg

I made two mistakes:(.  Measure twice, cut once :).

Gluing filler strip in to the slots.IMG_20190713_202201r.jpg.b532233a928b5cbf1fdafe0f7874a5ea.jpg

IMG_20190713_203139r.jpg.ae771ec9646489d7be7a92f2fe8402b8.jpg

That's all up to now.

I still hesitate over the finish. I was thinking about burning and staining. But idk how a resin can handle treatment with a fire.

I was also thinking about controlling the fan speed and i still somewhere  have necessary electronic components.  But I don't think it necessary.

BTW, your English is very good.... I would say that it's better than a LOT of native English speakers because you took the time to spell correctly etc :)

looking very nice already! definitely excited to see the finished case.

what about cooling the hardware? since you didn;t go with standard mounting space for the intake fans i guess watercooling is not an option? ;)

No, but it's more a matter of finance;).  I'd rather spend this extra $ for better CPU or other parts. Especially that I don't plan OC so water cooling may be an overkill. I still wonder what CPU cooling choose.

Here in the SSA (Squabbling States of America), we call the things drawers are attached to "drawer glides" (btw, your English is much, much better than my Polish!).

You are doing some really great work with used wood (it would still be great with new wood)!  ?

Update

Well f**c!!! You know this feeling when you were kids and with excitement you open christmas gift just to see some "sh*t" inside the box.

In the morning I sand one of the side panels and I saw this.

IMG_20190715_121956r.jpg.b028c2f0b8e2416b72cfed5252ed197c.jpg

I'm guessing that the wood was too soft and resin not only just filled all the holes but also penetrated wood fibers. Leaving these disgusting spots . Nothing can be done, but start over again. FU*****!!

This time I used oakI took some boards from work.

IMG_20190715_122029r.thumb.jpg.a7accf2ec14c5d4eeece4a7ac03c4c42.jpg

Again, jointer and planer and i reduced their thickness from 1 inch to 1,6mm.

IMG_20190715_132942r.jpg.bf8e196f4efe91238261bcc4c6b102f3.jpg

Gluing

IMG_20190715_142227r.jpg.0981b29f3da1ec1ac17d15890594fc39.jpg

And cuting them to the final dimensions. 40x40cm, 39x39cm with 5mm tongue from every side.

IMG_20190715_183523r.jpg.71a690202550e5c03bad9e61b57c47d8.jpg

After quick sanding  they actually look amazing. But now i have another problem, should i use front panel that i already made or make a new one from the oak :/.

It's not finished yet, just after rough sanding.

IMG_20190715_194217r.jpg.02da3fe38215ff062c8669286657edd9.jpg

I think I will wait with the decision until the end of the project.

PS: i order some parts like diodes, buttons etc.

PS I also found my old 4x20 LCD display.  I don't even know if it works, he newer work. Long story short, i bought a bad display or LPT port was damaged.

Smal update.

I know that I said I will wait until the end of project, but when i I saw this board the decision was very easy.

I will make a new front panel. I think this time it will not take me this long. I learn few thing last time:).

It will look almost identical to the old one. Different type of wood and thickness, new one will be a bit thicker 2,5cm  instead of 2cm.

IMG_20190717_110510r.thumb.jpg.1d636b58ae0b30f69fe1ee9930bd547a.jpg

These cracks will look awesome filled with resin and  backlit. I thought to do something similar in the "old" panel but wood is  but a bit soft.

Poor-man jointer^^.

IMG_20190717_112413r.jpg.db7efa287c5c8d937d159648f96511ad.jpg

I also bought a motherboard, in the end i decided going with Msi x470 gaming pro carbon. And 4x 140mm fans. SilentiumPC Stella HP RGB 140 PWM.

PS I think I will have to choose a different PSU for that mobo.

Update 3 Front and shoping.

Working on front panel, there is not much to say hereWhole process is almost the same as before.

Tbh I'm more than happy that I decided to remade this. Looks awesome :) And everything didn't take as much time as before.

I bought a few resistors and a plate, also the order came. Some blue Leds, ON/OFF  switches and connectors. Plus wires and fan filters.

Unfortunately, probably the most important thing is useless.  They sent me the wrong button :/ Fu.... that's why I do not like to buy things online.

IMG_20190719_211358r.thumb.jpg.90ba36ec21154ca8e003ac23c6a35d11.jpg

I have no idea what to do next. Order new one or use one from my old PC.

IMG_20190719_211416r.thumb.jpg.598d56fabb6378fedb038f2430a92664.jpg

They really need some polishing. Or make one from wood. The whole situation complicated my progress because I planned to make the top panel tomorrow. Here is a quick sketch

IMG_20190719_220637r.jpg.abb712b1ca06a5bf669fefb50fb13f6f.jpg

A hole cut out and filled with resin with a power switch in the middle.

Also the motherboard is here.

IMG_20190719_212030r.jpg.47ecc26d76b83e86d92f1d32e6c8169a.jpg

And fan, unfortunately only one:( I pick another three on monday.

IMG_20190719_211634r.thumb.jpg.bda3b5df66064039742e37f1db1a55d8.jpg

I assume that you do not have to connect each fan separately to the M.B. But they can be connected one to another.

I also ordered the rest of the part today.

Tomorrow I will finish front and finaly start working on mobo tray.  Probably the hardest part to do so far.

EDIT idk why this last photo is pasted. I tried edit and delete them but it doesn't work.

Update 4.

I use tamplate to cut holes for the fans. They aren't too deep because I was afraid that  screws (M4) couldn't be screwed deep enough to hold everything steady. For that purpose i should use something like this

Zlaczka_wkrecana_w_drewno_ocynkowana_M3_

But when I saw price in hardware shop  i was in shock (especially m3 and m4) . One would think that someone made them by hand from gold or platinum :/. Fortunately oak is quite hard wood. So i just tap all the holes

IMG_20190720_125447r.jpg.fbd33c1b7a887ee92fe199abd2d7f170.jpg

IMG_20190720_130142r.jpg.55bc318bd24c23a0da55b7299ffcae5c.jpg

I also cut slot in the middle for a better cable management. And drill hole for one LED. Probably i will add a second one too

IMG_20190720_132126r.thumb.jpg.331c19fadb577ebbc4eedbeb3ab65537.jpg

ATX template.

Unfortunately, i have done a lousy job gluing everything together. So it wasn't quite accurate. I should just print it somewhere in the city in a printing shop.

IMG_20190720_150422r.jpg.f9b63ea26ade6b32005e995797b52169.jpg

In the end i use my old mb as a template when i drill all the holes. And it fit perfectly (sorry for bad picture)

IMG_20190720_175042r.jpg.72f295a9f83f9fd58ff73ba773e4f484.jpg

Unfortunately, it is narrower than the standard ATX so I had to drill the remaining 3 holes using the template i print.

IMG_20190720_175645r.jpg.53e1532488d760241fc4da013c4f0ae5.jpg

First try and it doesn't fit properly:(. I had to loosen the nuts and I was able to install it. But the fit isn't perfect. OK at best, a bit tight for my taste.

The tray must still be cut to the final dimension, I also want to cut holes for cables and add lighting from the bottom.

I assemble the side panels just to see how do they look like.IMG_20190720_152459r.thumb.jpg.292d24c755429b9e080f20c19bcc755a.jpgIMG_20190720_154955r.jpg.6f487af2b32dac2a4abf3c37ea78e208.jpgIMG_20190720_163215r.jpg.f17f0b9913a391b92969baa95d3a1c7b.jpg

and the whole case

IMG_20190720_164158r.thumb.jpg.ba36733c493f80c3251e6542a27fdf1f.jpg

IMG_20190720_164211r.thumb.jpg.1aaef9c3a54f3960592340166419041f.jpgIMG_20190720_165222r.thumb.jpg.af069ffec3882069e141eae71b01f5c8.jpg

I used one of the old side panels as the bottomCause you will not see him anyway and he was already done.

Current and final setup looks like that:

CPU: R5 3600

Cooling: Gelid phantom black

GPU: Msi Geforce GTX 1660 Ti gaming x

RAM: HyperX Predator 16GB

HDD: Samsung 970 Evo M.2 250GB + WD Blue 2TB

PSU: Corsair HX750 Series

There was a small problem with the power supply . My first choce have only one EPS plug so i order EVGA SuperNOVA. But they called me from the store, product is not available in stock, next delivery in september :/.

Also i took the motherboard back to the store for bios ubdate.  Strange that you can flash bios from usb in B450 pro carbon but you can't do this in X470. Like WTF? At least they'll do it for free, but it will take a few days.

Working on power switch

I spilled some resinThis wooden peg is just a filling to save some resin, cause hole for power switch will be drilled in the middle.

Update 6

Finally, I picked up orders from the store.IMG_20190727_210605r.jpg.a02369618a8f8ebf40f4511ad62ca5ac.jpg

Mind blowing such a small thing and it has several times more capacity than my first hdd.  Not even mentioning that it is much, much faster.

I am a bit skeptical about this stock cooling

Update 7

I sanded part of back panel. I think i left him how he is. And no, i don't planning mounting any fan in that hole.IMG_20190729_100455r.thumb.jpg.572c49652479978f32f9f8e0375d9f39.jpg

I spend most of time working on front panel. I added three buttons (reset and 2 for backlight), two USB 3.0 and eSata connectors. I also planned to add two USB 2.0 but the cable (from my old PC) would be too short.

Cutting slots and holesIMG_20190729_132552r.thumb.jpg.3a1c91920c58136f486344751c8ed596.jpgIMG_20190729_132558r.thumb.jpg.097c660d24608b24385296eaccc278e4.jpgIMG_20190729_150450r.thumb.jpg.015a852715a5a057986ea3c7841e6d88.jpgIMG_20190729_150434r.thumb.jpg.34e775638b76ea20b96af1c2144ce269.jpg

Buttons.

IMG_20190729_183020r.thumb.jpg.93a76b0e0e9dc2702b90b9b4a8ae0997.jpg

IMG_20190729_183114r.thumb.jpg.026af13e9be682b3f9a0c34dba6fc425.jpg

Unfortunately wood is very thin, so I had to use a M3 screws and nuts to fasten the sata and usb sockets.

Side panels were finally assembled and sanded.

IMG_20190729_175014r.thumb.jpg.e29c6eed46b5c6193e6c7ca10bb91d66.jpg

I used wood glue and 18g air nailer. And wood screws.  Later i plugged all the screw holes.

IMG_20190729_192827r.thumb.jpg.32922acbe6bbd0ed1144490d9bb6f813.jpg

Front panel has been sanded (it was real paine in the a...) and the edge from the front has been rounded.

IMG_20190729_175027r.thumb.jpg.f9f4b93e5418850c0fbc3e65781ca409.jpg

Also rabbet was cut.

IMG_20190729_174639r.thumb.jpg.8e1fb13851cd3af98c2d48ae8ab5f33f.jpg

A few pictures of the assembled  casing. The clamps hold everything together ;).

I added a part of the top panel.

IMG_20190729_185649r.thumb.jpg.dfe4015d2ebf02d4c54a148c9e18b8ed.jpgIMG_20190729_185703r.thumb.jpg.599714909b4b90df235c60d2e0c996ae.jpgIMG_20190729_190736r.thumb.jpg.ac90e22a1b80860866aae26eea7b7e2f.jpg

At the end I cut out from the inside space for two 5,25 "drives".

IMG_20190729_195211r.thumb.jpg.17b1d30441a62a8ce8f1f15c62b4e762.jpg

Finally I see some progress but there is still a lot to do. Top panel with window, mobo tray, a lot of small work, sanding, more sanding and even more sanding. And it's just the casing itself. I hope I will do quickly all the wiring and lighting.  Probably not :D, there will be a lot of soldering etc.

Surprise, surprise it not fit. FU...

Update 9

I bought new power switch. With a nice blue led.

IMG_20190731_211125r.thumb.jpg.e5881473bac27a0f8f2311feda280883.jpg

It''s a bit smaller than I expected. And the place for him is too big, so I had to look for some kind of solution.

First i drilled 20mm hole 7mm deepIMG_20190731_190322r.thumb.jpg.f8effb92d11af689df832c7fc493ef01.jpg

then a 16mm hole through the entire thickness of the board.

IMG_20190731_190359r.thumb.jpg.aff17ce603799a864f53236d0a5d465d.jpg

Then a 20mm wooden peg was glued in place, and a 12mm hole was drilled in it.

IMG_20190731_195628r.thumb.jpg.baef4e1b60d7cec98118dd88f23294f8.jpg

Hole from the inside also need to by enlarged.

IMG_20190731_195637r.thumb.jpg.ab9ff42c7bee6dd2e8919d6e5f48bb62.jpg

I am still waiting for the motherboard :/. I called the store but it wasn't there yet. :(

So what? We all have a lot to learn, everyone from beginners to experts. That doesn't change that you are doing a wonderful job due to your skills. Heck, even your English is better than you claimed.

Update 10.

I drilled holes for mounting the fans.IMG_20190801_200034r.thumb.jpg.17b06b0004d9f03ab831323c13bdf4c1.jpgIMG_20190801_195938r.thumb.jpg.a786195f20534e30808aa847770947ea.jpg

The entire case was temporarily assembled.IMG_20190802_133115r.thumb.jpg.f918d4a5c2cbc0069512b2e7f668f07c.jpgIMG_20190802_133134r.thumb.jpg.66e6cbba6b2526c1fcf5bbe03d806371.jpg

And I started working on the top panel.  Yesterday I bought a 30x30cm sheet of plexiglass.IMG_20190802_143707r.thumb.jpg.e95671d703521bfc2d91db7990450729.jpg

IMG_20190802_143716r.thumb.jpg.47f954d1c3af8da530757130de6cd978.jpgIMG_20190802_144904r.thumb.jpg.dec52e2301d197f56c4b301762d5eb74.jpgIMG_20190802_161518r.thumb.jpg.41529c9b99a386b9c23f1097ef0bab07.jpg

Unfortunately, I f***ed up cuting and the frame was a croocked :/ . Fortunately i made her bigger, so i could save her.

I really need a miter saw. Or some 45 degree angle jig for table saw.

IMG_20190802_174218r.thumb.jpg.5edbb2edecdc20d02876d48ac580d0ce.jpgIMG_20190802_174229r.thumb.jpg.3a8b88ca89777793a027264a94a1ae85.jpg

After cutting it to the final dimensions IMG_20190802_181846r.thumb.jpg.6dee530a0060f30b14faf02e5ff01ce6.jpg

I think I will add a thin strip of wood to mask the connection.

IMG_20190802_181856r.thumb.jpg.825b1b18fd2441b064f991f96f8ee999.jpgIMG_20190802_181911r.thumb.jpg.7ba05aced9d067d82b726abb0eef2662.jpg

The narrow board will also be attached from the bottom to the corner to make place for the lock.

I think I will put a few LEDs on the bottom of the frame.

The last thing to do is finish MoBo tray. But I can't do this without board.

I need to check if the mounting holes are well spaced and make holes for all cables.

And now less optimistic news. I called the store, again  and I found that my motherboard was sent back to MSI to update the bios. WHAT? Like WTF even dude in shop don't know why. I just should take 2600x like i was planning from the beginning. And now I wouldn't have problems.

Update 11

On saturday I cut holes in the mobo tray for backlight. Top

IMG_20190803_173834r.thumb.jpg.67cbb33f024109a1c2ceafdb5ddb9545.jpg

and bottom

IMG_20190803_173845r.thumb.jpg.6d206203e40d66750acec11dd4356e1a.jpg

I made a lazy job  sealing all the holes and some of the resin split on the bottom so I had to add some more on sunday.

Unfortunately, in one of the holes, the resin didn't cure and when I removed the tape from the bottom still had the gel consistency.  We'll see tomorrow .

Cuting some filler stripe.

It's not an oak and it don't look fancy but noone will see it :P.

PS: Looking at the last photo I just realized that I would have to cut the corner of this plate, to make room for wheels.
