[Help/Upgrade] 1x1 vs 2x2 wifi in laptops

Hello!

Can someone explain what this 1x1 and 2x2 exactly mean? Is this the number of "antennas", "data streams" or bands(2.4/5ghz etc.)?

Also, can a cheap 1x1 equipped laptop (intel 9462) be upgraded to 2x2 (intel 9560) by replacing wifi module?
