AMD is offering their "boot kit" again this generation. It comes with an entry level processor as a loaner to update your bios, with free return shipping so you send it back when you're done.

I was looking for a way to update the BIOS on a 2nd gen. Ryzen motherboard to allow it to work on the newest processors in case a friend wants to go Ryzen w/his gaming computer in October.  I'm looking to find out if it's possible w/out a USB Flashback BIOS Update at all, since he obviously wouldn't purchase a 1st/2nd gen. processor just to update the BIOS; if anyone has a workaround or suggestions, please let me know.

Some mobos do allow you to flash the BIOS from a USB-stick with no CPU installed, but most mobos don't and on those mobos there is no magic workaround.

There is only 1 other way i can think off.

 

Contact the manufacturer to see if they will supply a new bios chip with latest on or search ebay ive seen people selling bios chips there

Since AMD offers their bootkit, i wouldn't recommend using the following option.

But most webshops (here anyway) offer to check / upgrade the bios of the mainboard before sending it out.

This generally cost about 10 bucks. Regardless of the mainboard actually needing it.
